Shabbos 8

1)

(a) According to Abaye, if someone throws a Kaveres (a bee-hive) which is ten Tefachim tall and a little under six Tefachim in diameter, he is Chayav. Why?

(b) If this Shiur is only mi'de'Rabbanan, then what would the diameter need to be, for the thrower to be Chayav Chatas, and why?

(c) Why would he be Patur if the Kaveres was six Tefachim in diameter?

(d) Why does Rava exempt him from a Chiyuv, even if the Keveres is less than six Tefachim?

2)
(a) If the Kaveres (of less than six Tefachim in diameter) landed upside down, he is Patur, provided it is at least seven and a half Tefachim high or more. Why is that?

(b) Must it be specifically seven and a half?

(c) Rav Ashi says that he is nevertheless Chayav. Why?

3)
(a) If someone throws four Amos on to a board of between three and nine Tefachim which is fixed in the Reshus ha'Rabim, will he be Chayav?

(b) What will be the Din if it lands on a board which is nine Tefachim high, and why the difference?

(c) Rav Yosef says that the same applies to a hole of nine Tefachim deep. What does Rava say about that, and what is his reason?

(d) Then what does the Beraisa mean when it says 've'Chen be'Guma'?

4)

(a) 'Niskaven Lishbos bi'Reshus ha'Rabim, ve'Hini'ach Eiruvo ba'Bor le'Ma'alah mi'Yud Tefachim, Eiruvo Eiruv, le'Matah mi'Yud Tefachim, Ein Eiruvo Eiruv'. How does the Gemara explain 'le'Ma'aleh mi'Yud' ... Eiruvo Eiruv'?

(b) What is then the Kashya on Rava?

(c) The Gemara answers that it speaks when he and his Eiruv are in a Karmelis.
What does this mean, and why does it then refer to it as a Reshus ha'Rabim?

(d) In the second answer, the Gemara establishes the Beraisa like Rebbi. What is the Gemara's second answer?

5)
(a) The Mishnah in ha'Zorek says 'Im Hayah Rekek Mayim, u'Reshus ha'Rabim Mehaleches Bo, ha'Zorek le'Sochah Arba Amos, Chayav.... ve'Rekek Mayim she'Reshus ha'Rabim Mehaleches Bo, ha'Zorek le'Socho Arba Amos, Chayav.' Why does the Tana see fit to mention 'Rekek Mayim' twice in the Beraisa, and why are they both necessary?

(b) And how do we prove Rava's opinion (cited in the previous questions) from the Beraisa's repetition of the word 'Mehaleches Bo'?

6) One might transport a large bundle of long canes by picking up one end and throwing it down along the street.
Would one then be Chayav for carrying on Shabbos, and why is this?

7)

(a) We learnt above - in 6a - in a Beraisa, that one may stand on a threshold and take from a poor man or give to him. Which kind of threshold must this be speaking about, and why?

(b) What exactly is the threshold of a Reshus ha'Rabim?

(c) And what, in this context, are the thresholds of a Reshus ha'Yachid and a Karmelis respectively?

(d) The Beraisa exempts someone who is standing on a Makom Petur, and who takes an article from someone in one Reshus, and hands it to someone in the opposite Reshus. In that case, how do we explain Rava, who rules that someone who carries an article above ten Tefachim (which is a Makom Petur) is Chayav?
