Nedarim 57
1) WHAT COMES FROM FRUITS
(a) (Mishnah): 'These fruits are forbidden to me, or to my
mouth' - he is also forbidden in what they are exchanged
for and what grows from them;
(b) 'That I will eat and taste" - he is permitted what they
are exchanged for and what grows from them, if it is a
species in which the seed dissipates;
1. If the seed remains intact, he is forbidden even in
what grows from what grows from the original fruit.
(c) Reuven told his wife - 'What you produce is forbidden to
me, or to my mouth' - he is also forbidden in what they
are exchanged for and what grows from them;
(d) 'That I will eat and taste' - he is permitted what they
are exchanged for and what grows from them, if it is a
species in which the seed dissipates;
1. If the seed remains intact, he is forbidden even in
what grows from what grows from the original fruit.
(e) Reuven told his wife - 'What you make, I will not taste
or wear until Pesach' - what she makes before Pesach, is
permitted after Pesach;
1. 'What you make before Pesach, I will not taste or
wear' - what she makes before Pesach, is forbidden
after Pesach;
(f) 'You may not benefit from me until Pesach, if you go to
your father's house before Sukos - if she went before
Pesach, she may not benefit until Pesach;
57b---------------------------------------57b
1. (If she benefited before Pesach, and went) after
Pesach, she transgresses "He will not profane his
word".
(g) 'You may not benefit from me until Sukos, if you go to
your father's house before Pesach - if she went before
Pesach, she may not benefit until Sukos;
1. She is permitted to go after Pesach.
2) DOES GROWTH NULLIFY THE SOURCE?
(a) (Gemara - Yishmael of Yama) Question: An onion was
uprooted in Shemitah, and planted in the 8th year, and
the added growth is more than the bulb (that was planted)
- what is the law?
1. Do we say, the added growth is permitted, but the
bulb is forbidden (has the law of Shemitah produce?
2. Or, not (Ran - the added growth is also forbidden;
Tosfos - the bulb is also permitted)?
(b) Answer #1 (R. Yitzchak Nafcha): We can learn from the
following.
1. (R. Chanina Trisa'ah): A Terumah onion was planted,
and the added growth is more than the bulb, it is
permitted.
(c) Objection (R. Yirmiyah): Why learn from 1 teaching of the
Amora'im, when this opposes 2 teachings?!
1. Teaching #1 (R. Yochanan) - A sapling (a tree in its
first 3 years (Orlah), which is forbidden) was
grafted onto a mature tree. There were fruits on the
sapling - even if they grow 200 times larger, (the
original fruit remains) forbidden.
2. Teaching #2 (R. Yonason): An onion was planted in a
vineyard (which makes it forbidden) - even though
the vineyard was later uprooted (and the added
growth was 200 times the bulb), the bulb remains
forbidden.
(d) Answer #2 (R. Ami): We can learn from the following.
1. (R. Yochanan): A Litra (a measure) of onions which
were tithed and planted - when they grow, one tithes
the entire amount.
i. We see, the bulb is nullified, and we go after
the law of the growth (and it is all considered
untithed).
(e) Rejection: We cannot answer the question from this -
perhaps we only say that the bulb is nullified to be
stringent.
