1a) [line 2] ILA'AH GAVAR - the upper food "overpowers" the lower food; i.e.
in a case where either one food is permitted and the other is forbidden or
meat and milk mix, if the upper food is hot and the lower food is cold, the
upper food heats the lower food and they cook together so that they both
become forbidden. If the upper food is cold and the lower food is hot, the
upper food cools the lower food so that they do not cook together and as a
result, the food that is permitted remains so, or the meat and milk are both
permitted (this Halachah will be qualified later in the Gemara)
b) [line 3] TATA'AH GAVAR - the lower food "overpowers" the upper food (the
opposite of the above)
2) [line 18] L'SOLES D'HADAR HUDRANEI - the flour that is all around it
3) [line 35] AD'MEIKAR LEI - before it has a chance to cool it off
4) [line 42] MELI'ACH HAREI HU K'ROSE'ACH
Something that is salted is considered as if it is hot (due to fire); salt
causes blood to be absorbed in a dish as if it were heated by fire.
5) [line 42] KAVUSH HAREI HU K'MEVUSHAL
A food that was soaked in vinegar is considered as if it were cooked in that
liquid. The Rishonim disagree as to whether this Halachah applies to other
liquids as well. See Insights.
6) [line 43] SHE'LO NE'ECHAL MACHMAS MILCHO - (a) it is not usually eaten
(without being washed) because of the large amount of salt on it, e.g. meat
that has been salted for preservation (RASHI Chulin 112a); (b) meat that has
been salted in the manner usually used for tanning hides (TOSFOS and ROSH
Chulin ibid.); (c) meat that has been salted for Kashering (RABEINU TAM
ibid.)
7) [line 44] KADA D'KAMCHA - a pitcher of Kutach (a dip which is prepared by
cooking whey with stale bread and salt)
8) [line 45] MAN CHAKIM L'MISHRA MILSA KI HA ... - who but Rav Chinena ...
is wise enough to permit something like this
9) [last line] PILEI - cracks
10) [last line] METUBAL B'TAVLEI - it is seasoned with spices
76b---------------------------------------76b
11) [line 2] KACHUSH - lean
13) [line 24] HA'SE'ORIM SHO'AVOS - the barley draws out and absorbs the
wine vapor
14) [line 31] BINISA - fish
15) [line 33] D'KASHYA L'REICHA UL'DAVAR ACHER - because it causes bad-
smelling breath and Tzara'as
16) [line 34] HA'OMER
(a) There is a Mitzvah to bring the Korban ha'Omer on the second day of
Pesach. A quantity of barley is reaped after nightfall after the first day
of Pesach. At this time the grain is still moist, and the process of
extracting one Omer (approximately 2.5 or 4.3 liters, depending upon the
differing Halachic opinions) of barley flour is extremely difficult. The
flour is baked and offered as a Korban Minchah on the 16th of Nisan. It is
also referred to as the Minchas Bikurim -- Vayikra 2:14-16).
(b) In addition, a lamb is offered as an Olah, as it states in Vayikra
23:12.
(c) The Korban ha'Omer is the first offering of the new grain of the year,
and as such it removes the prohibition against eating from the new grain.
17) [line 34] SHTEI HA'LECHEM
(a) The Shtei ha'Lechem is an offering of two loaves of bread (that are
Chametz) which is brought on Shavuos. It is baked from the newly grown wheat
(Vayikra 23:17). One loaf is given to the Kohen Gadol and the other is
divided among the rest of the Kohanim in the Mikdash at the time. They are
eaten on the day of Shavuos and the night afterwards, until midnight (RAMBAM
Hilchos Temidin u'Musafin 8:11).
(b) Afterwards, all new wheat is permitted to be used for Menahcos.
18) [line 34] LECHEM HA'PANIM
(a) The Lechem ha'Panim (Showbread) is an offering of 12 loaves (that are
Matzah) which are arranged in two stacks (Sedarim), six loaves to each
stack, on the Golden Table of the Mishkan or Beis ha'Mikdash. Fresh loaves
were arranged on the Table every Shabbos and are left there until the
following Shabbos. The loaves that are removed are eaten by the Kohanim.
(Vayikra 24:5-9).
(b) A Kometz (the amount that will fit under the middle three fingers when
they are pressed upon the palm) of Levonah (frankincense) in a Bazach (bowl)
is placed alongside each stack. Only the Levonah is offered on the
Mizbe'ach.
19) [line 35] ZIVCHEI SHALMEI TZIBUR
On Shavuos, two sheep that are Zivchei Shelamim are offered in conjunction
with the Shtei ha'Lechem. (These sheep were the only Shelamim brought by the
Tzibur, and the only Shelamim that were Kodshei Kodshim.)
21) [line 37] CHAGIGAS CHAMISHAH ASAR
Every Jewish male is obligated to come to the Azarah of the Beis ha'Mikdash
on Pesach, Shavuos and Sukos, and bring an animal as a Korban Chagigah, as
the Torah states, "Shalosh Regalim Tachog Li ba'Shanah" (Shemos 23:14).
