Nazir 18
1) WHEN DOES A TAMEI NAZIR SHAVE?
i. Support: Presumably, this is correct - if it
meant shaving as a Tamei Nazir, an absolute
leper also shaves!
ii. Rejection: No - the Kal va'Chomer is based on
the fact that he shaves for Nezirus, but the
leper does not shave for Nezirus.
(b) Answer #3 (Beraisa): "And the Nazir's head became Tamei"
- the verse speaks of a Tahor Nazir that became Tamei,
that he must shave and bring birds (as a sacrifice);
(c) It exempts one who was Tamei from the start from shaving
and birds.
1. A Kal va'Chomer says that he should be obligated.
i. One who was Tahor and became Tamei must shave
and bring birds - all the more so, one who was
Tamei from the start!
2. "And the Nazir's head became Tamei" - the verse
speaks of a Tahor Nazir that became Tamei, that he
must shave and bring birds, and exempts one who was
Tamei from the start from shaving and birds.
2) WHEN DOES NEZIRUS TAHARAH BEGIN?
(a) Question: Who is the Tana of the following Beraisa?
1. (Beraisa): The only difference between a Tamei
person that accepted Nezirus and a Tahor Nazir that
became Tamei, is that the 7th day (on which he
becomes Tahor) counts towards the Nezirus of the
former, but not of the latter.
(b) Answer (Rav Chisda): Rebbi, who says that Nezirus Taharah
does not start until day 8.
1. R. Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah holds that it starts on day
7.
2. (Beraisa - Rebbi): "He will sanctify his head on
that day" - on the day of bringing his sacrifices;
3. R. Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah says, on the day he shaves.
(c) Question: Who is the Tana of the following Mishnah?
1. (Mishnah): A Nazir that became Tamei several times
only brings one (set of) sacrifices.
(d) Answer (Rav Chisda): R. Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah, who says
that Nezirus Taharah begins on day 7.
1. The case of 1 set of sacrifices for several Tum'os
is found when he became Tamei on day 7, and again on
day 7.
i. Since he became Tamei before he was fit to
bring his sacrifice, he only brings 1.
2. If you would say the Mishnah is as Rebbi - if he
became Tamei on day 7, and again on day 7 - this is
as 1 long Tum'ah!
i. If he became Tamei on day 8, and again on day 8
- since this was the time to bring his
sacrifice, he is obligated to bring a set for
each Tum'ah!
(e) Question: What is Rebbi's reason?
(f) Answer: "He will atone for him,..."; after this, "He will
sanctify his head".
1. R. Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah says, if so, the verse
should end "He will sanctify his head".

2. Rhetorical question: Why does it also say "On that
day"?
3. Answer: Since we do not need it to teach that he
starts Nezirus Taharah on day 8, it teaches that he
starts on day 7.
(g) Question: How does Rebbi expound "On that day"?
(h) Answer: It teaches that he starts on day 8, even before
bringing his sacrifices.
(i) Question: What forced Rav Chisda to explain that the
Mishnah is as R. Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah?
1. He could explain as Rebbi - the Nazir became Tamei
on the night of the 8th!
(j) Suggestion: He did not say that, because he holds that
the previous night is considered as if the time for the
sacrifice has arrived (and he would have to bring
sacrifices for each Tum'ah).
(k) Rejection (Rav Ada bar Ahavah): Whether or not the
previous night is considered as if the time for the
sacrifice has arrived, the Mishnah cannot be as Rebbi,
since the beginning of Nezirus Taharah and the obligation
for another sacrifice go together.
1. If the previous night is not considered as if the
time for the sacrifice has arrived - the Nezirus
Taharah does not start until morning, (and it is as
1 long Tum'ah).
2. If the previous night is considered as if the time
for the sacrifice has arrived - the Nezirus Taharah
starts on the night of the 8th (and he must bring a
sacrifice for each Tum'ah).
(l) (Beraisa - Rebbi Eliezer (The Gra's text - Rebbi)): If he
became Tamei on day 7, and again on day 7 - he only
brings 1 set of sacrifices;
(m) If he became Tamei on day 8, and again on day 8, he must
bring a set for each Tum'ah;
(n) He starts Nezirus Taharah immediately;
(o) Chachamim say, he brings one set for all the Tum'os,
unless he already brought the sin-offering;
1. If he brought the sin-offering and became Tamei; he
brought the sin-offering and became Tamei - he
brings (the remaining) sacrifices for each Tum'ah.
2. If he brought the sin-offering, and did not bring
the guilt-offering, he begins Nezirus Taharah;
3. R. Yishma'el, son of R. Yochanan ben Berokah says,
just as he does not begin until bringing the
sin-offering, he does not begin until bringing the
guilt-offering.
(p) We understand Rebbi (Eliezer) - the verse says "He will
sanctify his head on that day", even before bringing his
sacrifices;
1. Chachamim expound, "On that day" - even though he
has not brought his guilt-offering.
(q) Question: What does R. Yishmael learn from "On that day"?
(r) Answer: He begins, even though he has not brought his
burnt-offering.
1. Chachamim say, we do not need a verse to teach this
- the burnt-offering is a mere gift to Hash-m, and
is not needed for atonement.
(s) Question: What is the reason for Chachamim?
(t) Answer (Beraisa): "He will be a Nazir to Hash-m ... and
he will bring ... a guilt-offering."
1. We find that all guilt-offerings in the Torah are
essential to atonement - one would think, here also!
