Sukah 4
1) [line 1] V'AF AL GAV D'VATLINHU [L'CHULHU] - even though he expressly
nullified all of the items (thus making them part of the ground of the
Sukah)
2) [line 1] BATLAH DA'ATO ETZEL KOL ADAM - his intention is nullified by the
conduct of all people (that is, nobody has intention to leave sheets and
pillows as part of the ground, and therefore when he expressly nullifies
them, his intention is ineffective)..
3) [line 10] HUTZIN - the branches of the Sechach (which extend into the
Sukah and which are prickly)
4) [line 14] DIRAH SERUCHAH - an uninhabitable dwelling
5) [line 16] ITZTEVA - a raised platform
6) [line 18] HECHSHER SUKAH - the minimum qualifications to be a valid Sukah
(three walls enclosing an area of at least 7 X 7 Tefachim)
7) [line 22] DOFEN AKUMAH
Literally, "a bent wall;" this is an Halachic mechanism whereby a wall is
viewed as bending over to meet another plane (the roof of the Sukah), under
the condition that the roof is within four Amos of the wall. Through this
mechanism, a Sukah is valid even if the perimeter of the Sechach (up to four
Amos in width) is composed of material that is invalid for Sechah.
8) [line 23] SHE'NIFCHAS - broken (the roof of a house was broken)
9) [line 26] D'CHAZYA L'DOFEN - it is fit to be a wall
10) [line 29] B'EMTZE'ISAH - in the middle of the Sukah, away from the walls
11) [line 35] CHAKAK - he dug out
4b---------------------------------------4b
12) [line 1] PACHOS MI'SHELOSHAH (LEVUD)
If the distance between two partitions is less than three Tefachim, then the
mechanism of "Levud" takes effect to join the two partitions into one
13) [line 5] L'SHAVUYEI L'DOFEN - to make it into a valid wall
14) [line 8] GUD ASIK
A principle which states that an existing wall is viewed to continue
upwards, creating a partition even though there is no physical wall there
15) [line 10] KUNDEISIN - pegs
16) [line 31] DEYOMAD (PASEI BIRA'OS)
Lit. "two pillars" ("Diyo Amudin"); an L-shaped stand which has two sides
perpendicular to each other, each of which is at least one Tefach long. When
four such stands are placed at the four corners of a given area, that area
is considered to be enclosed by partitions, for each Deyomad -- with its two
sides -- is like two Mechitzos. This is the principle whereby the Rabanan
permitted carrying on Shabbos within "Pasei Bira'os;" by viewing the area
within these pillars as a single Reshus ha'Yachid, the Rabanan permitted the
wayfarers to draw water from the well within the area surrounded by the four
Deyomadim.
