Sotah 14
SOTAH 14 - L"iluy Nishmas Rachel bas Moshe Potack, a woman of valor who was
a source of inspiration to all who met her. She will be sorely missed by all
those who were Zocheh to be touched by her presence. (Dedicated anonymously)

1) MOSHE'S BURIAL SITE
(a) The Romans asked the rulers of Beis Pe'or to show them
Moshe's burial site. When they stood on the high place,
it appeared to be below; when they stood below, it
appeared to be above.
1. They split into 2 groups. To the ones above, it
seemed to be below; to the ones below, it seemed to
be above.
i. This fulfilled "No man knew the place of his
burial".
(b) (R. Chama b'Rebbi Chanina): Even Moshe does not know the
place of his burial - it says, "No man knew...", and
Moshe is referred to "The man of Hash-m".
(c) Question (R. Chama b'Rebbi Chanina): Why was Moshe buried
by Beis Pe'or?
(d) Answer (R. Chama b'Rebbi Chanina): To be an atonement for
Yisrael's sin with Pe'or.
(e) Question (R. Chama b'Rebbi Chanina): How can one fulfill
"You will go after Hash-m" - "Hash-m is a consuming
fire"!
(f) Answer (R. Chama b'Rebbi Chanina): You go in Hash-m's
ways.
1. Hash-m clothes the naked - "Hash-m made for Adam and
his wife tunics of skin and clothed them" - you
should also clothe the naked!
2. Hash-m visits the sick - "Hash-m appeared to him in
Alonei Mamre" - you should also!
3. Hash-m consoles mourners - "After Avraham died,
Hash-m blessed Yitzchak" - you should also!
4. Hash-m buries the dead - "He buried him in the
valley" - you should also!
5. (Rav or Shmuel): "Tunics of skin" - something which
is made from skin;
6. (The other of Rav and Shmuel): Something the skin
benefits from.
7. (R. Simla'i): The beginning and end of Torah is
bestowing Chesed.
i. The beginning - "Hash-m made for Adam and his
wife tunics of skin and clothed them."
ii. The end - "He buried him in the valley."
(g) Rhetorical question (R. Simla'i): Why did Moshe want to
enter Eretz Yisrael - to eat the fruit, or to be satiated
from its bounty?!
(h) Answer: Rather, to fulfill the many Mitzvos which only
apply in Eretz Yisrael.
1. Hash-m: You want to receive the reward - I credit
you as if you fulfilled them - "Therefore I
apportion to him with the great, and with the
awesome he will share the spoils, since he poured
out his soul to die, and with sinners he is counted,
and he bore the sin of the many, and for the sinners
he Mafgi'a (requests)."
2. "Therefore I apportion to him among the great" - one
might have thought, as the later Tzadikim, not as
the early ones - "And with the awesome he will share
the spoils", with Avraham, Yitzchak and Yakov, who
were awesome in Torah and Mitzvos.
3. "Since he poured out his soul to die" - he gave
himself over to die - "If (you will not forgive
them), blot me out".
4. "With sinners he is counted" - he is counted among
those that died in the wilderness.
5. "He bore the sin of the many" - He atoned for the
sin of the golden calf.
6. "For the sinners he requests" - he requested mercy
for the sinners of Yisrael, that they should repent.
i. Mafgia is a language of prayer - "Do not pray
for the nation ... do not TiFGA me".

2) THE OFFERING OF A SOTAH
(a) (Mishnah): The husband would bring her Minchah in a
basket made of palm twigs; he put it in her hands, to
weary her.
(b) All other Menachos (flour-offerings) are in a service
vessel from the beginning until the end; this one starts
in a basket of palm branches and ends in a service
vessel.
(c) All other Menachos require oil and frankincense; this one
requires neither.
(d) All other Menachos come from wheat; this one comes from
barley.
1. The Minchah of the Omer (the communal flour-offering
of the 2nd day of Pesach), even though it comes from
barley, comes finely sifted; this comes as mixed
flour.
(e) R. Gamliel says, just as her actions are those of an
animal, also her offering is animal food.
(f) (Gemara - Beraisa - Aba Chanan): (The offering is put in
her hands) to weary her, so she will confess.
1. If the Torah is so concerned for transgressors - all
the more so, for those that do Hash-m's will!
(g) Question: How do we know that the Torah is concerned for
her - perhaps the concern is that Hash-m's name should
not be erased!
14b---------------------------------------14b
(h) Answer: He holds, she drinks before offering the
sacrifice.
1. If the concern was to avoid erasing Hash-m's name -
we would not weary her after it has been erased!
(i) (Mishnah): All Menachos ...
(j) Contradiction (Beraisa): The procedure of a Minchah: a
man brings the offering from his house in a silver or
gold basket, and puts it in a service vessel, and
sanctifies it in a service vessel;
1. He puts its oil and frankincense on it, and brings
it to the Kohen; the Kohen takes it to the altar,
and brings it close to the southwest corner, at the
edge; this suffices.
2. He removes the frankincense to 1 side, and takes a
Kometz (the amount that fits in his 3 middle fingers
when curled into his palm) from a place where the
oil was absorbed well; he puts the Kometz in a
service vessel, and sanctifies it in a service
vessel;
3. He takes the frankincense and puts it on the Kometz;
he takes it up and burns it in a service vessel, he
salts it and puts it on the fire;
4. After the Kometz is offered, the remainder of the
Minchah may be eaten; the Kohanim may mix it with
wine, oil, and honey; the only prohibition is to
ferment it (make it Chametz).
(k) (Summation of contradiction): The Beraisa says that he
takes the offering from his house in a silver or gold
basket (not a service vessel)!
(l) Answer (Rav Papa): The Mishnah means, other Menachos
begin in a vessel fitting to be a service vessel.
1. We infer, a basket of palm branches is unfit to be a
service vessel.
(m) Suggestion: The Mishnah is not as R. Yosi b'Rebbi
Yehudah.
1. (Rebbi): A service vessel made of wood is invalid;
R. Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah permits this.
(n) Rejection: The Mishnah is even as R. Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah
- he only allows wooden vessels of quality.
1. R. Yosi b'Rebbi Yehudah certainly agrees, "Offer
this to your governor" (something unacceptable to
offer to an official may not be offered to Hash-m)!
3) OTHER MENACHOS
(a) (Beraisa): He puts it in a service vessel, and sanctifies
it in a service vessel.
1. Suggestion: We learn, a service vessel only
sanctifies its contents when they are put in it with
that intention.
2. Rejection: No - the Beraisa means, he puts it a
service vessel, so it (automatically) becomes
sanctified in the service vessel.
(b) (Beraisa): He puts its oil and frankincense on it and
brings it to the Kohen; the Kohen takes it to the altar.
1. The Torah explicitly says so.
(c) (Beraisa): He brings it close to the southwest corner, at
the edge; this suffices.
(d) Question: What is the source for this?
(e) Answer: "... the Kohanim will offer it in front of
Hash-m, to the face of the altar."
1. (Beraisa): "In front of Hash-m" - one might have
thought, on the west side - the Torah says, "to the
face of the altar";
2. If "to the face of the altar", one might have
thought, on the south side - the Torah says, "in
front of Hash-m";
i. The resolution is, he brings it close to the
southwest corner, at the edge; this suffices;
3. R. Elazar says, one might have thought, he may bring
it close to the west side of the corner, or to the
south side of the corner - this is not so;
i. Whenever there are 2 verses, if we fulfill the
1st, we can also fulfill the 2nd; but
fulfilling the 2nd will not allow fulfilling
the 1st - we fulfill the 1st, so we can also
fulfill the 2nd.
4. If we fulfill "In front of Hash-m" - in the west -
we neglect "to the face of the altar";
5. If we fulfill "to the face of the altar" - in the
south - we can also fulfill "in front of Hash-m";
i. This is done by bringing it to the south side
of the corner.
6. Question: How does this fulfill "in front of
Hash-m"?
7. Answer (Rav Ashi): R. Elazar holds that the altar is
entirely in the north (so the south side faces the
Heichal).
(f) Question: What does the Beraisa mean, 'this suffices'?
(g) Answer (Rav Ashi): One might have thought, one must tilt
the vessel to make the Minchah itself touch the altar -
we hear, this is not so.
1. Suggestion: Maybe this really is required!
2. Rejection: "He will bring it to the Kohen ... he
will bring it near the altar".
i. Just as it is brought to the Kohen in a vessel,
also it is brought near the altar in a vessel.
(h) (Beraisa): He removes the frankincense to 1 side.
1. This is so the Kometz should not include any
frankincense.
i. (Mishnah): If he took a Kometz, and this
included a pebble or grain of sand or a drop of
frankincense, the Kometz is invalid.
(i) (Beraisa): He takes a Kometz from a place where the oil
was absorbed well.
1. We learn from "From its fine flour and its oil";
"From its fine barley-flour and its oil".
(j) (Beraisa): He puts the Kometz in a service vessel, and
sanctifies it in a service vessel.
(k) Question: Why must it be sanctified - it was already
sanctified!
(l) Answer: A 2nd sanctified is required, as we find by
blood.
1. Even though the knife sanctified the blood at the
time of slaughter, one sanctifies the blood again by
putting it in a service vessel; the same applies to
the Kometz.
(m) (Beraisa): He takes the frankincense and puts it on the
Kometz.
1. We learn from "And all the frankincense on the
Minchah."
