Pesachim 104
1) THE NUSACH OF HAVDALAH - MEI'EIN HACHASIMAH
(a) Question: But you said four divisions, not three nor seven?
(b) Answer: The last was to connect to the closure of the Berachah.
1. [R. Yehudah citing Shmuel] One who recites Havdalah must
include something akin to the conclusion near the closing.
2. [Those from Pumpedisa] Something akin to the opening near
the closing.
3. They would differ regarding the Havdalah of YomTov following
Shabbos which concludes "Hamavdil Bein Kodesh l'Kodesh" as
to whether we would need to say "Bein Kedushas Shabbos
l'Kedushas YomTov Hivdalta."
(c) Question: How can you require not less than three and not more
than seven when the Bereisa says "many" or as few as "one?"
(d) Answer [R. Yochanan]: It is a Machlokes Tanayim as we learned
that the son of holy men recited one.
(e) Question: Who is this son?
(f) Answer: R. Menachem b. Simai
(g) Question: Why was he called such?
(h) Answer: Because he never looked at the form (face) on a coin.
(i) [R. Shmuel b. Idi] My brother, Chananya, recites one, and the
Halachah does not follow him.
2) FORMULAE MENTIONED IN THE TORAH
(a) [R. Yehoshua b. Levi] The formulae used in Havdalah must come
from the Torah.
(b) Question: But the Bereisa lists the division of "between the sea
and the land," a division which does not appear in the Torah?!
(c) Answer: Indeed, erase this division from the listing.
(d) Question: There is similarly no mention of Havdalah between
Shabbos and the six workdays?!
(e) Answer: This is only mentioned as akin to the closure.
(f) Question: Then you don't have seven in the listing?
(g) Answer: The division between Kohanim, Levi'im and Yisraelim is
two divisions, each representing a different Pasuk.
3) THE CLOSURE OF HAVDALAH
(a) [Rav] The closure is Mekadesh Yisrael.
(b) [Shmuel] HaMavdil Bein Kodesh l'Chol.
(c) One who followed Rav was accursed.
(d) [R. Yehoshua b. Chananya] One who combines them has his days and
years prolonged [but the Halachah does not follow this view].
104b---------------------------------------104b
(e) When Ula came to Pumpedisa, R. Yehudah sent his son, R. Yitzhok,
with gift-fruits, thus to observe Ula's Havdalah practices.
(f) Instead, R. Yitzhok sent Abaye to Ula.
(g) Abaye reported that Ula said only HaMavdil Bein Kodesh l'Chol.
(h) R. Yehudah questioned R. Yitzhok, who could only report what he
heard from Abaye and admitted that he had not seen him himself.
(i) R. Yehudah chastised his son for not going himself.
(j) Question: The Berachah [Havdalah] as Ula said it does not fit the
required formula of both opening and closing with Baruch.
(k) Answer: Havdalah is considered like blessings over Mitzvos (and,
as praise, can be "short").
