Eruvin 89

ERUVIN 88 & 89 have been dedicated by Mrs. G. Turkel (Rabbi Kornfeld's grandmother) to the memory of her husband, Yisrael Shimon (Isi) ha'Levi Turkel, who passed away on 10 Av 5780.

*****PEREK #9 KOL GAGOS*****

1) [line 10] KARPIFOS - enclosed areas that are located outside of a settlement, used for storage and other such purposes. Since it is fully enclosed, a Karpaf is a Reshus ha'Yachid even though it was not enclosed for residential purposes.

2) [line 14] DIYURIN CHALUKIN L'MATAH - the houses below have divisions separating them
3) [line 18] KOL L'MA'ALAH ME'ASARAH - any place above ten Tefachim; i.e. the entire roof

4) [line 24] TEL B'RESHUS HA'RABIM (RESHUS HA'YACHID)
Reshus Ha'yachid (the private domain) is comprised of places that have an area of at least four by four Tefachim and are enclosed by a ten-Tefach- high partition on at least three sides, such as enclosed yards, or ditches with these dimensions (since the vertical wall of the ditch acts as a partition). A ten-Tefach-high mound in Reshus ha'Rabim that is 4 by 4 Tefachim wide at its top is also a Reshus ha'Yachid, since the vertical sides of the mound are considered to be like partitions.

5) [line 26] MACHTESHES - a mortar
6) [line 26] GIGIS - a barrel
7) [line 27] AMAS HA'RECHAYIM - the stone base of a mill
*8*) [line 32] L'TALTULEI DERECH KOSEL - to carry from one Chatzer to the other over the wall that separates them. (The Gemara is assuming that two Chatzeros are separated by a wall, since that is the common scenario.)

9a) [line 37] MECHITZOS HA'NIKAROS - walls which are recognizable from above; i.e. when the houses are separated from each other and the walls can be seen from the roof
b) [line 38] MECHITZOS SHE'EINAN NIKAROS - walls which are not recognizable from above; i.e. when the houses are all attached and they share a common roof

10) [line 40] GUD ASIK MECHITZASA
(a) The Torah requires Mechitzos (partitions) for various Halachos (e.g. for Reshus ha'Yachid of Shabbos and Sukah). A Mechitzah must be ten Tefachim high and enclose an area of four by four Tefachim.
(b) Gud Asik, lit. stretch and pull up the Mechitzah (located in the house below), is a Halachic device by which Mechitzos are considered to extend upward indefinitely, if they are ten Tefachim tall.

89b---------------------------------------89b

*11*) [line 5] MI'SHMEI D'RAV AMRU - it was *said* in the name of Rav. (That is, this is not a quote from a Beraisa, but from Rav himself. The Gemara then cites what those who learned by Shmuel *learned* [Tanu], i.e. in a Beraisa. Rav must explain the Beraisa of Shmuel to conform to his opinion; Shmuel, though, does not have to relate to what was cited from Rav since it was not a Beraisa.)

12) [line 17] MECHITZAH NIDRESES - a partition/wall that is stepped on (so that we cannot say Gud Asik)

13) [line 20] GIFUFEI - the walls on either side of where the roofs are connected
14) [line 22] V'HA DIYURIN AMART LAN - but you, Rav Yosef, explicitly said "Diyurin", livable areas!?

15) [line 29] SELUKEI SELIKU NAFSHAIHU ME'HACHA - they have removed themselves from their roof

16) [line 33] DAKAH (ARBA) [ARBA'AH] - a small opening of four Tefachim from the second-story room to the first-story rooftops

*17*) [line 34] PE'AMIM SHE'HA'DAKAH L'ISUR - sometimes a Dakah built by one prohibits the others from using the roofs. (Actually, even without building a Dakah, the one who built the Aliyah on his house prohibits the others. However, the Gemara wanted to find a case where the person with the Aliyah may even carry onto the *other* roofs.)

18) [last line] TARBITZA D'VEISEI - the garden of his house
