Shabbos 107
1)
(a) If a bird flies into one's coat on Shabbos, and becomes trapped there,
is one obligated to set it free, seeing as he is causing the deer to remain
trapped?
(b) What does the Gemara ask from 'Patur' in our Mishnah?
(c) How does the Gemara prove that Patur in our Mishnah means Mutar?
2)
(a) Mefis Mursa is also Patur u'Mutar. Sometimes, Mefis Mursa is Chayav.
When is it Mutar, and when is it Chayav?
(b) How does the Gemara prove that Patur means Patur u'Mutar?
(c) Which other case - also to do with Tzeidah - is Patur u'Mutar, and how
do we know that?
Hadran Alach, 'ha'Oreg'!
Perek Shemoneh Sheratzim
3)
(a) The eight Sheratzim are - the weasel, the mouse, the ferret and the
hedgehog; the chameleon, the lizard, the snail and the mole. In which
two ways (regarding Shabbos) are the eight Sheratzim listed in the Torah
different than all other Sheratzim?
(b) Which Melachah does one transgress when one makes a wound?
(c) Why would the author of our Mishnah appear to be Rebbi Yochanan ben
Nuri?
(d) How does the Gemara establish it even like the Rabbanan?
Answers to questions
107b---------------------------------------107b
4)
(a) The Rabbanan listed separately four of the eight Sheratzim: the
hedgehog, the chameleon, the lizard and the snail. The Gemara initially
quotes the Chachamim as saying 'Ein Or Ela le'Mah she'Manu Chachamim'.
What is wrong with that statement, and how does the Gemara first attempt to
amend it.
(b) Rava disagrees with the initial amendment, because one cannot just
twist a Beraisa to say the opposite of what it states. He therefore changes
the text to 'Ein Or Metamei ke'Basar Ele le'Mah she'Manu Chachamim' (i.e.
only those four, but not all eight). What is wrong with this suggestion
(in view of Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri's opinion)?
(c) Rav Ada bar Masna amends the Beraisa to read 'va'Chachamim Omrim,
le'Inyan Tum'ah, Ein Or le'Mah she'Manu Chachamim (but regarding Shabbos,
they agree with Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri, as we explained). In that
case, how do we explain the Beraisa, which writes that only someone who
wounds one of the four Sheratzim which have skin, is Chayav?
(d) Is one Chayav for bruising a person on Shabbos?
5)
Since we have concluded that the Rabbanan agree with Rebbi Yochanan ben
Nuri with regard to Shabbos, why does the Beraisa at the foot of Amud Alef
read 'Divrei Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri', suggesting that the Rabbanan argue?
6)
(a) Rebbi Yehudah is Mechayev only someone who wounds those Sheratzim with
skin. How many Sheratzim does that comprise?
(b) According to the Rabbanan, only four Sheraztim are Tamei, yet by
Shabbos, they agree with Rebbi Yochanan ben Nuri, who is Mechayev any of
the eight. What is the basis of the Machlokes between Rebbi Yehudah and
the Rabbanan?
7)
(a) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Yirmiyah "ha'Yahafoch Kushi Oro,
ve'Namer Chabarburasov"?
(b) Why can the latter phrase not be understood literally?
8)
(a) Rav Yirmiyah thought that the author of our Mishnah, which renders
someone who kills any type of Sheretz, Chayav, must be Rebbi Eliezer.
To which statement of Rebbi Eliezer was he referring?
(b) How does the Gemara go on to establish the Mishnah even like the
Rabbanan?
(c) The Machlokes between Rebbi Eliezer and the Rabbanan lies in the rams,
which were Shechted for their skins - in the construction of the Mishkan - . What does each one learn from the rams?
9)
(a) How do we reconcile the statement that lice do not reproduce, with the
statement in Avodah Zarah (3b.) - that Hashem feeds all creatures -
'mi'Karnei Re'eimim ad *Beitzei Kinim*'? Does this not suggest that lice
*do*, in fact, reproduce?
(b) And how do we reconcile the Rabbanan, who maintain that one is Chayav
for killing Sheratzim that reproduce, with Rebbi Yehoshua, who holds that
one is Patur for trapping a flea, which reproduces?
10)
(a) Who must be the author of our Mishnah, which rules that someone who
traps Sheratzim which are not needed, is Patur?
(b) Rebbi Shimon is also the author of the Beraisa, which rules that
someone who squeezes pus from a boil with the sole intention of extracting
the pus, is Patur. Which is the third case in this group, which must
go like Rebbi Shimon?
11)
(a) At which stage is one Chayav because of Netilas Neshamah, for removing
a fish from the sea?
(b) Is 'turns dry' to be taken literally?
(c) Why is one Chayav for placing one's hand in the womb of an animal and
moving a fetus? What is the source for this?
(d) One is also Chayav for detaching a mushroom from its place of growth on
a barrel. Why is this different than plucking a plant from a plant-pot
that has no hole in it?
