Yoma 52

YOMA 52 - by Reb Wolfe Rosengarten of Zurich, in honor of Rav Moshe Soloveitchik Zatzal and the Yeshiva he established in Moscow.

The numbers that appear next to certain entries represent the number assigned to those items in the diagram of the Beis ha'Mikdash of the Tiferes Yisrael (e.g. TY #43). This diagram, which will be included in a separate mailing and can be found on our site, is printed both in the Tiferes Yisrael Mishnayos (in Midos Chapter 2 or following Midos) and in Rav P. Kahati's Mishnayos (page 290, at the beginning of Midos).

1) [line 3] MESHACHAREI MANEI - his garments would get dirty from the southern wall that was blackened with soot from the smoke of the Menorah

2) [line 20] HA'TA - TY #63; the ground-level western compartments of the 38 storage compartments that were built on three levels on three sides of the Heichal. Fifteen were built on the north side (3 levels of 5), fifteen on the south side (3 levels of 5) and eight on the west side (2 levels of 3 and a top level of 2).

3) [line 22] "U'DVIR B'SOCH HA'BAYIS MI'PENIMAH HECHIN; L'SITEN SHAM ES ARON BERIS HASH-M" - "[He] prepared an Inner Sanctum in the Temple towards the inside, there to place the Ark of the Covenant of HaSh-m." (Melachim I 6:19) - This translation follows the punctuation of the verse by the Ta'amei ha'Mikra. Accordingly, the Devir refers to the Kodesh ha'Kodashim. Yosef Ish Hutzal asks if this verse may be intepreted as, "[He built] an Inner Sanctum in the Temple; and an inside [chamber] in which to place the Ark of the Covenant of HaSh-m." According to this reading, the Devir is *not* part of the Kodesh ha'Kodashim.

5a) [line 1] SE'ES - (a) [you will be] forgiven; (b) [you will] bear the burden [of your sin]
b) [line 1] SE'ES - HaSh-m said to Kayin, "Halo Im Teitiv *Se'es* v'Im Lo Setiv la'Pesach Chatas Rovetz." (Bereishis 4:7) - This verse may be translated as, "Surely, if you improve yourself you *will be forgiven*; but if you do not improve yourself, your sin will be guarded [and held against you on the Day of Judgement]." Alternatively, it may be read, "Surely, if you improve yourself [you will be forgiven]; you *will bear the burden* of your sin if you do not improve yourself. Your sin will be guarded [and held against you on the Day of Judgement]."

8) [line 17] B'DERECH (BEIS) KENISASO - in the way that he entered, i.e. facing the Aron. In order to accomplish this, he walked backwards

10) [line 23] TZINTZENES HA'MAN - the flask of Manna which Aharon put away to show future generations (Shemos 16:33)

11) [line 23] TZELOCHIS SHEMEN HA'MISHCHAH - the flask of oil prepared by Moshe Rabeinu that was used for anointing the Mishkan and its vessels, the Kohanim Gedolim and the kings of the House of David

12) [line 23] MAKLO SHEL AHARON - after the downfall of Korach and the destruction of his rebellion, HaSh-m commanded Moshe to place Aharon's staff before the Aron, together with the staffs of the princes of the other tribes of Yisrael. HaSh-m intended to make evident which person he chose as the High Priest. The staff of Aharon blossomed and grew almonds. It was kept as a reminder of the event for future generations, so that no one should again complain about or vie for the priesthood (Bamidbar 17:16-26).

13) [line 24] ARGAZ SHE'SHIGRU PELISHTIM DORON - the box that the Pelishtim sent as a gift to Benei Yisrael. At the end of the era of leadership of the Shofet Eli ha'Kohen, the Pelishtim waged war against Benei Yisrael. The Aron ha'Kodesh was taken out to the battlefield in order to sway the outcome of the war. However, due to certain sins of the people, the war effort of Benei Yisrael was unsuccessful, and the Pelishtim captured the Aron ha'Kodesh (Shemuel I 4:1-11). HaSh-m afflicted the Pelishtim with unusual diseases during the seven months in which they held the Aron. As a result, they decided to return the Aron, along with special gifts to the G-d of Yisrael. One of these gifts was an Argaz (box), which became a permanent addition to the Aron ha'Kodesh (Shemuel I 6:8). According to some opinions, the Sefer Torah was placed in the Argaz (see Bava Basra 14).
