Shabbos 118
1) [line 9] TAMCHUY - a charity-plate distributed daily, that contained
food collected from contributors; soup-kitchen

every Friday
3) [line 16] MA'ALEI SHABATA - Friday [morning]
4) [line 21] MI'KIKAR B'FUNDYON ME'4 SE'IN B'SELA - [not less] than a loaf
of bread that sold for a Pundyon (a certain small coin), when the price of
wheat was such that one Sela (a coin equal to 48 Pundyonin) could buy four
Se'in (approx. 33 or 58 liters, depending upon the Halachic opinion) of
wheat. Chazal estimated that two meals could be eaten from this loaf.

[for his journey]

11) [line 33] EIN KEVA L'SHETIYAH - there is no set time (or amount) for
drinking
12) [line 36] CHEVLO SHEL MASHI'ACH
"The birth pangs of Mashi'ach." The period of time that will precede the
coming of Mashi'ach. It is compared to the pain of a woman in labor because
it will be fraught with suffering of the worst sort, never experienced
before by the Jewish people. Just as a woman who is about to give birth may
feel that her end is approaching, so too will the Jewish people not know
whether they will survive that time of tribulation. However, just as a
woman who withstands the pain of labor merits to experience the birth of
her child, so too will the Jewish people who endure the suffering and
remain true to the Almighty, merit to experience the coming of Mashi'ach
13) [line 37] MILCHEMES GOG U'MAGOG
Magog is first mentioned among the sons of Yefes, son of Noach, in Breishis
10:2. The prophet Yechezkel (chapters 38-39) describes a cataclysmic war
lead by Gog of the land of Magog, where many nations combine forces to wage
war against the land of Yisrael. The prophecy assures Gog that HaSh-m
Himself will ruin the war effort and will destroy all of his multitudes. It
is traditionally assumed that this war will take place at the end of days,
preceding the revelation of HaSh-m as master of His world.
14) [line 40] "YOM EVRAH HA'YOM HA'HU" - "That day is a day of wrath, a day
of trouble and distress, a day of ruin and desolation, a day of darkness
and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness." (Tzefanyah 1:15) - Although
the prophet is describing the punishment that HaSh-m will mete upon the
inhabitants of Yerushalayim who continue in their wicked ways and fail to
do Teshuvah, the Gemara finds a hint in this verse to the punishment that
sinners will receive in Gehinom.
15) [line 41] NACHALAH BELI METZARIM - an portion or estate without bounds
16) [last line] "AZ TIS'ANAG ..." - "Then shall you delight yourself in
HaSh-m, and I will cause you to ride upon the high places of the earth, and
feed you with the inheritance of Yakov, your father, for the mouth of
HaSh-m has spoken." (Yeshayahu 58:14)

*17*) [line 4] KOL HA'ARATZOS HA'EL - that is, even the lands of the Keini,
Kenizi and Kadmoni, three of the ten nations that were promised to Avraham
Avinu (see Bereishis 15:19) that were not included in the conquest of
Yehoshua
18) [line 14] TERADIN - beets
19) [line 15] ROSHEI SHUMIN - the green leaves of a garlic or the garlic
cloves themselves
20) [line 17] KASA D'HARSENA - fish which is cooked in its own oil with
flour
21) [line 31] PESUKEI D'ZIMRA - selections from Tehilim that are read each
morning during the Shacharis prayer, which are meant to "prune" (from the
word Zomer) the heart of all outside influences, so that it is possible to
direct one's thoughts solely towards HaSh-m
22) [line 31] IM DIMDUMEI CHAMAH - (a) when the sun is red (from the word
Adom), i.e. at sunrise and at sunset (RASHI); (b) when the sun is absent
(from the verse "va'Yidom ha'Shemesh," - "and the sun was silent," -
Yehoshua 6:13, i.e. at the point where it is not visible yet or anymore),
i.e. at dawn and at dusk (RITVA)
23) [line 33] "YIRA'UCHA IM SHAMESH, V'LIFNEI YARE'ACH DOR DORIM" - "May
they fear You as long as the sun and the moon endure, throughout all
generations." (Tehilim 72:5) - The word "Yira'ucha" is referring to prayer,
which instills the fear of HaSh-m into a person
*24*) [line 38] L'DIDI CHASHDAN V'LO HAVAH BI - Rashi and Rashbam (Pesachim
112b) relate the story of when Rav Papa was suspected of suffocating a
non-Jewish child by sitting on him (but see Berachos 8b) (M. Kornfeld)
