Pesachim 105
1) R. Hamnuna told the students of Rav upon whom he was waiting, that
they need not remove the tables to mark the end of their meal with the
entry of Shabbos
(a) Shabbos appoints the meal automatically for Kidush as it does for
Ma'aser.
(b) The students thought to extend this law to Havdalah (and thus
stopped their meal with the end of the day).
(c) R. Amram taught them that the law applies only to the arrival of
Shabbos (Kidush) not to its departure.
1. This qualification is true only regarding stopping a meal.
2. However, it is not permitted to begin the meal after dark.
3. This qualification only applies to eating, however drinking
must stop.
4. Only intoxicating beverages must be stopped, but water may
be drunk even after dark, before Havdalah.
5. This point differs with R. Huna, who rebuked a person who
drank water before Havdalah, based on a teaching from R.
Akiva.
6. The Rabbis of R. Ashi's yeshiva were not particular about
water.
2) RECITING KIDUSH LATER IF MISSED
(a) Question [Ravina to R. Nachman b. Yitzhok]: May a person who did
not recite Kidush do so even during the day?
(b) Answer: He may recite it during the day, just as one who did not
recite Havdalah may recite it all week.
(c) Question: From the Bereisa we see that we cannot make Kidush on a
cup during the day!?
1. The Bereisa says that there is only Kidush on a cup on the
*nights* of Shabbos and YomTov.
2. According to the above, there could be a Kidush over a cup
even by day?!
(d) Answer: That Tana was not teaching a case of "what if."
(e) Question: The Bereisa implies that there is no option of reciting
Kidush by day!?
1. The Bereisa give Kavod priority to the day over the night.
2. If one only had one cup of wine, he would recite the Kidush
at night.
3. If it were acceptable to recite the Kidush even by day, then
he could do so and fulfil both!?
105b---------------------------------------105b
(f) Answer: A Mitzvah is more precious at its proper time.
(g) Question: The Bereisa shows that we do not apply this principle?
1. According to this Bereisa the order is wine [Birkas
HaMazon], light, Besamim and then Havdalah [over a cup].
2. One who has only one cup uses it to combine Havdalah and
Birkas HaMazon.
3. This implies that he does *not* say Havdalah at its proper
time!?
(h) Answer: That is the law, nevertheless, and I did not make it up
nor discover it.
1. When welcoming the Shabbos we do so at the first possible
time (to show our love for it).
2. When the day is leaving we delay it (so it should not appear
as a burden to us).
