prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Previous daf

Shabbos 139

1)

(a) Who is to blame when a generation is beset by many troubles?

(b) What is the significance of the Pasuk in Michah "be'Shachar Yishpotu, bi'Mechir Yoru, be'Kesef Yiksomu"?

(c) Which three punishments did they suffer for this?

(d) Why were they not completely destroyed (see Maharsha)?

2)
(a) What do we learn from the Pasuk (ibid) "ve'Ashivah Yadi Alayich ... ve'Ashivah Shoftayich Kevarishonah ve'Yo'atzayich Kevatechilah"?

(b) On what merit will Yisrael be redeemed?

(c) What does the following mean:

  1. 'I Batli Yehiri, Batli Amgushi'?
  2. 'I Batli Dayni, Batli Gezirfti'?
(d) "Shiber Hashem Mateh Resha'im Shevet Moshlim" - Yeshayah.
Who were ..
  1. ... the "Mateh Resha'im"?
  2. ... the "Shevet Moshlim"?
3) "Ki Kapechem Nego'alu ba'Dam, ve'Etzbe'osechem be'Avon, Sifsosechem Dibru Sheker, Leshonchem Avlah Tehegeh" (Yeshayah). Which four groups are referred to here, and what was the sin of each group?

4)

(a) The Torah describes Yosef with the words "u'le'Kodkod Nezir Echav" (Vayechi).
What do we learn from this description?

(b) The Pasuk writes in Vayigash "Vayishtu Vayishkeru *Imo*". What are the two ways of interpreting this Pasuk?

(c) What reward did Aharon receive for the joy that he felt in his heart at Moshe's appointment as leader of Yisrael (rather than being jealous, as might have been expected)?

5)
(a) Shmuel instructed Rav Menashyah to reply to the three Sha'alos which the B'nei Bashchar had asked Levi:
Why could Levi not answer the Sha'alos himself?

(b) Why did Rav Menashyah rule stringently regarding putting up a canopy, ignoring the leniency of Rami bar Yechezkel (quoted on Amud Aleph)?

(c) The second Sha'aleh concerned planting hops in a vine-yard.
What exactly was the Sha'aleh?

(d) In this case, too, Rav Menashyah ruled stringently because they were not B'nei Torah.
What would the correct Halachic ruling otherwise have been?

(e) In connection with planting hops in a vine-yard, some Amaro'im permitted it, others forbade it. Rav Mesharshaya would give a Perutah to a non-Jewish child to do it on his behalf.
Why not to a Jewish child, or to a grown-up gentile?

6)
(a) Regarding the Sha'aleh of burying someone who died on Yom-Tov he also ruled stringently.
What is the Halachah in this case?

(b) Is there any difference between the second day of an ordinary Yom-Tov, and the second day of Rosh Hashanah?

(c) What is the Din regarding eating an egg on the second day, if it was laid ...

  1. ... on the first day of Yom-Tov?
  2. ... on the first day of Rosh Hashanah?
Answers to questions

7)

(a) Why is one permitted to go into the street wearing the curtain of a canopy with its strap, but not with a Tallis with Tzitzis that are not fully Kasher?

(b) Under which conditions is it permitted to put up a strainer on Yom-Tov to strain wine-dregs?

(c) How does this differ from making fresh beer- even when one already has beer? Why the difference?

8)
(a) The Rabbanan complained to Rav Ashi about Rav Huna bar Chiva, who (on Shabbos) used to place a piece of garlic into the tap-hole of a barrel, and to sleep in the ferry-boat belonging to a gentile.
What did he claim to be doing in each of these two cases?

(b) What was his real intention?

(c) How did Rav Ashi justify Rav Huna bar Chiva's actions?

9)
(a) May one add water to dregs that have been lying in a strainer from before Shabbos?

(b) May one filter wine in a cloth or a wicker-work basket on Shabbos?

(c) The Mishnah writes: 've'Nosnin Beitzah bi'Mesanenes shel Chardal'.
What are the two meanings of this statement.

(d) Why is this not a question of Borer?

10)
(a) The Tana Kama permits preparing Anumlin (a spiced honey drink) on Shabbos.
How does Rebbi Yehudah qualify the amount that one is permitted to prepare?

(b) What does Rebbi Tzadok say?

(c) How do we reconcile Ze'iri, who permits filtering wine or water on Shabbos, only if it is clear, with Raban Shimon ben Gamliel in a Beraisa, who permits pouring a barrel of wine, with its dregs, into a cloth-filter, on Shabbos?

(d) 'u'Vilevad she'Lo Ya'aseh Guma'.
Why not (two reasons)?

11)
(a) What care should one take when setting up a strainer on the mouth of the vessel?

(b) When may one place a cloth on top of a barrel even if it there is more than a Tefach from the cloth to the floor of the barrel?

(c) Why may one not press straw and wooden splinters across the mouth of a small jar?

(d) Rav Papa used to gently pour the beer from one vessel to another, leaving the dregs in the first vessel. This is permitted because it does not resemble Borer. Why was it not forbidden, because of the final drops that dripped from the dregs of the first vessel, and which *do* resemble Borer?
