prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Shabbos 80

1)

(a) Does it make any difference whether one carries out ink which is dry, which is already on the tip of the pen or which still in the ink-well?

(b) How much ink must one carry out in order to be Chayav?

(c) Will he be Chayav for carrying one letter-volume of the one, and one, of the other?

2)
(a) Is one Chayav - for carrying - if he writes the two letters whilst he is walking?
Is this called a Hanachah, even though he did not stop?

(b) If he carries out sufficient ink to write one letter, and then, before going to fetch the second one, he writes the first one on paper, will he be Chayav - for carrying - when he fetches the second letter, and writes it beside the first one?

(c) Will someone be Chayav if he carries out a half-Kigerogeres of food, puts it down, and then goes and carries another half-Kigerogeres and places it beside the first?

(d) Then why did Rava say 'Patur? What case was he referring to?

3)
(a) Rava, the author of all the current statements, says with regard to the previous case, that if, instead of placing the second half-Kigerogeres beside the first, he passes it over it, he is Chayav.
What will Rava do with the fact that he did not make a Hanachah with the second half-Kigerogeres?

(b) But Rava himself has said that, according to the Rabbanan, even an article which passes within three Tefachim of the ground, requires a Hanachah on something (even if is not an area that is three by three Tefachim).
How do we reconcile the two statements of Rava?

(c) 'Hotzi Chatzi Gerogeres, ve'Chazar ve'Hotzi Chatzi Gerogeres, be'He'elam Achad, Chayav ... Rebbi Yossi Omer, be'He'elam Echad li'Reshus Echad, Chayav, li'Sh'tei Reshuyos, Patur'.
In which does Rebbi Yossi hold that he is Patur - according to Rabah?

(d) According to Abaye, even if a Karmelis divides the Reshus ha'Rabim, he is also Patur.
What does Rava hold?

(e) What does Rava mean when he says 'Reshus Shabbos ki'Reshus Gitin Damya'? What is the case by Gitin?

4)
(a) Why is one Chayav for carrying out enough eye-paint to paint *one* eye, considering that most women paint *two* eyes, not just *one*?

(b) How do we then account for the statement of Rebbi Shimon ben Elazar, that it is only if one carries out eye-paint to be used as a cure, that one is Chayav for carrying enough for *one* eye, but as a cosmetic, one is Chayav only for carrying out enough to paint *two* eyes?

5)
(a) What is the Shiur for carrying out glue? What purpose did the glue serve?

(b) According to the text in our Mishnah, the Shiur for broken pieces of earthenware - is enough to make a hole in, to cover the opening of a goldsmith's furnace, according to the Tana Kama; according to Rebbi Yehudah, to make the leg of the tripod of a furnace (which is a larger Shiur).
Why is this inconsistent with their previous Machlokes regarding a reed?

(c) How does the Gemara amend the opinion of Rebbi Yehudah, to conform with the first Machlokes?

Answers to questions

80b---------------------------------------80b

6) What is the Shiur for carrying out ...

  1. ... hair?
  2. ... cement?
7)
(a) What is the minimum Shiur for carrying out lime on Shabbos?

(b) What would wealthy people use to remove premature hair from their little daughters' bodies?

(c) Kings tended to use Sateches.
What is 'Sateches', and what else might they use?

(d) Why did that gentile accuse Rav Bibi of killing his daughter? What was his mistake?

8)
(a) According to Rebbi Yehudah, the Shiur for carrying out lime is 'Kilkel', and according to Rebbi Nechemyah it is 'Undifi'.
What is ...
  1. ... 'Kilkel'?
  2. ... 'Undifi'? (according to the Gemara's initial understanding).
(b) According to this, Rebbi Yehudah's Shiur is both larger and smaller.
What does this mean?

(c) Why does the Gemara retract from this explanation?

(d) The Gemara then interprets Undifi as 'Andifa'.
What is 'Andifa' (according to Rashi's first explanation), and on what grounds does the Gemara reject this explanation, too?

9)
(a) The Gemara finally gives two interpretations of Undifi: 1. Shenasos; 2. Andifa Apusa.
What do these mean?

(b) Why did they say with regard to that Galilean who died from a hornet sting - that it served him right?

10)
(a) According to Rebbi Akiva, the Shiur for carrying out red clay on Shabbos, is enough to seal a large commercial sack, and for manure and fine sand, enough to fertilize one cabbage-stalk.
What Shiur do the Rabbanan give ...
1. ... for red clay?
2. ... for manure and fine sand?
(b) What is the Shiur for ...
1. ... thick sand?
2. ... a thin cane?
3. ... a thick or split cane?
(c) What makes the Gemara initially think that the author of our Mishnah, which gives the Shiur for thick sand as 'Al Melo Kaf Sid', must be Rebbi Yehudah?

(d) The Gemara concludes that the author could really be the Chachamim, because 'Kilkulo Zehu Tikuno'.
What does this mean?

11) The Beraisa gives the Shiur for a fine cane as to be able to make with it a quill that will reach the joints of his fingers.
What are the two possible ways of understanding this?

12)

(a) The Shiur for thick sand is sufficient to cook a Beitzah Kalah ... Terufah u'Nesunah be'Ilfas'.
With what was the egg mixed?

(b) Why did Mar Brei de'Ravina's son think that the 'Beitzah Kalah' must be referring to the egg of a bird called Tziltzela?

(c) Mar Brei de'Revina disagrees with his son on this point. It appears that there *is* a bird that is smaller than a Tziltzela (though that is not the reason that he disagrees with him).
How then, does *he* explain 'Beitzah Kalah'?

(d) Why does the Tana give the Shiur of an egg, when the Shiur of food is always that of a Kigerogeres?
