Sukah 48

SUKA 36-56 (End of Maseches) have been dedicated by the wife and daughters of the late Dr. Simcha Bekelnitzky (Simcha Gedalya ben Shraga Feibush) of Queens N.Y. Well known in the community for his Chesed and Tzedakah, he will long be remembered.

1)

(a) What do we learn from the Pasuk in Re'ei "Vehayisa *Ach* Same'ach"?

(b) Is the *day* of Shemini Atzeres also included in Simchah?

(c) How does one fulfill this Mitzvah, seeing as one cannot Shecht Kodshim by night?

(d) Is the first night of Yom-Tov also included in the Mitzvah of Simchah? How do we know that all the other nights are included in Simchah?

2) Why do we prefer to include the *last* night in the Mitzvah of Simchah rather than the *first*?

3)

(a) May one dismantle the Sukah after one's main meal on the seventh day?

(b) How does one move from the Sukah into the house in honor of Shemini Atzeres?

(c) What is the problem if, for some reason, he has no house into which to move on Shemini Atzeres?

4)
(a) There are two ways of solving the above problem: if it is a small Sukah, he can light a lamp there.
What is the second option?

(b) What does the Gemara mean when it says that the two answers are complementary; that one speaks to the B'nei Eretz Yisrael, and the other, to the B'nei Bavel?

(c) A lamp does not invalidate a large Sukah. What alternative does he have?

5)
(a) Where was the spring of Shilo'ach?

(b) What did they use to collect the water for the Simchas Beis ha'Sho'evah?

(c) What is the significance of the three Lugin that the jar contained (why three Lugin)?

(d) Which Halachahe do we derive from the Pasuk in Yeshayah "u'She'avtem Mayim be'Sason"?

6)
(a) When the Kohen performing the Nisuch ha'Mayim reached the top of the Mizbe'ach with the jar of water, did he turn left or right?

(b) According to the Tana Kama, there were two silver basins beside the south-western Keren, and there was a hole in the middle of each bowl. The Kohen poured the water (for the Nisuch ha'Mayim) into the western bowl. What did he pour into the eastern one?

(c) Which one of the holes was slightly larger than the other? Why was that?

(d) Would the Kohen be Yotze if he poured the water into the eastern bowl and the wine into the western one?

Answers to questions

48b---------------------------------------48b

7)

(a) Rebbi Yehudah argues with the Tana Kama in two points.
What does he say with regard to ...
1. ... the two basins? What were they made of, and what made people think that they were made of silver?
2. ... the pouring ceremony? How much water did the jar contain, and for for how many days did they perform the ceremony?
(b) Why was it necessary to tell the Kohen who was pouring the water, to raise his hands?

(c) In what small way did the ceremony differ on Shabbos than during the week?

(d) What was significant about the golden barrel that they used for this purpose?

8)
(a) If the water spilt or was left uncovered, they would take water from the Kiyor.
Why can water (or wine) that was left uncovered not be brought on the Mizbe'ach?

(b) Why did the water in the Kiyor not become Pasul be'Linah (seeing as it had remained in a K'li Shares until morning, when Kodshim normally became Pasul)?

9)
(a) There were two Minim (heretics).
Why did ...
  1. ... Sason quote the Pasuk in Yeshayah "Sason ve'Simchah Yasigu"?
  2. ... Simchah quote the Pasuk in Esther "Simchah ve'Sason la'Yehudim"?
(b) What did Simchah reply, when Sason (quoting the Pasuk in Yeshayah "Ki ve'Simchah Seitzei'u") informed him that one day, he would be relegated to become a mere emissary?

(c) What did Sason the Min (quoting the Pasuk "u'She'avtem Mayim be'Sason") boast to Rebbi Avahu?

(d) What did Rebbi Avahu answer him?

10)
(a) The Kohanim would always turn right at the top of the Mizbe'ach (even if it meant going all the way round to do whatever they needed to do. There were only three exceptions to the rule. One of them was Nisuch ha'Mayim (as we learned in our Mishnah), and the second, Nisuch ha'Yayin.
Why did these two not follow the normal pattern?

(b) What was the third exception? Why did they turn left there instead of right?

11)
(a) According to Rebbi Yehudah, the basins were really made of lime, and it was the wine that gave them the dark appearance. That is fine with the *eastern* basin, into which they poured *wine*, but why would the *western* basin, into which they poured *water*, become silverish?

(b) How many Lugin of wine were brought together with the Korban Tamid?

(c) According to the Tana Kama (the Rabbanan), the Nisuch ha'Mayim too, comprised *three* Lugin of water. Does this mean that the author of our Mishnah, which prescribes a larger hole for the wine, is Rebbi Yehudah, who gives the Shiur for Nisuch ha'Mayim as *one* Lug? Or could it nevertheless be the Rabbanan?

(d) How do we go on to prove that the author of the Mishnah is the Tana Kama, from the Lashon of the Mishnah 'Echad Me'uveh, ve'Echad Dak'?

12)
(a) What happened when that that Tzedoki poured the water for Nisuch ha'Mayim at his feet?

(b) What did they use to block the hole in the Mizbe'ach?

(c) Did that render the Mizbe'ach Kasher?

(d) On what grounds was the Mizbe'ach Pasul?
