Nedarim 60

1) DOES THE PART PLANTED BECOME NULLIFIED?

(a) We infer, added permitted growth nullifies the forbidden bulb!
(b) Question (Mishnah): If Terumah is planted, the growth is Terumah.
(c) Answer: R. Chanina referred to a case of planting an onion that grew from a planted Terumah onion.
(d) Question: This was taught in a Mishnah - R. Chanina would not need to teach it!
1. (Mishnah): What grows from what grows from Terumah is not Terumah.
(e) Answer: R. Chanina teaches even in the case of something that is planted, and what is planted remains.
(f) Question (Mishnah): If untithed produce is planted - if the seed disintegrates, the growth is permitted; if the seed remains, even the growth of the growth is forbidden!
(g) If the additional growth exceeds the amount planted, it is permitted.

2) VOWS OF LIMITED DURATION

(a) (Mishnah): 'Wine is forbidden to me today' - it is only forbidden until nightfall; 'this week' - it is forbidden the whole week, including the coming Shabbos;
1. 'This month' - it is forbidden the entire month, and Rosh Chodesh is considered part of the next month;
2. 'This year' - it is forbidden the entire year, and Rosh Hashanah is considered part of the next year;
3. 'This Shemitah cycle' - it is forbidden the remainder of the cycle, including the coming Shemitah.
(b) If he said '1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, or 1 Shemitah', he is forbidden for that amount of time, from day to day.
(c) 'Until Pesach' - he is forbidden until Pesach comes; 'Until it will be Pesach' - he is forbidden until the end of Pesach.
(d) 'Until Lifne Pesach' - R. Meir says, until it comes; R. Yosi says, until the end of Pesach.
(e) (Gemara - Mishnah): 'Wine is forbidden to me today' ...
(f) (R. Yirmiyah): After dark, he must seek annulment of his vow from a Chacham.
(g) Question: Why?
(h) Answer #1 (Rav Yosef): This is a decree on account of the case when he says '1 day'.
60b---------------------------------------60b

(i) Question (Abaye): If so, we should also decree when he says '1 day' on account of when he says 'Today'!
(j) Answer (Rav Yosef): There is need for a decree only when he says 'Today'.
1. If when he says 'Today' he is permitted at nightfall, he may come to think that the same applies when he says '1 day'.
2. When he says '1 day', he is forbidden for 24 hours - this will not lead him to drink on the same day when he says 'Today'.
(k) (Ravina): R. Yirmiyah holds as R. Noson.
1. (Beraisa - R. Noson): One who vows is as one who builds a private altar (when this is forbidden); completing the vow (i.e. not annulling it) is as offering a sacrifice on this altar. (Therefore, we fine him and require him to request annulment.)
3) HOW LONG IS HE FORBIDDEN?
(a) (Mishnah): 'This week' - he is forbidden the entire week ,,,
(b) Question: This is obvious!
(c) Answer: One might have thought, he meant the weekdays; we hear, this is not so.
(d) (Mishnah): 'This month' - he is forbidden the entire month, and Rosh Chodesh counts as part of the next month.
(e) Question: This is obvious!
(f) Answer: We need to hear the case of a short (29 day) month.
1. One might have thought, Rosh Chodesh should count as the 30th day of this month, and he is forbidden.
2. We hear, this is not so - people call it the beginning of the coming month.
(g) (Mishnah): 'This year' - he is forbidden the entire year ...
(h) Question: 'Wine is forbidden to me a day - what is the law?
1. Is this considered as 'Today', or as '1 day'?
(i) Answer #1 (Mishnah): 'Wine is forbidden to me today' - it is only forbidden until nightfall.
1. We infer, if he said 'a day', it would be forbidden for 24 hours.
(j) Objection: But the end of the Mishnah says, if he says '1 day', he is forbidden for 24 hours - we infer, if he said 'a day', he would be permitted at nightfall!
1. It must be, one of these inferences is invalid; we cannot settle our question from the Mishnah.
(k) Answer #2 (Rav Ashi - Mishnah): 'Wine is forbidden to me this year' - if the year is made a leap year, he is also forbidden in the added month.
1. Question: What is the case?
