1) A WOMAN OF ILL REPUTE
(a) (Shmuel): It is better to marry a woman of ill repute
than to marry her daughter.
1. (One can know that) the woman comes from proper
parents; her daughter may come from a Nochri or
Mamzer.
(b) (R. Yochanan): It is better to marry her daughter than
the woman (of ill repute).
1. (Provided that) the daughter acts properly - but the
mother is acting improperly.
(c) Question (against R. Yochanan - Beraisa): One may marry
a woman of ill repute.
1. Counter-question (Rava): Obviously, this is wrong -
one should not marry her Lechatchilah!
2. Answer: Rather, it should say, if he married her, he
may remain married.
(d) Answer: Since the Beraisa must be altered, we can alter
it to say that one may marry the daughter of a woman of
ill repute.
(e) The law is, it is better to marry her daughter than the
woman (of ill repute).
1. (Rav Tachlifa bar Ma'arava): A married woman that
has relations with others, her children are Kesherim
- we may assume most of her relations were with her
husband.
(f) Question (Rav Amram): What if she is exceedingly
licentious?
1. According to the opinion that a woman usually
becomes pregnant the day before she was due to
menstruate, clearly, her children are forbidden
(they are probably from another man).
2. The question is according to the opinion that a
woman usually becomes pregnant the day after
immersing (from after being a Nidah).
i. Do we say, her husband guards her that day, to
ensure that she will not become pregnant from
another man?
ii. Or, since she is so licentious, he cannot guard
her?
(g) This question is unresolved.
2) BEIS DIN CAN WARN
(a) (Mishnah): Beis Din warns ...
(b) (Beraisa): "A man, a man" - this teaches that Beis Din
warns the wife of a deaf man, lunatic or bewildered man,
or a man that went overseas or is imprisoned;
(c) If she is secluded, she (becomes forbidden and) forfeits
her Kesuvah, but she cannot drink - "The man will bring
his wife";
1. R. Yosi says, he can make her drink when he returns.
(d) Question: On what do they argue?
(e) Answer: Chachamim hold, we require "He will warn ... (the
same) he will bring (to drink): R. Yosi does not require
this.
(f) (Beraisa): A woman that will stray under her husband -
this equates the wife to the husband, and the husband to
the wife.
(g) Question: What do we learn from this?
(h) Answer #1 (Rav Sheshes): Just as a blind man's wife does
not drink - "It was hidden from her husband's eyes" -
also, if she is blind, she does not drink.
(i) Answer #2 (Rav Ashi): Just as a lame woman or a woman
without hands does not drink - "He will stand the woman
in front of Hash-m and put (the Minchah) on her hands" -
also, the wife of a lame or handless man does not drink;
27b---------------------------------------27b
(j) Answer #3 (Mar bar Rav Ashi): Just as a mute woman does
not drink - "The woman says Amen, Amen" - the wife of a
mute man does not drink.

3) THE ADULTERER IS ALSO PUNISHED
(a) (Mishnah): Just as the water checks her, it also checks
him - "(The water) will come, will come".
(b) R. Akiva says, just as she is forbidden to her husband
(until she drinks), she is forbidden to the suspected
adulterer - "She was defiled; and she was defiled";
1. R. Yehoshua: Zecharyah ben ha'Katzav also expounded
thusly;
2. Rebbi says, it says "She was defiled" twice; this
teaches, she is (permanently) forbidden to her
husband and to the suspected adulterer.
4) LAWS TAUGHT ON THE SPECIAL DAY
(a) (Continuation of Mishnah): On that day (when R. Eliezer
ben Azaryah became Nasi, and all were permitted to enter
the Beis Midrash) R. Akiva taught: "Any earthenware
vessel that (a rodent) will fall into, any food in the
vessel Yitma (will become Tamei)" - the Torah chose the
word Yitma, for this can be read Yitamei (will impart
Tum'ah);
1. This teaches that a loaf which is 2nd degree Tamei
(i.e. it was touched by a 1st degree Tum'ah
(something which touched a source of Tum'ah)) makes
other foods 3rd degree Tamei.
2. R. Yishmael: R. Yochanan ben Zakai was concerned
that later generations would say that there is no
3rd degree of Tum'ah (i.e. what a 2nd degree Tum'ah
touches remains Tahor), for we have no verse
teaching this; R. Akiva, his Talmid, found a verse!
(b) On that day, R. Akiva taught: "You will measure 2000 Amos
outside the city, to the east..."; another verse
contradicts this - "1000 Amos from the wall of the city"!
1. The resolution - 1000 Amos is left vacant; 2000 Amos
is the boundary within which one is allowed to walk
on Shabbos;
2. R. Eliezer, son of R. Yosi ha'Galili says, 1000 Amos
is left vacant; the second 1000 Amos are for fields
and vineyards.
(c) On that day, R. Akiva taught: "Then Moshe and Benei
Yisrael (sang) ... and they said, saying" - the word
"Saying" is extra!
1. It teaches, after Moshe sang each segment, Benei
Yisrael answered, just as a congregation answers
when the Chazan sings Hallel;
2. R. Nechemyah says, as a congregation answers Shema
Yisrael, not as Hallel.
(d) On that day, R. Yehoshua ben Hurkenus taught: Iyov served
Hash-m out of love - "If Hash-m would kill me, Lo (to
him) I will hope";
1. This is not a proof - perhaps we understand the word
Lo to mean, 'not'!
2. "Until I expire, my purity will not veer from me" -
this teaches that he served from love.
3. R. Yehoshua: R. Yochanan ben Zakai always taught
that Iyov served from fear - "A pure man, straight,
G-d fearing, that veers from evil" - his Talmid
taught that he served from love!
(e) (Gemara) Question: The Mishnah says, the water also
checks him - to whom does this refer?
1. Suggestion: If it means, her husband - what did he
do wrong, that he should be punished?
