1) [line 4] KITONIYOS - small chambers, enclosed areas
2) [line 19] A'PUMA D'MATULTA - in the entrance of the Sukah
3) [line 44] MA'AKEH - a fence. The Torah (Devarim 22:8) commands that a
fence be built around the roof of one's home in order to prevent one from
falling off. This requirement does not apply to a house which is less than
four by four Amos.
4) [line 44] EINO METAMEI B'NEGA'IM (NIG'EI BATIM - Tzara'as that infects
houses)
The marks of Tzara'as for houses consist of streaks or spots that are
intense green or intense red. These laws do not apply to a house which is
less than four by four Amos.
(a) If Tzara'as is found on the walls of a house, it is put into quarantine
by a Kohen for a week.
(b) The Kohen returns after seven days to check the house. If the Tzara'as
has spread, one must remove (Choletz) the stones with Tzara'as from the
house, scrape off the surrounding plaster, insert new stones and re-plaster
the entire house. The house is then put into quarantine for another week. If
the Tzara'as returns to the house during the following week, the owner must
dismantle (Notetz) the entire house (Vayikra 14:45). The stones from the
house must be taken out of the city, and they remain Asur b'Hana'ah forever.
(c) On the other hand, if the Tzara'as did not change after the first week,
the Kohen leaves it as is and returns again seven days later. If, after the
second week, the Tzara'as has *either* remained *or* spread, one must remove
(Choletz) the stones with Tzara'as from the house, scrape off the
surrounding plaster, insert new stones and re-plaster the entire house. The
house is then put into quarantine for another week (Vayikra 14:40). If the
Tzara'as returns to the house during the following week, the owner must
dismantle (Notetz) the entire house (Vayikra 14:45). The stones from the
house must be taken out of the city, and they remain Asur b'Hana'ah forever.
5) [line 45] EINO NECHELAT B'VATEI AREI CHOMAH
Batei Arei Chomah are houses from a city which was walled at the time of
Yehoshua's conquest of Israel. If a person sold a house which was in one of
the Arei Chomah, the Torah gives him the right to purchase it back within
*one year* of selling it. If he does not buy it back during that time, it
becomes the permanent property of the buyer. This Halachah does not apply to
a house which is less than four Amos by four Amos.
6) [line 45] EIN CHOZRIN ALAV ME'ORCHEI HA'MILCHAMAH - one who built a new
house, which is less than four by four Amos, is not exempt from going out
with the army to battle. The Torah (Devarim 20:5) exempts one who has just
built a new house from going with the army to battle. This applies only to a
house which is four by four Amos.
7) [line 46] EIN ME'ARVIN BO (EIRUVEI CHATZEIROS) - the inhabitants of the
house (which is less than four by four Amos) do not have to participate in
the Eruv Chatzeiros
(a) THE TORAH LAW - According to Torah law, in a courtyard (Chatzer) which
has in it houses owned by different people, all of the neighbors may
transfer objects from their houses to the courtyard and into other houses on
Shabbos. Even though each house is a separately owned Reshus ha'Yachid and
the Chatzer is a joinly owned Reshus ha'Yachid, it is permissible to move
objects from one Reshus ha'Yachid to another.
(b) ERUV CHATZEIROS - King Shlomo decreed that transferring objects from one
Reshus ha'Yachid to another is forbidden unless an *Eruv Chatzeiros* (lit. a
mixing of the courtyard, Rambam Hil. Eruvin 1:6; or fraternization of the
courtyard, Eruvin 49a) is created on Friday, before Shabbos begins (Shabbos
14b, Eruvin 21b). The equivalent of an Eruv Chatzeiros for an alley or a
city is called a *Shituf Mavo'os*. This is accomplished by all of the
neighbors collectively setting aside a loaf of bread, in one common
container, in one of the houses of the courtyard (or, in the case of Shituf,
in one of the courtyards of the alleyway). This shows that all neighbors
have an equal share in all of the Reshuyos ha'Yachid, just as they all have
a share in that bread. Through this act, they can be considered one Reshus
again. (RAMBAM ibid. 1:4-9)
8) [last line] EIN MISHTATFIN BO (SHITUFEI MAVO'OS) - the inhabitants do not
have to participate in the Shituf of the Mavoy, see previous entry
9) [last line] EIN MANICHIN BO EIRUV - the other dwellers of the courtyard
may not place their Eruv in this house that is less than four by four Amos
3b---------------------------------------3b
10) [line 1] EIN OSIN OSO IBUR BEIN SHTEI AYAROS (IBURAH SHEL IR - the city
limits)
(a) On Shabbos or Yom Tov, a person is allowed to walk only a distance of
2000 Amos, approximately 960 meters (3147 feet) or 1,152 meters (3774 feet),
depending upon the differing Halachic opinions, from his city (or dwelling
place if he is not in a city).
(b) If permanent or temporary dwellings are located within 70 2/3 Amos of
the city, Iburo Shel Ir (the city limits) extend until the last dwelling,
and the 2000 Amos are measured from there. A house less than four by four
Amos does not extend the city limits
(c) If permanent or temporary dwellings are located between two cities,
within 70 2/3 Amos of each, the two cities are combined into one, and the
2000 Amos are measured from outer perimeter of both cities combined.
11a) [line 18] BEIS SHA'AR - a gateway that may be enclosed by walls on all
four sides and covered by a roof (MISHNAH BERURAH 370:1)
b) [line 18] ACHSADRAH - an area that is covered by a roof and is enclosed
on three of its sides (Eruvin 25a, TOSFOS DH Achsadrah b'Vik'ah)
c) [line 18] MIRPESES - a common balcony by which the residents of a second
story go down to the courtyard and out to Reshus ha'Rabim
12) [line 23] BURGANIN - temporary huts of the watchmen that guard the
fields (which can be used to extend the city limits)
13a) [line 24] DEL'MEHEVEI KAI - which is going to remain standing
b) [line 25] DEL'MISTAR KAI - which is going to be torn down
14a) [last line] KARIM - mattresses
b) [last line] KESASOS - pillows
