Sukah 18
1)
(a) Will the Sukah be Kasher if, in a *large* Sukah, one fills in part of a
space of three Tefachim in the S'chach, with metal rods?
(b) Why would the Din be different if one did the same thing in a *small*
Sukah?
(c) If one filled in part of the space with canes, the Sukah is Kasher,
because of the principle of 'Levud'. That is when it is *next to the wall*.
Rav Acha and Ravina argue over a space of less than three Tefachim in the
*middle* of the Sukah. According to one of them, the leniency in the former
case only applies to the *side* of the Sukah, but not to the *middle*. Why
is that?
(d) Ravina (whom we know traditionally to be the one who is lenient whenever
he and Rav Acha have a dispute in this way) brings a proof that 'Levud'
applies even in the middle of the S'chach (or of a wall) from the Koreh of a
Mavoy, where we validate two beams that protrude from the two parallel walls
at the entrance of a Mavoy, which stop within three Tefachim of each other -
because of 'Levud'. How does Rav Acha refute this proof?
2)
(a) If a room has a Tefach by Tefach skylight, what will be the Din
concerning Tum'ah regarding an object that is ...
- ... directly underneath the skylight, if there is a piece of corpse in the room?
- ... in the room, if the piece of corpse is directly underneath the skylight?
(b) How will Ravina refute the proof from here that Levud does not apply in
the *middle* of a wall or ceiling?
(c) Why is this not a Binyan Av for the entire Torah (that we say 'Ein Levud
be'Emtza')?
3)
What did Rebbi Yishmael b'Rebbi Yossi inform Rebbi Yehudah (in the name of
his father), when he validated ...
- ... a Sukah with Pasul walls - provided there is at least seven by seven Tefachim of Kasher S'chach in the middle?
- ... a type of small fish called Abruma? What was the problem with these fish?
4)
(a) Similarly, Abaye permitted a type of small fish called Tzachnasa from
the River Bav. Why did we initially think that this is because the River
Bav was a swift-flowing river?
(b) And why, in fact, is this not the reason?
(c) What other reason might there be to permit it?
(d) That reason too, we reject on the same basis as we did the first one.
What then, *is* the reason for permitting Tzachnasa from the River Bav? What
prohibition are we concerned with?
5)
Ravina concludes that, nowadays, fish from the River Bav are forbidden.
Why is that?

6)
(a) If S'chach is placed on top of a courtyard that is separated from the
adjoining passageway (which is more than four Amos wide) by posts that are
placed at intervals of less than three Tefachim apart, will the courtyard
serve as a Kasher Sukah?
(b) Abaye validates it even if there are no posts. Why?
(c) What does Rava say?
(d) Why does Abaye concede that by a Sukah that has only two walls and
S'chach consisting of planks of less than four Tefachim wide 'Pi Tikrah
Yored ve'Sosem' is not applicable?
7)
(a) Rav permits carrying on Shabbos even more than four Amos inside an
Achsadra in a field that is not attached to a house. On what grounds does
he permit it, and why does Shmuel disagree?
(b) What do we initially suggest vis-a-vis the Machlokes between Abaye and
Rava that we just learned?
(c) We conclude however, that this is not the case. Even Abaye has to agree
that only Rav will agree with him, but not Shmuel. Why can we not
establish Shmuel by Shabbos exclusively, but by Sukah, he will agree that
'Pi Tikrah Yored ve'Sosem'?
(d) How does Rava establish that even Rav (who holds by Achsadra be'Bik'ah:
'Pi Tikrah Yored ve'Sosem') will hold like he holds in the case of Sukah?
