Shabbos 108
1)
(a) Rav Huna states that one is permitted to write Tefilin on the skin of a
Kasher bird. Why might we have thought otherwise?
(b) Why is it, in fact, permitted?
(c) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Vayikra "ve'Shisa Oso bi'Chenafav"?
(d) Some ask the Kashya that, if the bird's skin *is* considered skin, how
could the Torah allow it to be brought on the Mizbei'ach (since the skin of
Korbanos is *not* permitted on the Mizbei'ach)?
Others ask that, if it is *not* considered skin, then why would the Torah
find it necessary to include it? Why would we have thought *not* to bring
it together with the flesh of the bird? How does the Gemara answer each
Kashya?
Note: the Gemara is not concerned with the feathers, even though they are
still attached to the bird when it is brought on the Mizbei'ach - see
Tosfos D.H. 've'I'.
2)
(a) What do we learn from the Mishnah in Kelim: 'Atzmos ha'Dag ve'Oro,
Matzilin be'Ohel ha'Mes'?
(b) Why is that?
(c) Then why do we need Eliyahu to help us resolve the Sha'aleh whether
Tefilin may be written on the skin of a Tahor fish?
(d) Why can Eliyahu not simply reveal the Halachah to us?
3)
(a) How did Shmuel read the signs, when he saw the River Malka, which
flowed from Eretz Yisrael to Bavel, looking turbid and bringing up high
waves of black water?
(b) What was Karna expected to do when Shmuel told him 'Zil Tehi Bei
be'Kankanei'?
(c) He asked him three questions. The first question he asked him was: From
where do we know that Tefilin must be written on the skin of a Kasher
animal? What did Rav answer?
(d) To the second question, he answered with the Pasuk in Melachim 2:
"va'Yir'u Mo'av Mineged es ha'Mayim ke'Dam". What was Karna's question,
and what were its ramifications?
4)
(a) The third question concerned the Mitzvah of B'ris Milah: How does
Rav derive (from Orlah) that the Mitzvah of Milah is performed on the Ever
ha'Milah?
(b) The Torah also writes "Orlas" by the heart and by the tongue, so how do
we know not to learn the Gezeirah Shavah from there?
(c) Rav's opinion is also that of the Tana, Rebbi Yashiyah. From where
does Rebbi Nasan derive it?
(d) What was Rav's reaction to Karna's welcome?
(e) Shmuel took him to his house. What did Shmuel do that caused Rav to
curse him that he should have no children?
5)
(a) May one write Tefilin on the skin of ...
- ... a Kasher Chayah
- ... an animal which is a Neveilah or a Tereifah?
(b) What does 've'Nikrachos be'Sa'aran, ve'Nitfaros be'Gidan' mean, and
what is the source for this?
(c) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Sh'mos "Lema'an Tihye Toras Hashem
be'Ficha".
(d) Then why may they be written on Neveilos and Tereifos?

(b) Why did Rav Dimi mention only people? Does this mean that beams *did*

(c) One is permitted to swim in the Salt-Sea, but not to 'open and close
the eyes', when its water is applied as a cure. Why the difference?

which in the name of Levi?

What are the following the cause of:
- Yad le'Ayin?
- Yad le'Ozen?
- Yad le'Peh O le'Chotem?
(b) How does one avoid the above problem?
(c) The Beraisa also includes 'Yad le'Peh and Yad le'Amah' in the list.
In what way do these two differ from those in the above list?
(d) What three functions do eye-paint serve?
