Eruvin 88

ERUVIN 88 & 89 have been dedicated by Mrs. G. Turkel (Rabbi Kornfeld's grandmother) to the memory of her husband, Yisrael Shimon (Isi) ha'Levi Turkel, who passed away on 10 Av 5780.

*1*) [line 2] D'TANYA, MISTAPEG ADAM B'ALONTIS - that is, Rebbi Chananya ben Akavya permitted the people of Teverya to carry their wet towels home from the bathhouse, like Rebbi Shimon's ruling. Alternatively, he permitted them to dry themselves with a towel and place it in the bathhouse window, like the Tana Kama.

2) [line 4] OLIYARIN - bathhouse attendants
3) [line 4] AL OSO DAVAR - that is, to wring out towels
4) [line 8] UKAH - a pit that can contain two Se'ah of water
5) [line 8] HANEI TAIMEI - the water that is poured in the Ukah terminate; i.e. it is absorbed into the ground of the Ukah

6) [line 15] B'MUFLEGES - if the upper balcony is located at a horizontal distance of four Tefachim from the lower balcony

7) [line 19] YESH GEZEL B'SHABBOS - transferring objects from a Reshus ha'Yachid owned by one person or group to a Reshus ha'Yachid owned by another person or group is forbidden, unless an Eruv Chatzeiros is created on Friday, before Shabbos begins (Shabbos 14b, Eruvin 21b). All inhabitants of a courtyard must make an Eruv Chatzeiros together. There is an argument among the Amora'im as to whether a person who uses a Chatzer without permission ("Gezel") is considered an inhabitant, and prohibits the residents from carrying in it if he is not joined in their Eruv Chatzeiros.

8) [line 28] ANA BA'HADACH LO NICHA LI - I do not want to be associated with your opening

9) [line 30] UKAH - a pit
10) [line 31] LIKMOR - to cover the pit. The pit must be covered to make it Chorei Reshus ha'Yachid or a Makom Petur (MEIRI) or because of Mar'is ha'Ayin (RAMBAM)

*11*) [line 32] BIV - This is a ditch or open pipe that empties into Reshus ha'Rabim, unlike an Ukah which is just a pit with no outlet. (This is the reason the Chachamim are Machmir when one pours into the Biv. The Biv has an outlet into Reshus ha'Rabim, and if water is poured into it the water will *rush out* at the other end.)

*12*) [line 35] V'CHEN SHTEI DEYUTA'OS - (Rashi's text of the Mishnah did not include the word "v'Chen." This is the beginning of a new part of the Mishnah. Rabeinu Yehonasan did have the word "v'Chen" in his Mishnah. He explained that this is part of the previous Halachah in the Mishnah; that is, two Deyota'os are like a Chatzer and Achsadra and may be joined to make up an area containing Se'asayim. The words "Miktzasan Asu Ukah" which follow, begin a new section of the Mishnah. See also Ritva, who discusses the Girsa.)

13) [last line] L'ZALFAN - to sprinkle them on the ground so that the dust will settle

88b---------------------------------------88b

14) [line 1] SHOFCHAN - he pours them out
15) [line 2] TAIMEI - the water is absorbed in the ground
16) [line 23] L'KALE'ACH - to make the water shower into Reshus ha'Rabim
*17*) [line 26] V'HAREI SHOFCHIN - that is, why is it not permitted to pour directly into a Biv, if the person wants the water to become absorbed in the Biv? (This question is not entirely clear. The Gemara earlier explained that our Mishnah holds it is not permitted to pour water unless the Chatzer is fit for Ziluf, sprinkling water on it. The Biv is long and narrow, why should it be permitted to pour into it just because the water will be absorbed in it? See NACHAL ARAVIM; GE'ON YAKOV)

18) [line 27] MIKALKELA V'KAIMA - it is already a mess because of the rainwater
*19*) [line 34] AMAR ABAYE, HILKACH AFILU KUR - Abaye disagrees with Rav Nachman regarding the interpretation of the Beraisa cited above that differentiates between Yemos ha'Chamah and Yemos ha'Geshamim.

20) [line 36] NEFISHA D'MAYA - the overabundance of water
21a) [line 37] GISTERA - a broken earthenware utensil
b) [line 37] BEREICHAH - a wide trench
c) [line 37] AREIVAH - a small boat
