Sukah 20

SUKAH 20 - Dedicated by Marsha and Lee Weinblatt of N.J., in honor of the 5th of Iyar

1)

(a) According to Rava's current interpretation of the Machlokes between the Tana Kama and Rebbi Eliezer, they both agree that a *large* mat is normally meant for S'chach, and they argue by a *small* one: The Tana Kama holds that a Stam small mat is subject to Tum'ah and is Pasul for S'chach; whereas Rebbi Eliezer maintains that both a *small mat and a large one* are Kasher for S'chach.
Besides a tradition that their dispute concerns a large mat and that Rebbi Eliezer is le'Chumra, what problem does the Gemara have with the Lashon of Rebbi Eliezer?

(b) So how does Rav Papa finally establish the Machlokes? How does he learn the 'Ase'ah li'Shechivah' of Rebbi Eliezer?

2)
(a) According to the the Tana Kama of the Beraisa, why are *large* mats made of various types of rushes ...
  1. ... Kasher for S'chach when they are hand-platted (see Maharam)?
  2. ... Pasul when they are woven?
(b) What will be the Din by *small* rush mats that are hand-platted?

(c) Small *reed* mats are Kasher when they are hand-platted.
Why are they more lenient than *rush* mats?

(d) What do Rebbi Yossi and Rebbi Dosa say about small *reed* mats (See Tosfos DH 'Shel Shifa')?

3)
(a) Rebbi Dosa (in another Beraisa) declares 'Chotzlos' Tamei Meis.
Why does he specifically mention 'Tamei Meis'?

(b) The Chachamim say that they are subject to becooming Tamei Medras.
Do they mean 'Medras' and not 'Meis'?

(c) Rav Avdimi bar Hamduri translates 'Chotzlos' as the leather satchels of shepherds.
How does Resh Lakish translate it?

4)
(a) Which three leaders (each in his own day and age) came from Bavel to reinstate Torah in Eretz Yisrael?

(b) What did Resh Lakish mean when he said about Rebbi Chiya 'Hareini Kaparas Rebbi Chiya u'Vanav'?

(c) What did Rebbi Chiya say about ...

  1. ... the reed mats of Usha?
  2. ... the reed mats of Teverya?
(d) The reed mats used in other towns, he claimed, were the subject of the dispute between Rebbi Dosa (who declares them Tamei Meis) and the Chachamim (who declare them Tamei Medras) - quoted above in 3.
What is the basis of their Machlokes?

5) By which type of reed mats does Rebbi Dosa (who just declared reed mats subject to Tum'ah) agree with Rebbi Yossi (see 2d) - that they are not subject to Tum'ah, and are therefore Kasher to be used as S'chach?

6)

(a) In another Beraisa, Rebbi Dosa declares Chotzlos made of rushes, sack- cloth or horse-hair Tamei Meis.
What do the Rabbanan say?

(b) According to Rav Avdimi bar Hamduri (in 2d, who translated 'Chotzlos' as the leather satchels of shepherds), one might use a satchel made of rushes for large fruit, and one made of sack-cloth or horse-hair for legumes and smaller fruit.
Why the difference?

(c) According to Resh Lakish (who translated 'Chotzlos' as 'mats'), apart from sleeping on them (for which purpose, according to Rebbi Dosa, they are not made), to what use or uses would one put mats made of ...

  1. ... sack-cloth or horse-hair?
  2. ... rushes?
7)
(a) When Rebbi Chananya went to Bavel to declare a leap-year, what did that old man tell him?

(b) Did Rebbi Yehoshua agree with the old man? What relation was Rebbi Yehoshua to Rebbi Chananya?

(c) What condition did Rav Chisda attach to this ruling?

(d) Were the mats of the B'nei Mechuza eligible for S'chach?

8)
(a) Is there a Mitzvah to sleep in the Sukah?

(b) The Tana Kama forbids sleeping underneath a bed in the Sukah.
Why does Rebbi Yehudah permit it?

(c) What does the Tana Kama hold?

(d) How high must the bed be for the Tana Kama to forbid it?

9)
(a) What did Tavi, Raban Gamliel's slave, once do? What did Raban Gamliel subsequently boast to the elders?

(b) What can we learn from Raban Gamliel's statement?

10)
(a) The Mishnah in Ohalos speaks about a hole that the water or rodents bored into the lower section of the banks of a river or, if the earth crumbled by itself, leaving a large cavity in the lower part of a rock, or an earth wall or a pile of stones or of beams where some of them form an Ohel over others.
What does the Tana Kama say about them?

(b) Why does Rebbi Yehudah not give them a Din Ohel?
