Yoma 31

YOMA 31 - Dedicated to the memory of Moshe Simcha ben Dovid Z"L Rubner by his parents, Dovid and Zahava Rubner of Petach Tikva.

1) [line 1] CHOTZETZ - do the laws pertaining to intervening substances that disqualify immersion in a Mikvah apply to this Tevilah also?

2) [line 3] BI'AH B'MIKTZAS SHEMAH BI'AH - Does a person have to immerse in a Mikvah before entering the Azarah if only part of him enters the Azarah?

3a) [line 9] L'GAVAI - for someone entering the Azarah
b) [line 9] L'VARAI - for someone standing outside of the Azarah
4) [line 10] ASI L'IMSHUCHEI - he might inadvertently be drawn inside
5) [line 18] SHA'AR HA'MAYIM - TY #33 (the number in the diagram seems to be a mistake -- #33 should be in place of #34 on top of the gate); The Water Gate, opposite the Mizbe'ach, was opened only once during the year. The procession carrying the water for the Nisuch ha'Mayim passed through this gate on Sukos. The stream called the Amah, that passed through the Azarah, flowed out through this gate. When necessary, the Amah was blocked, causing it to overflow and cleanse the Azarah floor.

6) [line 19] EIN EITAM - (a) the spring of Eitam, in the area of Solomon's pools to the south of Beis Lechem. The aqueducts that brought water from Ein Eitam to Yeurashalyim were used until the early 1900's and can still be seen today by arranging a tour with the Zusmans (972-2-652-4934). (Rashi says that it is possible that Ein Eitam is Mei Nafto'ach, Lifta, to the north of Givat Shaul, near the entrance to Yerushalayim. However, Eitam is mentioned among the cities that are located to the south of Yerushalayim in Divrei ha'Yamim II 11:6.) (b) according to the Girsa SHEN OTAM - a receptacle for water hollowed out of the marble at the top of the Sha'ar ha'Mayim, that resembles the shape of a tooth (Shen) and was watertight (Atum - sealed) (RABEINU ELYAKIM)

31b---------------------------------------31b

7) [line 1] TIKRAH - ceiling
8) [line 1] MA'AZIVAH - a mixture of mud and sand or stone chips, etc., that covers a ceiling and serves as a floor for the upper story (in this case as a floor for the Mikvah)

9) [line 2] SHISHA - alt. SHAISHA - [smooth] yellow marble or alabaster
10) [line 9] NISTAPEG - he wiped himself dry with a towel
11) [line 10] KERATZO - (lit. he cut it) he slaughtered the Korban Tamid by cutting the majority of the trachea and esophagus, which is the minimum amount required

12a) [line 11] MEIREK ACHER SHECHITAH - a different Kohen finished the Shechitah
b) [line 11] AL YADO - for him; alt. near him
13) [line 17] ISTENIS - fastidious, squeamish, dainty
14) [line 17] MECHAMIN LO CHAMIN - the Kohanim heated up water for him on Erev Yom ha'Kipurim

15) [line 18] TAFIG TZINASAN - to reduce the chill
16) [line 20] TEREI KIDUSHEI A'LEVISHAH AVID - the two times that the Kohen Gadol does Kidush Yadayim v'Raglayim (washes his hands and feet) for each Avodah are both done for the sake of the clothes into which he is about to change (rather than one for the Peshitah (removal) of the clothes that he is wearing and one for the Levishah (donning) of the next set of clothes) - see the Mishnah on 34b. Rebbi Meir rules that the Kohen Gadol does Kidush Yadayim v'Raglayim *after* he removes the clothes that he is wearing and *after* he dons the next set of clothes.
