Shabbos 128

1)

(a) Raban Shimon ben Gamliel permits the moving of Lof on Shabbos. What does he say about moving ...
  1. ... broken pieces of glass?
  2. ... detached vine-branches?
(b) Why the difference?

(c) From where do we know that one does not actually need to own ostriches for the pieces of glass to be permitted?

2)
(a) What do the following Tana'im have in common: Raban Shimon ben Gamliel, Rebbi Shimon, Rebbi Yishmael and Rebbi Akiva?

(b) What does Rebbi Shimon say about princes and rose-oil?

(c) What do Rebbi Yishmael and Rebbi Akiva say about someone who owes a thousand Manah and is who is wearing a very expensive coat?

(d) The Tana Kama of our Mishnah permits bundles of straw etc., only if they were designated as animal fodder before Shabbos Otherwise, they are assumed to be fire-wood.
What does Raban Shimon ben Gamliel say about this? What is his reason?

3)
(a) Which two functions do the following serve: savory, hyssop and pennyroyal plants? When is one permitted to move them on Shabbos?

(b) In which manner is one permitted to cut them into small pieces on Shabbos?

(c) According to Rebbi Yehudah, one is permitted to roll them (to remove the seeds) even using an implement, provided one does not roll many at a time.
What do the Chachamim say about this?

(d) Does this latter Halachah also apply to mint, the rue-plant and all other kinds of spices, or is it is confined to the above-mentioned three?

4)
(a) May one move raw, salted meat on Shabbos?

(b) Rav Chisda forbids moving unsalted meat; Rav Huna permits it. How do we reconcile this with the fact that Rav Huna holds like his Rebbi, Rav, who holds, in turn, like Rebbi Yehudah, with regard to Muktzah?

(c) And how do we reconcile Rav Chisda here, with his own ruling that one is permitted to move a raw, unsalted goose from the sun into the shade?

(d) Why does the Beraisa forbid raw, unsalted fish on Shabbos, but permit raw, unsalted meat? Does this Beraisa go like Rebbi Yehudah or like Rebbi Shimon (See Tosfos - DH 'Dag')?

5)
(a) Are bones Muktzah on Shabbos?

(b) The Tana Kama permits water that has been left uncovered to be moved on Shabbos, because cats can safely drink it.
What does Raban Shimon ben Gamliel say about that?

6)

(a) What is the Chidush of the Mishnah, which permits overturning a basket for the chicks to hop on and off?

(b) May one return a hen that ran away from its coop?

(c) In which way are we more lenient with young calves and fillies than with chickens in this regard?

(d) The Tana of our Mishnah permits a woman to be Medadeh her son to encourage him to walk.
How does Rebbi Yehudah (who does not argue with the Tana Kama) qualify this Heter?

7)
(a) Rav permits placing cushions underneath an animal that has fallen into a deep pool of water, to enable it to climb out. How do we reconcile this ruling with the Beraisa, which permits only feeding it where it is, but no more?

(b) Considering that placing the cushions there is 'Mevatel K'li me'Hechano', why is it permitted?

8)
(a) Why is the Diduy of an animal forbidden in the street, whereas that of a child is permitted?

(b) How do we reconcile the Beraisa, which permits even the *Diduy* of birds in a courtyard on Shabbos, with the Beraisa, which permits only pushing them, but not Diduy?

(c) What should one take care to do, when Shechting a hen?

9)
(a) What is the difference between assisting *a woman* in child-birth on Yom-tov, and assisting *an animal*?

(b) What other leniency applies to a woman over an animal in this regard?

(c) The Tana Kama permits tying the umbilical cord on Shabbos.
What does Rebbi Yossi hold?

(d) Rav Yehudah explains assisting the animal to mean holding the baby when it emerges, to prevent it from falling to the ground.
Which other two things are included in 'assisting'?

10)
(a) How does Rav Nachman explain 'assisting'?

(b) Raban Shimon ben Gamliel gave testimony: 'Merachamin Hayinu al Behemah Tehorah be'Yom-Tov'. Which two independent acts comprise 'Merachamin'?

(c) Why did he restrict this Heter to a Beheimah Tehorah?

11)
(a) Besides calling a midwife from another town, one may also light a fire for a woman who has given birth.
What is the Chidush? Is this not obvious?

(b) How does one bring her oil, should she need it?

(c) What is the Heter to bring oil in one's hair? What has happened to the Isur of Sechitah (i.e. then one may as well carry it in one's hands. What is the point of the Shinuy)?

(d) Rav Ashi establishes the Beraisa even if Sechitah were to apply to hair. Then how does he answer the Kashya in c.? How does he establish the case?
