(1) These Tana'im held that the entrance from the Heichal to the Kodesh ha'Kodashim was on the northern side of the Paroches, and therefore first Haza'os were done on the northern corners of the Mizbe'ach. Rashi explains that they maintain that there was only one Paroches, and its entrance was to the north. (According to others, there were two Parochos, but both opened on the north.)
(2) These Tana'im held that the entrance from the Heichal to the Kodesh ha'Kodashim was on the southern side of the Paroches, and therefore the first Haza'os were done on the southern corners of the Mizbe'ach. There were two Parochos separating the Heichal from the Kodesh ha'Kodashim; the inner one opened to the north but the outer one, which opened to the Heichal, opened to the south.
