Kesuvos 66
1) PRIVELEGES A HUSBAND HAS IN HIS WIFE
(a) Question (Rava): R. Akiva says, a wife keeps her extra
earnings - all the more so, an object she finds!
1. (Mishnah): (A woman says to her husband) 'What I
produce is Konam (forbidden as a sacrifice) to your
mouth' - this vow need not be annulled; R. Akiva
says it should be annulled, perhaps she will produce
extra.
(b) Answer: The correct text of the Beraisa switches the
opinions of R. Akiva and Chachamim - a husband receives
an object his wife finds; R. Akiva says, she keeps it.
(c) Question: But Ravin taught, R. Akiva admits that extra
earnings (for which she did not strain herself) belong to
the husband (and presumably, found objects as well) - he
only argues by extra earnings which come through pushing
herself!
1. By such earnings, Chachamim say they belong to the
husband; R. Akiva says, she keeps them.
(d) Answer (Rav Papa): A found object is comparable to extra
earnings acquired through strain - on this, Chachamim and
R. Akiva argue.
(e) Question (Rav Papa): If she does 2 jobs simultaneously -
is this considered extra earnings through pushing
herself?
(f) Question (Ravina): If she does 3 or 4 jobs simultaneously
- is this considered extra earnings through pushing
herself?
1. These questions are unresolved.
(g) (Mishnah): Payments for injury or embarrassment sustained
(R. Yehudah Ben Beseira says, the husband receives ...)
(h) Question (Rava Bar Rav Chanan): Will he also say, a man
receives payments if someone embarrasses his horse?!
(i) Answer: No - a horse does not suffer embarrassment.
(j) Question: If a man spat on someone's garment, will he
have to pay?
1. Suggestion: If you will say yes - but a Mishnah
teaches, 'If he spit and the spit reached the
person, or he uncovered a woman's hair, or took off
a man's cloak - he must pay 400 Zuz'.
i. (Rav Papa): He must only pay for spitting if
the spit touched him, not if it landed on his
garment.
(k) Answer: A man suffers no disgrace if his garment is spit
on - he is disgraced when his wife is disgraced.
(l) Question (Ravina): According to this - if a poor man from
a rich family is disgraced - the whole family is
disgraced, do they also receive payments?!
(m) Answer (Rav Ashi): They are not the body that was
disgraced; but a man's wife is as his very self.
2) APPRAISING THE DOWRY
(a) (Mishnah): A father who commits himself to give a dowry,
and the Chasan died before Nisu'in - the father can tell
the Yavam, I was willing to give to your brother, but I
do not want to give to you;
(b) If she committed to bring 1000 Dinarim into the marriage,
the Chasan writes in the Kesuvah that he received 1500;
(c) Corresponding to an evaluation of property brought into
the marriage, the Chasan writes that he received 1/5 less
than the appraised value;
(d) If he writes that he received 100 and the goods are truly
worth 100, he cannot demand that she bring in more
property;
(e) If he writes that he received 100, she must bring in
property appraised as 125;
(f) If he writes that he received 400, she must bring in
property appraised as 500;

(g) What the Chasan appraises, he writes 1/5 less than the
appraised value.
(h) (Gemara - Beraisa): We need not teach, if the father
promised a dowry to a Chacham, and the Yavam is an
ignoramus (he may say, I wanted to give to your brother,
but not to you);
(i) Even if the dowry was promised to an ignoramus, and the
Yavam is a Chacham, he may say, I wanted to give to your
brother, but not to you.
(j) (Mishnah): If she committed to bring in 1000 Zuz ...
(k) Question: The Mishnah repeats the same case needlessly!
(l) Answer: The Tana teaches that we deduct from a small
appraisal, and from a large one; he teaches that we
deduct from an appraisal made by her relatives, and by
the Chasan himself.
3) A WIFE THAT BRONGS MONEY INTO THE MARRAIGE
(a) (Mishnah): If she committed to bring money into the
marriage, for each Sela, he writes 6 Dinarim;
(b) The Chasan must give 10 Dinars for the box for every
Maneh she brings in;
(c) R. Shimon Ben Gamliel says, everything goes according to
the local custom.
(d) (Gemara) Question: The previous Mishnah says, if she
enters 1000, he writes 1500 - why must our Mishnah also
teach that he adds a third?
(e) Answer: We need to hear that this applies to a small sum
and to a large sum.
1. If we would only teach a large sum - one might
think, this is because the profit is great, but for
a small sum, he does not add a third!
2. If we would only teach a small sum - one might
think, this is because the expenses and
responsibility are small, but for a large sum, he
does not add a third!
(f) (Mishnah): The Chasan must give 10 Dinars for the box ...
(g) Question: What is this box?
(h) Answer: A box of perfumes.
(i) (Rav Ashi): This only applies in Yerushalayim.
(j) Question (Rav Ashi): Does he contribute 10 Dinars for
every Maneh appraised, or for every Maneh he writes in
the Kesuvah?
1. Question: If you will say, for each Maneh he writes
- is this amount given the 1st day, or every day?
2. Question: If you will say, for each day - is this
for the 1st week, or every week?
3. Question: If you will say, for each week - is this
for the 1st month, or every month?
4. Question: If you will say, for each month - is this
for the 1st year, or every year?
i. This is not resolved.
(k) (Rav Yehudah): Chachamim apportioned 400 gold coins for
Nakdimon Ben Guryon's daughter for perfumes.
1. The daughter: So you should apportion for your
daughters!
2. Chachamim: Amen!
4) ONE THAT DOES NOT GIVE ENOUGH TZEDAKAH
(a) R. Yochanan Ben Zakai saw a girl gathering barley amidst
the dung of the animals of Arabs. When she saw him, she
cloaked herself with her hair, and asked, 'Feed me'!
1. R. Yochanan Ben Zakai: Who are you?
2. The girl: The daughter of Nakdimon Ben Guryon.
3. R. Yochanan Ben Zakai: What happened to the money of
your father's house?
4. The girl: As people say in Yerushalayim - salt (the
way to preserve) money is to deduct (to give to
Tzedakah); others say, to do Chesed with it.
5. R. Yochanan Ben Zakai: What happened to the money of
your father-in-law's house?
6. The girl: Since it was mixed with money of my
father's house, it was also lost. Do you remember
when you signed on my Kesuvah?
7. R. Yochanan Ben Zakai: Yes! Your father gave 1
million gold dinars, and your father-in-law also
contributed.
i. R. Yochanan Ben Zakai wept. 'Happy are you,
Yisrael - when you do Hash-m's will, no nation
can rule over you; when you do not do his will,
he puts you in the hands of a lowly nation -
worse than this, in the hands of the animals of
a lowly nation.
(b) Question: Did Nakdimon Ben Guryon really not give
Tzedakah?
1. (Beraisa): When Nakdimon Ben Guryon walked to the
Beis Medrash, they would spread silk garments before
him, and the poor would take them!
