Sukah 41
SUKA 36-56 (End of Maseches) have been dedicated by the wife and daughters
of the late Dr. Simcha Bekelnitzky (Simcha Gedalya ben Shraga Feibush) of
Queens N.Y. Well known in the community for his Chesed and Tzedakah, he will
long be remembered.

1)
(a) According to Rav Ashi's initial statement, it is only by the *original*
fruit that Rebbi Elazar argues with Rebbi Yochanan, but as far as the
*second* fruit is concerned, even *he* concedes that it may even be redeemed
by way of Chilul. If that is so, then why, in the Beraisa that supports him,
does the Tana speak about 'Lakach' even by the *second* and by the *third*
fruit (rather than 'Chilel')?
(b) If someone wishes to purchase a shirt with a Sela of Shevi'is, what
problem will he encounter?
(c) So what does the Tana of another Beraisa suggest that he does?
(d) How does this Beraisa disprove Rav Ashi's previous statement? Why is it
obvious that the Sela is a *second* fruit and not an *original* one?
2)
(a) How do now re-word Rav Ashi's statement? Who concedes what to whom?
(b) Then why, in the Beraisa that supports Rebbi Yochanan, does the Tana
speak about transferring *Shevi'is* (implying the *original* Kedushah) on to
an animal?
(c) How do we prove this from 'Ma'ser Sheini' (which the Tana deals with in
the same breath)?
3)
(a) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Emor "u'Semachtem *Lifnei Hashem
Elokeichem Shiv'as Yamim*"?
(b) What Takanah did Raban Yochanan ben Zakai institute?
(c) He also instituted that 'Yom Henef' should be completely forbidden.
What does this mean?
(d) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Yirmiyah that ends "Tzi'on Hi, Doresh
Ein Lah"?
4)
(a) What is 'Chadash'?
(b) By Torah law, from when on should Chadash be permitted when there is no
Beis Hamikdash?
(c) So why did Raban Yochanan ben Zakai forbid it until the *seventeenth*?
(d) What is the problem with this, assuming the Beis Hamikdash will be built
any time up to the fifteenth of Nisan?
5)
(a) So the Takanah is concerned that the Beis Hamikdash may be built on the
night of the sixteenth of Nisan. Is it permitted to build the Beis
Hamikdash at night-time?
(b) How does this concern spark off Raban Yochanan ben Zakai's Takanah?
Answers to questions
41b---------------------------------------41b
6)
(a) Alternatively, Rebbi Yochanan ben Zakai holds like his grand-Talmid
Rebbi Yehudah. What did Rebbi Yehudah Darshen from the Pasuk in Emor "Ad
Etzem ha'Yom ha'Zeh"?
(b) If Raban Yochanan ben Zakai himself holds like Rebbi Yehudah, then why
did Rebbi Yehudah (in the Mishnah in Menachos) argue with him (though not
directly, since he lived many years after him) in making his point?
(c) Seeing as Raban Yochanan now holds that Chadash is actually Asur the
entire sixteenth day *mi'd'Oraysa*, why *does* the Mishnah in Menachos use
the expression '*Hiskin* Raban Yochanan ben Zakai'?
7)
(a) What did they used to do with their Lulavim when the first day of Sukos
fell on Shabbos?
(b) In which way would the Halachah differ if Shabbos fell on another day of
Sukos (after Raban Yochanan ben Zakai's Takanah to Bensch Lulav throughout
Sukos)?
(c) What does Rebbi Yossi say about someone who carried his Lulav into the
street on the first day of Sukos that fell on Shabbos?
8)
(a) From where do we learn that one cannot fulfill the Mitzvah of Lulav with
someone else's Lulav on the first day of Sukos?
(b) And what do we learn from "u'Lekachtem"?
9)
(a) Of the four Tana'im who were traveling together on the ship, only Raban
Gamliel had a set of Arba Minim. How were they all Yotze with his set on
the first day of Sukos?
(b) Why does the Beraisa need to add that each of them returned it to Raban
Gamliel?
(c) What important ruling does Rava add to this?
(d) Why does the Tana need to inform us that Raban Gamliel paid a thousand
Zuz for his set?
10)
(a) Why during the Amidah, is one forbidden to hold ...
- ... a knife?
- ... a dish of food?
- ... a loaf?
- ... money?
(b) Is one permitted to Daven the Amidah holding Tefilin or a Sefer-Torah?
(c) That being so, how could Ameimar inform Rav Ashi that his father used to
hold the Lulav during the Amidah?
11)
(a) What did the men of Yerushalayim used to do with their Lulav when they
left the house, went to Shul, or recited the Shema or the Amidah?
(b) On which other occasions would they take their Lulav with them?
(c) On which occasion would they ...
- ... put it on the floor?
- ... send it home with a Sheli'ach?
(d) What do we learn from all this?
