Menachos 33

1) [line 1] KAMAH DI'MERACHEK MA'ALI - the farther away that he affixes it, the better (and we would have thought that affixing it outside of the entryway is better)

2) [line 3] AL SHNEI DAPIN - in two columns
3) [line 4] SHNEI SIPIN - the two doorposts [of an entryway]
4) [line 5] RE'UYAH LI'SHNEI SIPIN - [do not read that the Beraisa is referring to a case where he actually affixed it to the two doorposts, but rather that it was written in two columns, and it is] *possible* for [him to cut it in half and affix the two parts to] two doorposts

5) [line 6] HEIKER TZIR - the indication of a hinge-pin. We affix the Mezuzah to the right doorpost when entering the room in which there is a hole for the hinge-pin (RASHI).

6) [line 7] AVKESA - a socket for the door hinge-pin
7) [line 8] HEICHI DAMI? - In what situation does the ruling of Heiker Tzir apply?

8) [line 8] PISCHA D'VEIN TREI VATEI - a doorway in between two [equally important] rooms

9a) [line 8] BEI GAVREI - the room designated for the men of the house
b) [line 9] BEI NASHEI- the room designated for the women of the house
10) [line 5] REISH GALUSA - the Exilarch, the leader of the Jews in Babylon
11) [line 11] TALI DASHI B'REISHA - (a) affix the doorposts first (RASHI);
(b) put up the door first [and we will see where the Heiker Tzir is] (TOSFOS)

12) [line 12] K'MIN NAGAR - [horizontally,] like a bolt (O.F. chevile - a wooden pin that fits into a hole in the wall -- RASHI)

13a) [line 16] HA D'AVIDA K'SICHTA - [the case that is Pasul is when he affixed it] like a bolt (see previous entry)
b) [line 16] HA D'AVIDA K'ISTEVIRA - [the Mezuzos in Rebbi house were affixed] like an ankle (with one end bent upward)

14) [line 19] RAGIL HAVAH - that was the main, normal entryway to the Beis ha'Midrash (while the entrance to the Beis ha'Midrash of Rebbi was rarely used)

15) [line 21] BI'TECHILAS SHELISH HA'ELYON - at the beginning of the upper third

16) [line 23] HA'KORAH - the ceiling beam
17) [line 27] B'GOVAH - on a high part (the front of the head -- RASHI)

33b---------------------------------------33b

18) [line 5] SHE'YIFGA - that he chances upon first, meets up with
19) [line 6] D'SINTEREI - to provide him with [more] protection (the protection starts from the location of the Mezuzah and inward)

20) [line 12] HE'EMIK LAH TEFACH - he hollowed out a Tefach-deep cavity into the doorpost for it (for the Mezuzah)

21) [line 13] PATZIN - doorpost
22) [line 14] TALAH ALEHA MALBEN - he covered it over with a brick (O.F. palastre - a patch)

23) [line 16] B'FESACH SHE'ACHOREI HA'DELES - (a) [an extra Mezuzah is needed] in an entryway right behind the door, that is one Tefach away from the first doorway. With regard to the brick, affixing it to the entryway right behind the door increased the space between the doorways (RASHI, 1st explanation); (b) [an extra Mezuzah is needed] in a case similar to the practices of the wealthy, who build a smaller entrance next to the main entrance of their mansions. (The smaller entrance is for day-to-day use while the main entrance is only used on special occasions.) The Tefach space between the entrances creates the requirement for a separate Mezuzah for each entrance. With regard to the brick, affixing it (and probably a column of them) in between the entrances creates the requirement for a separate Mezuzah for each entrance (RASHI, 2nd explanation)

24) [line 19] "KEITZAD" KETANI - the Tana of our Beraisa taught an example, in the form of "Keitzad," "for instance." "For instance, in the case of an entryway right behind the door."

25) [line 20] MALBEN SHEL KANIM - a doorframe of reeds (RASHI)
26) [line 20] CHOSECH SHEFOFERES - he cuts a [hole into a hollow reed] tube

27) [line 23] TA'ASEH V'LO MIN HA'ASUY - (lit. You must bring something about and not depend upon the thing coming about by default)
There are certain Mitzvos for which a positive action must be done in order to prepare the object for the Mitzvah; the object cannot be prepared by default. One of these Mitzvos is Mezuzah, where our Gemara illustrates that one may not attach a Mezuzah to a doorframe and then affix the doorframe to the entryway.

28) [line 24] PISCHEI SHIMA'EI - (a) ruined entryways, i.e. lacking the necessary components (RASHI); (b) desolate entryways (*Shomemim*) (RASHI to Eruvin 11a);

29a) [line 26] D'LEIS LEHU TIKRAH - (a) it does not have a lintel; (b) it does not have a ceiling
b) [line 27] D'LEIS LEHU SHEKUFEI - (a) it does not have doorposts; (b) it does not have a lintel

30) [line 28] ACHSADRAH - a structure that is covered by a roof and is enclosed on three of its sides, which stands before the entrance to the house and through which people walk in order to enter the house

31) [line 29] PETZIMIN - (O.F. uisseries) posts holding up the roof of the Achsadrah

32) [line 30] L'CHIZUK TIKRAH HU D'AVIDEI - they are made to hold up the roof

33) [line 33] L'ISPELIDEI D'VEI MAR - the Achsadros of the house of Rabah (alt. Rav -- TZON KODASHIM)

34) [line 35] BEIS SHA'AR - a gateway that is usually enclosed by a semicircular wall with a door at one side through which people pass (RASHI to Bava Basra 2b), and which contains a small guardroom next to the gate;
(b) a gateway that may be enclosed by walls on all four sides and covered by a roof (MISHNAH BERURAH 370:1)

35) [line 35] MIRPESES - (O.F. aledoir) a balcony, a landing
36) [line 35] B'ACHSADRA D'VEI RAV - the Achsadros of the house of Rav
37) [line 36] K'INDERONA MA'ALYASA HI - (O.F. chambre) - it is a proper room
38) [line 36] K'ACHSADRA ROMISA - (O.F. loge) a porch with many windows (alt. with low walls that do not reach the ceiling -- BACH #4) on the side facing Reshus ha'Rabim

39) [line 37] BEI HARZIKEI - the small rooms in between the gateway and the doorways to the houses

40a) [line 39] L'GINAH - a park, garden
b) [line 39] L'KITONIS - a small house

41) [line 41] MI'GINAH L'VAYIS - (a) the entryway from the garden to the Beis Sha'ar (RASHI, 1st explanation); (b) when one enters from the garden to the small house and the Heiker Tzir is in the house (RASHI, 2nd explanation)

42) [line 42] KITONIS IKAR - (a) the small house is the more important destination of those who pass through the gateway, and as such, the gateway (and certainly the small house) needs a Mezuzah (RASHI, 1st explanation);
(b) even if the Heiker Tzir is in the garden, the gateway needs a Mezuzah, since the argument over the placement of a Mezuzah based on the Heiker Tzir dealt with two equally important rooms, while the small house is obviously more important than the garden (according to this opinion) and the gateway is subordinate to it (RASHI, 2nd explanation)

43) [last line] BI'AH D'VAYIS HU - the verse that commands the Mitzvah of Mezuzah refers to a house, and as such, a Mezuzah is required for the small house; the gateway is subordinate to the garden, since it was mainly constructed as an entrance to the garden
