Yoma 18

1) THE FOUR OR FIVES LOAVES TAKEN BY THE KOHEN GADOL

(a) (Abaye) The four in the Beraisa follows the view of Chachamim (that the Kohen Gadol gets less than half).
1. According to Rabanan he takes five.
2. The entering and departing Mishmar each take six.
3. No loaves were according for closing the gates.
4. The Kohen Gadol would take six, but Chachamim hold that he gets less than half, thus he takes five.
5. According to R. Yehudah he takes four.
6. The entering Mishmar takes seven (including two for the closing of the doors) and the departing takes five.
7. The Kohen Gadol splits ten, and thus takes four to accommodate the requirement that he get less than half.
(b) (Rava) Both the four and five are the view of Rebbi (that the Kohen Gadol takes half) and Rebbi holds like R. Yehudah (that the two are never divided).
(c) Question: Then he should get five, and not four?!
(d) Answer: It will depend on the presence of a voluntarily detained Mishmar who will take two.
(e) Question: Then why will Rebbi say he always gets five?
(f) Answer: Good question.
2) MISHNAH: THE NEXT PHASE OF PREPARATION
(a) There were elders designated to be with the Kohen Gadol through his week of separation and they would encourage him to study/review the procedure.
(b) Erev Yom Kipur they would parade the animals before him.
(c) While all week they would allow him to eat as he wishes, on Erev Yom Kipur they would avoid serving him sleep-inducing foods.
3) WHAT KIND OF KOHEN GADOL IS THIS
(a) Question: While he may have forgotten, but surely he had learned (he is the *most* learned Kohen)!?
(b) Answer: That greatness was a feature of the Mikdash Rishon.
(c) The Mikdash Sheni was corrupt in the office of Kohen Gadol.
4) THE PARADE OF ANIMALS
(a) The Beraisa taught that the Seirim were also presented.
(b) Question: Why were the Seirim not mentioned in the Mishnah?
(c) Answer: Our Tana holds that the sight of the Seirim would break his spirit since they are reminders of sin.
(d) Question: Then the Par Chatas should also not be paraded?
(e) Answer: He was aware of the sins of the Kohanim.
1. He did not know of the sins of the People at large.
2. This is in accord with the popular expression...
5) THE RESTRICTED FOODS
(a) (R. Yehudah) They fed him semolina and eggs, to clear his intestines.
(b) Certainly not! These can cause Tumah!
(c) We would refrain from feeding him AB"I, or, ABB"I, others add white wine (these are then explained).
(d) We attribute the emission of a Zav to foods that he ate.
(e) We refrain from feeding him CHGV"I, GAVA"M nor that which will bring on Tumah.
(f) Question: What is included in that last clause?
(g) Answer: Five additional items listed in the Beraisa.

(h) Oros is Gargir, called Oros owing to its effect on the eyes.
(i) This positive effect is only by "border" Gargir.

(c) Question: But we are taught that this should be avoided so that siblings not unwittingly marry one another?
(d) Answer: The children of scholars are well known.
(e) Question: But one needs seven days from the engagement?
(f) Answer #1: It was arranged in advance.
(g) Answer #2: The arrangement was only for Yichud (Pas beSalo).
7) MISHNAH: THE NEXT PHASE
(a) In the Beis Avtinas the elder Kohanim made him take an oath accompanied by tears.
(b) Depending on his level of scholarship he would either teach, or be taught, read or be read to.
