Yoma 70
YOMA 59-88 have been dedicated to the memory of the late Dr. Simcha
Bekelnitzky (Simcha Gedalya ben Shraga Feibush) of Queens N.Y. by his wife
and daughters. Well known in the community for his Chesed and Tzedakah, he
will long be remembered.

1)
(a) Why did the Kohen Gadol need to announce, before closing the Sefer-
Torah, that more than what he had Leined was written in it?
(b) Why did he Lein "u've'Asor" by heart? Why could he not roll the Sefer-
Torah?
(c) One reason that he did not bring another Sefer is so that people should
not think that the first Sefer was Pasul. What is the other reason?
(d) If, when, on Rosh Chodesh, Shabbos Chanukah, we Lein from three Sefarim
- without being concerned that people might declare the first two Pasul,
why should we worry about it on Yom Kipur?
2)
(a) After the three Berachos for the Mikdash, for the Kohanim and for
Yisrael, the Kohen Gadol concluded with a Berachah 'al Sha'ar Tefilah'.
What was the gist of this Tefilah and how did it conclude?
(b) What did everybody do after the Kohen Gadol had read the Parshiyos of
Yom Kipur? What was the purpose of that?
(c) It was not possible to watch both the burning of the Par and the Sa'ir
and the Leining of the Kohen Gadol. Had it been, it *would* have been
permitted to do so. Why would we have otherwise thought that it would
*not*?
(d) What makes watching either of these two Avodos a Mitzvah?
3)
(a) If the Kohen Gadol chose to Lein in the Bigdei Lavan, he would change
his clothes into the Bigdei Zahav, with the appropriate Tevilah and two
Kidushei Yadav ve'Raglav. Which Korbanos would he then bring - according
to both Rebbi Eliezer and Rebbi Akiva?
(b) According to Rebbi Eliezer, he also brought the seven lambs of the
Musaf then. When did he bring them, according to Rebbi Akiva?
(c) What is meant by the Sa'ir ...
- ... ha'Na'aseh ba'Chutz?
- ... ha'Na'aseh bi'Fenim?
(d) The Gemara is uncertain whether, according to Rebbi Akiva, the Par
ha'Olah (of the Musaf) was brought with the Tamid shel *Shachar* or with
the shel *Bein ha'Arbayim*. Which part of the Musaf was definitely
brought together with the Tamid shel Bein ha'Arbayim - after the fifth
Tevilah?
4)
(a) What did the Kohen Gadol do after he had changed into the Bigdei Lavan
(after the *fourth* Tevilah)?
(b) And what did he do after the *fifth* Tevilah, besides bringing the
Tamid shel Bein ha'Arbayim and whatever of the Musaf had still to be
brought?
(c) What would the Kohen Gadol do before changing back into his own
clothes?
(d) People would accompany him on his way home. What did *he*
subsequently do when he arrived home?
5)
(a) The *goat* of the Chatas (of the Musaf) was definitely brought together
with the Tamid shel Bein ha'Arbayim, the *bull* might well have been
brought together with the Tamid shel Shachar - even according to Rebbi
Eliezer. About which Emurin are we also in doubt?
(b) Rava resolves these doubts from two Beraisos, one like Rebbi Eliezer,
the other, like Rebbi Akiva: According to the first Beraisa, Rebbi Eliezer
holds that the Emurin of the Par and the Sa'ir of the Chatas were brought
together with the two rams after the third Tevilah.
When were the remainder of the animals of the Musaf i.e. the bull and the
seven lambs of the Olah, and the goat of the Chatas brought?
6)
(a) According to the second Beraisa, Rebbi Akiva holds that the bulls and
the lambs of the Musaf were brought together with the Tamid shel Shachar.
From where does he learn this?
(b) When were the Emurei Chatas (of the Par and the Sa'ir) brought,
according to him?
(c) We have learned that Rebbi Akiva's reason for placing most of the Olos
of the Musafin with the Tamid shel Shachar is because of the Pasuk in
Pinchas (written in connection with the Musaf) "Milevad Olas ha'Boker Asher
le'Olas ha'Tamid". What is Rebbi Eliezer's reason?
(d) And what does
Rebbi Eliezer do with the Pasuk in Pinchas "Milevad Olas ha'Boker ... "
suggesting that the Chatas of the Musaf is brought at the same time as the
Par and the Sa'ir (*before* the two rams, and not *after* them, as he
learns)?
Answers to questions
70b---------------------------------------70b
7)
(a) According to Rebbi Yehudah, Rebbi Akiva does not hold that *all* the
lambs of the Musafin were brought with the Korban Tamid, only *one*.
When were the other six brought?
(b) How does Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon quote Rebbi Akiva?
(c) Both Tana'im base their opinions on the seemingly contradictory
Pesukim: "ve'Yatza, ve'Asah es Olaso *ve'es Olas ha'Am*" (which refers to
the Musaf, and implies that they were brought *after* the Avodas ha'Yom),
and "Milevad Olas ha'Boker" (which implies that they were brought *before*
it - together with the Tamid shel Shachar. Why does ...
1 ... Rebbi Yehudah hold that the Kohen Gadol brought only *one* of the
seven lambs *before* the Avodas ha'Yom?
2. ... Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon hold that he brought only one *after*
it?
8)
(a) Who is the Tana who holds that they brought only *one* ram - and that
the ram of the Olah of the people and the ram of the Olah of the Musaf are
one and the same?
(b) What does Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Rebbi Shimon say?
(c) Rebbi derives his opinion from the word "Ayil *Echad*" that the Torah
inserts by the Musaf. What does Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon learn from
the word "Echad"?
(d) Rebbi learns that from the Pasuk in Re'ei "ve'Chol Mivchar Nidreichem".
Why does Rebbi Elazar b'Rebbi Shimon require *two* Pesukim for that?
