Pesachim 89
1) [line 1] CHAZEH VA'SHOK
The chest and the hind leg of the Shelamim (peace offering) are waved in a
prescribed manner and are then given as a gift to the Kohanim, as described
in Vayikra (7:28-36). They are eaten by the Kohanim, their wives, children
and slaves.
2) [line 17] SEMICHAH
Semichah is the Mitzvah to press one's hands with all his might on the head
of his sacrifice before it is slaughtered, as described in Vayikra 1:4.
3) [line 38] SHEFALIM - negligent, lax
4a) [line 46] MI'CHIYUSEI D'SEH - while the lamb is still alive
b) [line 47] ME'HAVAYASEI D'SEH - while the actions (Avodos) of the lamb
are still being done

5) [line 4] SHE'HAYU YADAV SHEL ECHAD MEHEN YAFOS - this is a euphemism that
means that one of them could eat a large amount quickly
6) [line 6] HA KABILTUN - you accepted upon yourselves that I could eat with
you (as much as I can)
7) [line 7] L'SIKUNEI ZEVICHAH - (lit. to take proper care of the Korban
[Pesach]) by eating an average portion, no meat would be left over to become
Nosar (see Background to Pesachim 83:3)
8) [line 15] DE'OS SHA'ANI - a number of people (each with his own mindset)
is a different case
9) [line 26] SIBOLES - a meal to which all participants contribute
10) [line 30] D'TZAVSA B'ALMA HU - that it is for mere companionship
11) [line 38] ARIVU RIFTA - they "mixed" i.e. shared their bread
12) [line 45] ME'AH PAPEI V'LO CHADA RAVINA - it is better to eat with 100
Rav Papas than with one Ravina (see Insights)
*13*) [line 47] U'MA'OS KOL SHE'HEN - that is, the money of Chulin with
which the purchaser bought the Olah or Shelamim, even if they were more than
the animal's worth.
14) [line 47] NEDAVAH
Optional Korbanos are called Nedavos. The contents of one of the Shofaros
(charity boxes) that were kept in the Mikdash were used to buy Korbenos
"Kayitz ha'Mizbe'ach" (communal Olos) to be sacrificed when the Mizbe'ach
was not otherwise in use. (Rashi Sukah 56a DH Kayitz explains that these
offerings were called "Kayitz," because they were like a "dessert" [Kayitz =
cut figs, a common dessert food] to the Mizbe'ach.) These Korbanos were
Korbenos Tzibur (offerings brought by the entire people) and not Korbenos
Yachid (personal Korbanos).
15) [line 50] CHAVRIN BAVLA'EI - our Babylonian colleagues
