We all learned mnemonics in school at one time or another to help us remember categories, names, spellings, and other tricky bits of information. Here are some common memory aids that fall into this category.

For colors of the rainbow: ROY G. BIV (Which stands for: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.)

To spell the word "geography": George Eliot's old grandfather rode a pig home yesterday.

For the categories of the animal kingdom: Kind pigs care only for good slop. (Which stands for: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.)

For the notes on the lines of the musical treble clef: Every good boy does fine. (Which stands for: E, G, B, D, F.)

Encourage your child to make up his or her own mnemonics for remembering names, addresses, and other important things--like the flavors at the local ice cream parlor.
