PINCHOS "On your New moons.................................."(28:11) Seventy two hours after the new moon (some say after 7 days) a special blessing is recited called Kiddush Levanah upon seeing the new moon. (Please consult the Shulchan Aruch and/or an orthodox Rabbi concerning the specific laws of Kiddush Lavanah)In Sanhedrin 42a, it states the following: Rabbi Acha b. Chaninah said in the name of R.Yochanon, "Whoever blesses the new moon in its proper time is regarded like one who greets the Shichina (Devine Presence)................. ................(Please refer there for further details)(End of quote) A question can be asked, How is Kiddush Lavanah tantamount to having the privilage of being able to greet the Devine Presence? Or shall we say, what is it about the new moon that makes it possible for us to be able to greet the Shichina? Perhapes ,Bezrat Hashem, I would like to propose the following answer: In Megillah 31a it states, "Rabbi Yochanon said, Where ever one finds G-ds greatness being mentioned, one will also find G-ds humility. This is written in the Torah, repeated in the Prophets, and stated a third time in the Writings. Its written in the Torah,"G-d your Lord is the ultimate Supreme Being.........(Deuter.10:17). And immediately after this it says, "He brings justice to the orphan and widow..........................................Ect" Hashem is both awesome and compassionate. If one were to observe the universe it is incredibly wonderous, yet Hashem is intimately concerned with the downtrotten (orphan and widow). The moon is very similar in that at one point its grand and full, yet at another time its but a small sliver.......................................When we see the moon, it represents how Hashem relates to us as understood by Rabbi Yochanon in Megillah 31a.........................with both gradeur and kindness.........However, we must also relate to Hashem in a recipracal manner, namely with fear and love...........................Our goal and purpose in this world is to somehow discover G-d and His relationship to us....... However , we need an example to perhapes jolt us into reality..................This is precisely where the moon fits in .................because by seeing the moon shift from being grand to being just a small sliver every month , it causes a catharsis to occur and we soon realize the duality of G-ds relationship to us............................................. We are thus more prone to both fear him and love him simultaneously...............Have a good Shabbos
