REVIEW QUESTIONS ON GEMARA AND RASHI

prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Previous daf

Yoma 48

YOMA 46-48 - have been anonymously sponsored towards a REFU'AH SHELEMAH to Shmuel Yakov ben Ayala Hinda, Ilana Golda bas Chana and Klarees Marcia bas Mammie.

1)

(a) Rav Papa asks whether the Kometz will be Kasher if the Kohen, instead of placing it on the *floor* of the K'li, sticks it to its *wall*.
What are the two sides of the She'eilah? Why might it be Pasul, and why might it be Kasher?

(b) Mar bar Rav Ashi adds a She'eilah of his own:
What will be the Din if the Kohen turns the K'li upside-down and sticks the Kometz to its floor. What are the two sides to *his* She'eilah?

2)
(a) What does Rav Papa ask regarding the measure of the Me'lo Chafnav?

(b) How did Rebbi Aba resolve this She'eilah?

3) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Vayikra "ve'Lakach mi'Dam ha'Par"? Which blood must the Kohen Gadol receive, and which blood not?

4)

(a) What do we learn from the 'Mem' in "ve'Lakach *mi'*Dam ha'Par?

(b) What does 'Gor'in u'Mosifin ve'Dorshin' mean?

(c) Why can we not explain the Pasuk literally (i.e. that the Kohen needs to receive only *some* of the blood but not *all* of it)?

(d) As a result of this Derashah, when is blood that spilt and is gathered by a Kohen into a K'li, Kasher, and when is it Pasul?

5) In view of what we just learned by the *blood* that spilt, Rav Papa asks what the Din will be If the Me'lo Chafnav of *Ketores* that the Kohen took, spilt.
What are the two sides to the She'eilah?

6)

(a) Rav Papa also asks what the Din will be if the Kohen Gadol had a Machsheves Pigul during the *Chafinah* (he thought whilst taking the handful, that he would burn it tomorrow), whether, like by the Kemitzah, it would invalidate the Chafinah.
From where do we know that a Machsheves Pigul during the *Kemitzah* invalidates the Minchah?

(b) How might we learn the Chafinah from the Kemitzah?

(c) Why is this not the same She'eilah as the one that we asked above with regard to making a measure for the Chafinah (like we asked with regard to the She'eilah regarding the Ketores that protrudes from between the fingers)?

7)
(a) We resolve the previous She'eilah from a statement by Rebbi Akiva. What did Rebbi Akiva say regarding a Tevul-Yom touching a small section of the flour of a Minchah, the Ketores, the Levonah or the coals?

(b) As far as the Ketores is concerned, how do we learn from here that Linah (staying overnight off the Mizbe'ach) applies to it, too?

(c) And how do we then resolve our She'eilah concerning Machsheves Pigul from there?

(d) What problem does Rashi have with this proof from a Mishnah in Me'ilah? What does the Mishnah in Me'ilah say (regarding Linah)?

Answers to questions

48b---------------------------------------48b

8)

(a) Based on the outcome of the previous She'eilah, Rav Papa asks whether a Machsheves Pigul when taking the shovelful of coals from the Mizbe'ach for the Ketores, will also invalidate the Avodah.
What is his She'eilah? Why should this be any different than the previous case?

(b) Rashi gives two interpretations of what will become Pasul if Machshirei Mitzvah ke'Mitzvah.
What are they?

9)
(a) They asked Rav Sheshes whether a Kohen will invalidate the Avodah, if he performs the Holachah (carrying the Kaf of blood to the Mizbe'ach for Zerikah) with his left hand.
Are Kabalas ha'Dam and Zerikah Kasher, if performed with the left hand?

(b) What is the source for Holachah in the Torah?

(c) Then why should Holachah be any different than Kabalah and Zerikah?

(d) How did Rav Sheshes initially resolve the She'eilah from the Kaf and Machtah in our Mishnah?

10)
(a) Why can Rav Sheshes not resolve the above She'eilah from the Mishnah in Tamid, where the Tana writes that the first Kohen to carry the pieces on to the ramp, received (from the person who cut the Tamid into pieces) the head in his right hand, and the right hind-leg in his *left*?

(b) What do a Zar, an Onan, a drunkard and a Ba'al Mum have in common vis-a- vis Kabalah, Holachah and Zerikah?

(c) Which other P'sul, besides sitting, does the Tana add to the list? How does this prove Rav Sheshes wrong?
