Shabbos 153
1) [line 5] ACHEIM B'HESPEDA - warm up and arouse the feelings of the
people when saying my eulogy
b) [line 5] D'HASAM KA'IMNA - because I (my soul) will be standing there
2) [line 6] HA D'MECHAMU LEI V'ACHIM - in this case (of the righteous man),
when the eulogizers try to warm the feelings of the people, their
sentiments are aroused
3) [line 7] D'SANU LEI KULHU PUMBEDISA'EI - who is hated by all of the
residents of Pumbedisa (who hated Rabah because of his words of reproof)
4) [line 9] MISTAYA - it is enough
5) [line 12] KI SA'AMINU V'CHI SASME'ILU - whether you be told to go to the
right or to the left. The prophet warns all of those people who do not heed
the word of HaSh-m as delivered through the mouths of His prophets, that
when He will reveal Himself, they will long to be able to do whatever He
will command. But it will be too late.
6) [line 14] ASEH DEVARIM LIFNEI MITASCHA - do good deeds that will be
related in your eulogy
7) [line 27] K'MESHAMSHIN - like waiters
*****PEREK #24 MI SHE'HECHSHICH*****
8) [line 33] KISO - his purse
9) [line 43] METZUVEH AL SHEVISASO
It is forbidden for a Jew to allow his animal to work on Shabbos, as it
states (Shemos 23:12) "Lima'an Yanu'ach Shorcha va'Chamorecha" - "so that
your ox and your donkey may rest." (See Background to Daf 153:15)
10) [line 44] CHERESH - a deaf person
153b---------------------------------------153b
11) [line 15] "KEVOD ELOKIM HASTER DAVAR ..." - "It is the glory of HaSh-m
to conceal a thing; but the honor of kings is to search out a matter."
(Mishlei 25:2)
12) [line 18] BO BA'YOM - on the day that the Chachamim went to visit
Chananyah ben Chizkiyah ben Garon in the second story of his house, when
they made 18 decrees, as explained above on Daf 13b
13) [line 18] GADSHU SE'AH - they made a heaping (advantageous) measure of
decrees
14) [line 19] MACHAKU SE'AH - they made a leveled (disadvantageous) measure
of decrees; i.e. their overabundance of decrees could cause people to
transgress Torah Law
15) [line 25] MECHAMER
(a) It is forbidden to lead a donkey (Chamor) or other animal on Shabbos
while it is laden, even by calling to it. One who does so transgresses a
negative prohibition. (RAMBAM Hilchos Shabbos 20:6)
(b) "Shevisas Behemah" is a closely related positive commandment. One is
required to allow his animals to rest on Shabbos as it states (Shemos
23:12) "Lima'an Yanu'ach Shorcha va'Chamorecha" - "so that your ox and your
donkey may rest." If one causes his animal to do work (i.e., one of the 39
categories of Melachah) on Shabbos, whether or not he is present at the
time he transgresses a positive commandment. (This is not the same as
Mechamer, which only applies when one *leads* his animal and the animal is
laden).
16) [line 35] KALI KALI LO - but not a little at a time, i.e. it is
forbidden to walk casually
