1) A PERSON'S ALLOTTED LIFESPAN
(a) (Beraisa - R. Akiva): I will fulfill the number of your
days - these are the years apportioned to a person when
he is born; if he merits, they are fulfilled; if not,
they are reduced;
(b) Chachamim say, if he merits, they are increased; if not,
they are reduced;
1. Question (Chachamim): It says, "I will add 15 years
to your days"!
2. Answer (R. Akiva): The years added were allotted to
him from before.
i. This must be so, for it was prophesized, "A son
will be born to the house of David, Yoshiyahu"
- and Menashe (from whom Yoshiyahu descended)
was born during Chizkiyahu's 15 'extra' years!
3. Rejection (Chachamim): This is no proof - the verse
says he will be born to the house of David, but it
did not specify that he will be from Chizkiyahu!
(c) (Mishnah): If his wife died ... if his Yevamah died ...
(he may marry her sister).
(d) (Rav Yosef): This Mishnah is not needed.

2) ACQUISITIONS AND DISQUALIFICATION OF YEVAMOS
(a) (Mishnah): R. Gamliel says, a 2nd Get does not take
effect once 1 Get was given to a Yevamah; nor does a
Ma'amar take effect after a Ma'amar; nor does relations
take effect after relations, nor Chalitzah after
Chalitzah;
(b) Chachamim say, a Get does take effect after a Get, a
Ma'amar does take effect after a Ma'amar; but nothing
takes effect after relations or Chalitzah;
(c) If a Yavam gave a Ma'amar to his Yevamah, then a Get -
she needs Chalitzah;
(d) If he gave a Ma'amar then did Chalitzah - she needs a
Get;
(e) If he gave a Ma'amar and had relations - this is proper
fulfillment of the Mitzvah;
(f) If he gave a Get and then a Ma'amar - she needs a Get and
Chalitzah;
(g) If he gave a Get and had relations - she needs a Get and
Chalitzah;
(h) If he gave a Get and then Chalitzah - nothing is needed
after Chalitzah;
(i) If he did Chalitzah, then gave a Ma'amar or a Get or had
relations; or, if he had relations, then gave a Ma'amar
or a Get or did Chalitzah - nothing takes effect after
Chalitzah;

3) 2 YEVAMOS AND 1 YAVAM
(a) This applies when there is 1 Yavam and 1 Yevamah, or 2
Yevamos and 1 Yavam;
(b) If he gave a Ma'amar to 1 Yevamah, and a Ma'amar to the
other - each needs a Get, and Chalitzah must be done;
(c) If he gave a Ma'amar to 1 Yevamah, and a Get to the other
- the former needs a Get and Chalitzah;
(d) If he gave a Ma'amar to 1 Yevamah, and had relations with
the other - each needs a Get, and Chalitzah must be done;
(e) If he gave a Ma'amar to 1 Yevamah, and Chalitzah to the
other - the former needs a Get;
(f) If he gave a Get to each - they need Chalitzah;
(g) If he gave a Get to 1, and had relations with the other -
the latter needs a Get and Chalitzah;
(h) If he gave a Get to 1, and a Ma'amar to the other - the
latter needs a Get and Chalitzah;
(i) If he gave a Get to 1, and Chalitzah to the other -
nothing takes effect after Chalitzah;
(j) If he did Chalitzah to both, or did Chalitzah and gave a
Ma'amar or a Get or had relations;
(k) Or, if he had relations with both, or had relations and
gave a Ma'amar or a Get or did Chalitzah - nothing takes
effect after Chalitzah;
(l) This applies to 1 Yavam and 2 Yevamos, or 2 Yavamim and 1
Yevamah;
(m) If he did Chalitzah and gave a Ma'amar or a Get or had
relations;
(n) Or, if he had relations and gave a Ma'amar or a Get or
did Chalitzah - nothing takes effect after Chalitzah;
1. This is true whether the Chalitzah was at the
beginning, in the middle or at the end;
2. When relations are at the beginning, nothing takes
effect after them; if relations are in the middle or
at the end, things do take effect after them;
3. R. Nechemyah says, relations and Chalitzah are
similar - whether they come at the beginning, in the
middle or at the end, nothing takes effect after
them.
4) WHY GET AND MA'AMAR WERE ENACTED
(a) (Gemara): The only argument is by a Get after a Get, or a
Ma'amar after a Ma'amar - but all agree that a single Get
or Ma'amar takes effect by a Yevamah.
(b) Question: Why was Get enacted?
(c) Answer: A Get permits a married woman; Chalitzah also
permits a woman. If people see that Get does not work by
a Yevamah, they will think that Chalitzah does not work
either, and will come to do Yibum after Chalitzah.
(d) Question: Why was Ma'amar enacted?
(e) Answer: Ma'amar (i.e. giving money or a document to make
engagement) acquires a single woman; relations also
acquire. If people see that Ma'amar does not acquire a
Yevamah, they will think that relations do not acquire
either, and will come to do Yibum after Yibum.
(f) Question: Why did Chachamim say that things take effect
after improper relations (i.e. a forbidden Yibum)?
(g) Answer: This was said by Yibum after a Get - as a decree
on account of Yibum after Chalitzah;
1. Answer: This was said by Yibum after a Ma'amar - as
a decree on account of Yibum after Yibum.
(h) Question: Why did Chachamim say that nothing takes effect
after an improper Chalitzah (i.e. it was forbidden to do
Yibum)?
(i) Counter-question: Why should we decree?
1. Suggestion #1: If we should decree Chalitzah after a
Get on account of Chalitzah after Chalitzah - let
them go do extra Chalitzos!
2. Suggestion #2: If we should decree Chalitzah after a
Ma'amar on account of Chalitzah after Yibum - when
Chalitzah is done after Ma'amar, a Get is required
for the Ma'amar!
i. Also when Chalitzah is done after Yibum, a Get
is required for the Yibum!
