Yoma 49
YOMA 49-50 (6 & 7 Adar) were dedicated by Harav Avi Feldman & family in
memory of his father, the Tzadik Harav Yisrael Azriel ben Harav Chaim

1) [line 1] ONEN (ANINUS - The Halachic status of a mourner immediately
after a close relative's death)
(a) A person is called an Onen mid'Oraisa on the day of death of one of his
seven closest relatives for whom he is required to arrange for burial (i.e.
father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter and wife). Chazal (Zevachim
101a) learn the Halachah of Aninus from the verse, "v'Achalti Chatas ha'Yom,
ha'Yitav b'Einei HaSh-m?" (Vayikra 10:19). Among the Halachos that apply to
an Onen is that a Kohen Onen is prohibited from doing the Avodah (divine
service) in the Beis ha'Mikdash unless he is the Kohen Gadol (Vayikra 10:7,
21:1-4). Moreover, an Onen (even the Kohen Gadol) may not eat Kodshim,
Terumah and Ma'aser Sheni.

2) [line 1] SHIKOR - a Kohen who has drunk a Revi'is of wine
*3*) [line 3] TIYUVTA - that is, the left hand may not be used and
disqualifies Avodah. It may only be used only in the case of the Kaf of Yom
Kipur, or when carrying the multiple Evarim to the ramp of the Mizbe'ach,
since there is no other way to carry those items (TOSFOS YESHANIM).
4) [line 3] V'HA RAV SHESHES HU D'OSVAH? - but Rav Sheshes himself asked
this Beraisa as a contradiction!? (and since he knew the Beraisa, how could
he say that Holachas ha'Dam is valid with the left hand?)
5) [line 4] AMOREI D'RAV CHISDA - the *Meturgeman* of Rav Chisda: (a) the
one who repeats in a loud voice the words of the Chacham, who whispers the

Hebrew* (RASHI Yoma 20b)

15a) [line 41] CHOFEN CHOZER V'CHOFEN - the Kohen Gadol scoops out two
handfuls of Ketores from the Machtah of Ketores (Mishnah 47a), places the
Ketores into a Kaf (a bowl with a handle) and afterwards, in the Kodesh
ha'Kodashim, he pours the Ketores from the Kaf *back* into his hands
b) [line 42] V'CHOFEN (CHAFINAH)
(a) Chafinah was one of the hardest Avodos done in the Beis ha'Mikdash (Yoma
47b, Menachos 11a). When the Kohen Gadol entered the Kodesh ha'Kodashim to
burn the special incense of Yom ha'Kipurim, he carried a Kaf (a bowl with a
handle) of Ketores and a pan of burning coals. He placed the pan of coals on
the floor, poured the Ketores from the Kaf into his palms and spread the
Ketores on the coals, as the verse specifies (Vayikra 16:12-13).
(b) In order to pour the Ketores into his palms, he needed to hold the bowl
of the Kaf in his fingertips, inching the handle upward with his thumbs
(that were on the underside of the Kaf) until he was able to grasp the
handle between his elbows. He then twisted the handle of the Kaf over with
his elbows, pouring the Ketores into his palms, being careful not to spill
any of it (Rashi). Alternatively, he held the upright Kaf in his fingertips
or teeth, sweeping the Ketores into his palms with his thumbs (Rambam
Hilchos Avodas Yom ha'Kipurim 4:1)

16) [line 1] HA'BAZACH - the Kaf (the bowl with a handle) that holds the
Ketores
17) [line 3] ATZILEI YADAV - his elbows
18) [line 4] TZOVRAH - he heaps it up
19) [line 17] NIMNIN (Designation of the people who will eat the Korban
Pesach)
(a) A lamb or goat that is slaughtered as a Korban Pesach may only be eaten
by individuals who are designated beforehand to eat from it. This is learned
from the verse in Shemos 12:4, "v'Im Yim'at ha'Bayis mi'Heyos mi'Seh
v'Lakach Hu u'Shecheno ha'Karov El Beiso b'Michsas Nefashos; Ish Lefi Ochlo
Tachosu Al ha'Seh." - "If the household is too small for a lamb, then he and
a close neighbor can obtain a lamb together, as long as it is for
specifically designated individuals. Individuals shall be designated for a
lamb according to how much each one will eat."
(b) People may be designated for or may withdraw their share from a Korban
Pesach as long as it has not been slaughtered.
20) [line 18] MI'CHIYUSEI D'SEH - while the lamb is still alive
21) [line 19] PODIN (PIDYON PETER CHAMOR)
There is a Mitzvah to redeem each firstborn male donkey, as the verse states
(Shmos 13:13), "v'Chol *Peter Chamor* Tifdeh b'Seh, v'Im Lo Sifdeh
va'Arafto." - "Every *firstborn donkey* must be redeemed with a sheep [that
is given to a Kohen]. If it is not redeemed, you must decapitate it."
22) [line 20] KOY - There is a Machlokes Tana'im (Chullin 80a) as to which
animal Chazal (Mishnah, Chullin 83b, etc.) identify as a "Koy." Usually the
term is used to refer to an animal that shows signs of being both a
domesticated animal (Behemah) and a wild animal (Chayah).
