1) [line 1] SHNEI PASIN - two remaining segments of the wall of the Chatzer,
on either end of the breach
2) [line 25] PASEI BIRA'OS
(a) Chazal instituted various lenient rulings in order to help Jews keep the
Mitzvah of Aliyah l'Regel (traveling to the Beis ha'Mikdash for the holidays
of Pesach, Shavu'os and Sukos). One of these is called Pasei Bira'os (planks
for the springs).
(b) If a well is four by four Tefachim wide and ten Tefachim deep, it is
considered to be a Reshus ha'Yachid. If it is located in middle of Reshus
ha'Rabim, one may not draw water from the well (= Reshus ha'Yachid) and set
the bucket down at the edge of the pit (= Reshus ha'Rabim) for an animal to
drink. One may only drink from the well by climbing *into* the well, and
drinking its water while in the well.
(b) By placing four corner pieces around the well (each made of two planks
one Amah wide and ten Tefachim tall, set perpendicular to each other), the
area enclosed by the planks is considered to be a 4-walled Reshus ha'Yachid
and the open space between them is considered a "doorway" in a full wall. It
is therefore permitted for a person to set a bucket of water drawn from the
well at a point enclosed by the planks, and bring his animal (or most of it)
within that area to drink from the water.
(c) The corner pieces were placed 10 Amos apart according to Rebbi Meir and
13 1/3 Amos apart according to Rebbi Yehudah. To enclose an area larger than
10 or 13 1/3 Amos, extra planks must be added beween the corner pieces to
shorten the gaps between them.
3) [line 25] PARUTZ MERUBAH AL HA'OMED - the space between the boards is
greater than the width of the boards themselves
4) [line 28] V'HI HA'NOSENES - for that very reason it should be permitted
for a Mavoy to be wider than 13 1/3 Amos
5) [line 31] D'AKILAS BEHU CHAD KULA - that the Chachamim have already
conferred one leniency upon it
6) [line 31] KELAL KELAL LO - with regard to a Mavoy, the Chachamim should
not be lenient at all, and there is no proof that the entrance should be
allowed to be wider than ten Amos
10b---------------------------------------10b
7) [line 9] ASI AVIRA D'HAI GISA V'AVIRA D'HAI GISA, U'MEVATEL LEI
(a) Certain gaps in a Mechitzah (enclosing wall) can render a Mechitzah
invalid for creating a Reshus ha'Yachid or for acting as the Mechitzah of a
Mavoy (for instance, if there are more 3-Tefach-plus gaps than solid
Mechitzah, or if there are gaps in the Mechitzah which are larger than 10
Amos). Planks or other solid objects must be used to fill in the gaps (in
the above examples, until the gaps comprise less than half of the stretch of
the Mechitzah, or until the 10+ Amah gap is shortened to 10 or less Amos).
However, these "filler" objects are valid only if the gap to either side of
the filler object (if there is one) is narrower than the object itself. If
the gaps on either side of the filler are equal to or larger than the
filler, the filler is ignored because of "Asi Avira D'hai Gisa V'avira D'hai
Gisa, U'mevatel Lei" ("the empty space on either side of the filler negates
the filled space in between them").
(b) If the space on either side of the filler is less than three Tefachim,
it is viewed as solid due to the rule of Lavud (see above, Background to
Eruvin 9:1), and it cannot negate the filler object.
8) [line 20] KA MEMA'ET B'HILUCHA - they shorten the distance that they have
to walk by going through the small opening
9) [line 22] ASLA - a portable toilet seat
10) [line 29] MI PALGISU - do you argue with Ravin?
11a) [line 29] RAVREVASA - large ones
b) [line 30] ZUTARTA - small ones
12) [line 30] LAI, PELIGISU - indeed, you argue
13) [line 37] V'ELA MAI, PELIGINAN? - If it is as you say, that we do argue
with regard to Omed Meubah Al ha'Parutz mi'Shtei Ruchos, [then the following
is difficult]
14) [line 40] IY IKA L'MEIMAR D'PALGINAN - if it is possible to say that we
argue, [then we argue with regard to Parutz k'Omed. (Both Rav Dimi and Ravin
were quoting what they heard from Rebbi Yochanan. Ravin was of the opinion
that Rebbi Yochanan simply wasn't careful with his wording, and both
statements are in agreement. However, he tells Abaye that *if* you want to
suggest that the statement are indeed contradictory, and either I or Rav
Dimi made a mistake, then the reasoning behind the two approaches is as
follows.... RITVA)
15) [last line] AMALTERA - cornice, a horizontal strip of stone, wood or
plaster crowning a building or entrance, usually molded and projecting
