Ta'anis 17

TA'ANIS 17, 18, 19 - Ari Kornfeld has generously sponsored the Dafyomi publications for these Dafim for the benefit of Klal Yisrael

*1*) [line 1] UVE'SHE'AS MILCHAMAH - (Zichronos and Shofros are said not only in times of war, but when praying because of any other adversity aside from lack of rain -- RITVA and RAN, although RASHI dh ve'She'as might disagree)

*2*) [line 10] YONAH BASAR DAVID U'SHLOMO HAVAH - (Yonah is not the only one who belongs after David and Shlomo; Eliyahu does as well -- see MAHARSHA. The Gemara's answer correctly answers this question as well.)

3) [line 22] V'YODE'A SHE'BATEI AVOSAV KEVU'IN SHAM - (a) he knows that his Beis Av had a fixed day to work in the Beis ha'Mikdash; (b) he knows that his Beis Av was allowed to work in the Beis ha'Mikdash. At the time of Ezra only Kohanim who could prove their lineage were accepted to do the Avodah in the Beis ha'Mikdash.

4) [line 27] SHE'TAKANASO, KALKALASO - (a) (lit. his benefit stems from his destruction) the fact that the Beis ha'Mikdash has not been rebuilt for all of these years has been the reason that the Kohanim are permitted to drink wine. With regard to this Halachah, we do not consider the possibility that it will be rebuilt (RASHI); (b) since he does not know to which Beis Av he belongs, he is permitted to drink wine. Even if the Beis ha'Mikdash were to be rebuilt today, he will not do the Avodah until a Beis Din of Kohanim convenes to fix the individual days of the Divine service (RABEINU CHANANEL); (c) if the Beis ha'Mikdash were standing, a Kohen who does not know to which Beis Av he belongs (but does know that his Beis Av *did* work in the Beis ha'Mikdash) would be forbidden to drink wine. Since the Beis ha'Mikdash is destroyed he may drink wine (RABBEINU GERSHOM)

5) [line 30] MENUVALIN - ugly, unsightly
6) [line 38] LO LIRBU KELAL - they should not grow their hair at all (even for thirty days; rather, they should cut it on the 29th day); see Insights

17b---------------------------------------17b

7) [line 4] D'GANI PURSA V'AYIL - that he will sleep a little and then go into the Beis ha'Mikdash

8) [line 6] DERECH MIL - walking a distance of one Mil 1 Mil = 2000 Amos = approximately 960 or 1152 meters, depending upon the differing Halachic opinions

9) [line 6] MEFIGIN ES HA'YAYIN - weaken and remove the effect of the wine
10) [line 10] MATRIDASO - confounds him
11) [line 11] D'MECHALEI AVODAH - who invalidate (lit. profane) the Avodah that they perform; i.e. that cause the Korban to be Pasul

12) [line 30] GEMARA GEMIRI LAH - we know it from the tradition that Moshe received on Mount Sinai (Halachah l'Moshe mi'Sinai)

13) [line 38] ITOKAM TEMIDA - the Korban Tamid was established; i.e. the Tzedukim (the heretical followers of Tzadok) claimed that an individual could bring a Korban Tamid and their assertion was disproved

14) [line 38] ITOSAV CHAGA D'SHAVU'AYA - the [argument regarding the] festival of Shavu'os was settled; i.e. the Baisusim (the heretical followers of Baisus) claimed that Shavu'os must always fall on a Sunday and their assertion was disproved
