Pesachim 86

PESACHIM 86 - has been kindly dedicated by Reb Shimon Bernstein of Boro Park, N.Y.

1a) [line 3] EIN MAFTIRIN ACHAR HA'PESACH - after the Korban Pesach we do not conclude
b) [line 3] AFIKOMAN - [by saying,] "Take your utensils out of here to eat with another Chaburah" (AFIKOMAN = APIKu MANaichu = remove your utensils) - this follows the opinion of Rav; Shmuel, Rav Chanina Bar Shila and Rebbi Yochanan explain that it means, "Bring out types of sweet treats")

2) [line 13] "VA'YITEN DAVID LI'SHLOMO VENO ES TAVNIS HA'ULAM V'ES BATAV (V'ES GANZAKAV) [V'GANZAKAV] VA'ALIYOSAV VA'CHADARAV HA'PENIMIM U'VEIS HA'KAPORES" - "Then David gave to Shlomo his son the pattern of the Ulam, and of its houses and of its treasuries, and of its upper chambers, and of it inner rooms, and of the place of the ark with its covering" (Divrei ha'Yamim I 28:11)

3) [line 14] "HA'KOL BI'CHSAV MI'YAD HASH-M ALAI HISKIL; KOL MAL'ACHOS HA'TAVNIS" - "All this, said he, is put in writing by the hand of HaSh-m who instructed me, all the works of this pattern." (Divrei ha'Yamim I 28:19)

4) [line 18] MECHILOS - tunnels or caverns
*5*) [line 22] L'OSAN SHTEI AMOS - that is, the roofs are only Kodesh in the sense that they are used for the purpose of placing holy items there; they do not really have Kedushah (Tosfos)

6) [line 22] 2 AMOS - two measuring sticks of a cubit's length
7) [line 23] SHUSHAN HA'BIRAH - a structure on top of the eastern gate of the Azarah. On this structure was a relief sculpture of the capital of Persia, Shushan. The sculpture was built in honor of the King of Persia who helped build the Beis ha'Mikdash, to remind the Jews that they still were not completely free, or that they had once been exiled due to their sins (RABEINU CHANANEL, according to the Gemara in Menachos 98a).

8) [line 24] SHEL MOSHE - the cubit-long measuring stick that Moshe himself used
8) [line 26] HA'UMNIN - the craftsmen
9) [line 30] B'VAR SHURA - a small, ground-level wall located behind a large wall; a retaining wall

12) [line 16] CHEIL
Surrounding the Azarah courtyard (including the Ezras Nashim), ten Amos away from its wall, was a low wooden fence, called the Soreg. It was ten Tefachim high, and consisted of woven wooden slats laid crosswise, similar to room dividers. The area of ten Amos that was between the Azaros and the Soreg is called the Cheil. (According to the Rambam, the Cheil refers to the retaining wall that surrounded the Azaros - perhaps, part of which can be seen today.)

10) [line 30] "[CHASHAV HASH-M L'HASHCHIS CHOMAS BAS TZIYON, NATAH KAV, LO HESHIV YADO MI'BALE'A;] VA'YA'AVEL CHEIL V'CHOMAH' YACHDAV UMLALU" - "[HaSh- m planned to destroy the wall of the daughter of Tziyon: He has stretched out a line, He has not withdrawn his hand from destroying. Therefore] He made the rampart and the wall lament; they languish together." (Eichah 2:8)

12) [line 33] KOFETZ - he closes

86b---------------------------------------86b

13) [line 3] YESH EM LA'MASORES/YESH EM LA'MIKRA

YESH EM LA'MIKRA - we interpret the Pasuk based on the way it is read Some words in the Torah, based on the Mesorah, are read differently from the way that they are written. The Machlokes of the Tana'im involves from which one we learn out a Drash.
