REVIEW QUESTIONS ON GEMARA AND RASHI

prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Shabbos 81

1)

(a) What is the Shiur of ...
  1. ...a bone (according to the Tana Kama)?
  2. ...a piece of glass?
  3. ... a rock or a stone?
(b) The Gemara initially thinks that, according to Rebbi Yehudah, the Shiur for a bone is enough to manufacture a lock.
What problem does the Gemara have with this?

(c) How does the Gemara solve the problem?

2)
(a) When do the teeth of a lock become subject to Tum'ah, and of which type of lock are we speaking?

(b) If the lock was not subject to Tum'ah, the teeth would not be subject to Tum'ah, either.
What makes the lock, which is made of wood, subject to Tum'ah?

(c) The Beraisa gives a different Shiur for glass than our Mishnah.
What is it?

(d) Why does glass have two names: Sechuchis and Zechuchis?

3)
(a) According to Rebbi Eliezer ben Ya'akov, the Shiur for a rock or a stone is that it should be large enough to throw at an animal. Chazal assessed its weight. What was it?

(b) Zonin asked in the Beis ha'Medrash what the Shiur of stones for the bathroom was.
What are the dual ramifications of Zonin's Sha'aleh?

(c) They answered him that three stones are involved here: one the size of a Kezayis, one, of a nut, and one, of a Kebeitzah (to be used progressively, for practical reasons).
Although there are Tana'im who hold like that, the Gemara here rejects it.
On what grounds?

(d) What is the Gemara's solution to Zonin's Sha'aleh?

4)
(a) Rebbi Meir gives the Shiur of all three stones as a nut, Rebbi Yehudah as a Kebietzah.
In which other area of Halachah do they argue over the same point?

(b) It is forbidden to take a 'Payas' into the bathroom.
What is a Payas, what is the Isur, and why is it Asur?

(c) Rava says 'Asur Lemashmesh bi'Tz'ror be'Shabbos, ke'Derech she'Memashmesh be'Chol'. The Gemara asks on this: 'Listachen'?
What is the Kashya, and what is the Gemara's reply?

(d) What is the Shiur of stones that one is permitted to take to a bathroom that is not fixed, and why the difference?

5)
(a) Under what circumstances may one take a small mortar into the bathroom to use instead of the stones (according to Rashi - see Tosfos DH 've'Im La'av')?

(b) Ten things cause piles: eating bamboo-leaves, vine-leaves or branches, rough meat without salt, the spinal cord of a fish or salted fish that has not been fully cooked, and drinking the dregs of wine.
What are the remaining three?

(c) Some add 'Af ha'Toleh Atzmo be'Veis ha'Kisei'.
What does this mean?

(d) The last item on the original list clashes with what we learnt above in a.
How does the Gemara resolve this discrepancy - in three different ways?

6) Will the mortar lose its new function if the rain washes off its classification mark?

Answers to questions

81b---------------------------------------81b

7)

(a) Which Sha'aleh do we resolve with the saying 'Gadol Kavod ha'Beriyos, she'Docheh es Lo Sa'aseh she'ba'Torah'?

(b) From which Pasuk do we learn this?

(c) Why then, according to the Chachamim of Rebbi Eliezer, is it forbidden to pick up splinters of wood - to pick one's teeth - other than from a stable, where they are Muchan (and therefore not Muktzah)?

8)
(a) Rav Huna says that it is forbidden to relieve oneself in a plowed field on Shabbos.
Why can the reason for this not be ...
  1. ... because of treading in someone else's plowed field (and spoiling the furrow)?
  2. ... because, in the process of cleaning oneself, he may come to pull out some of the grass that is growing there - and be Chayav because of Tolesh?
(b) What then, *is* the reason for this prohibition?

(c) Why can we not infer from Resh Lakish's Din (that one may use a rock with grass growing from it to clean oneself), that it is permitted to move a Parfisa - a plant-pot - on Shabbos (as long as one take's care not to detach the plant, or to enhance its growth, in any way)?

(d) How does Rashi describe a Parfisa?

9)
(a) Is someone who moves a plant-pot (with a hole in it) from the ground, and place it on pegs (or vice-versa), Chayav on Shabbos?

(b) Which Melachos does this resemble?

(c) What are the two reasons for the prohibition of using a piece of clay to clean oneself - even during the week?

(d) Then why did Rebbi Yochanan need to forbid it on Shabbos?

10)
(a) How do we know that Rebbi Yochanan holds 'Davar she'Ein Miskaven, Mutar'?

(b) What happened to Rav Chisda and Rabah bar Rav Huna when they refused to take that Roman matron with them?

(c) To which three things did she ascribe her inability to harm them with her witchcraft?
