Nazir 8
1) ACCEPTANCE OF MULTIPLE NEZIRUYOS
(a) (Mishnah): 'I am Nazir as the hair on my head, as the
dirt of the ground, as the sand of the sea' - he is a
Nazir Olam, and shaves once every 30 days;
(b) Rebbi says, he does not shave every 30 days; the case of
one who shaves every 30 days is one who says 'Are upon me
Neziruyos as the hair on my head, as the dirt of the
ground, as the sand of the sea'.
(c) 'I am a Nazir' this house-full, or this box-full - we ask
him what he meant.
1. If he says that he accepted 1 long Nezirus - he is a
Nazir for 30 days;
2. If he did not have specific intention - we view the
box as if it was full of mustard seeds, and he is a
Nazir all his days.
(d) 'I am a Nazir from here until the place Ploni' - we
estimate how many days journey this is.
1. If it is less than 30 days - he is a Nazir for 30
days.
2. If it is more than 30 days - he is a Nazir as the
amount of days.
(e) 'I am a Nazir as the number of days in a solar year' - he
is a Nazir for 365 times.
1. R. Yehudah says, there was a case of a man who did
this; upon completion, he died.
2) WHY ARE WE STRINGENT?
(a) (Gemara) Question: Why do we view the box as being full
of mustard, to say that he is a Nazir all his life?
1. Why not say, it is full of gourds, and he will
eventually become permitted!
(b) Answer (Chizkiyah): Our Mishnah is as R. Shimon; R.
Yehudah would argue.
1. (Beraisa): 'I am a Nazir on condition that this
stack is at least 100 Kor'; the stack was lost or
stolen before he was able to measure it. R. Shimon
says, one must be stringent in a doubtful case of
Nezirus; R. Yehudah says, we are lenient in a
doubtful case of Nezirus, he is not a Nazir.
(c) Rejection (R. Yochanan): Our Mishnah can even be as R.
Yehudah.
1. R. Yehudah is lenient in the Beraisa, because we are
unsure if he became a Nazir at all;
2. In our Mishnah, he definitely became a Nazir - how
can we end the Nezirus?
(d) Question: We can end it by saying that the box is full of
gourds!
(e) Answer: You cannot say that he accepted multiple
Neziruyos upon himself - R. Yehudah holds as Rebbi.

(f) (Mishnah): Rebbi says, he does not shave every 30 days;
the case of one who shaves every 30 days is one who says
'Are upon me Neziruyos as the hair on my head, as the
dirt of the ground, as the sand of the sea'.
(g) Question: Does R. Yehudah really hold as Rebbi?
(h) 'I am a Nazir as the number of days in a solar year' ...
R. Yehudah says, there was a case of a man who did this;
upon completion, he died.
1. This fits well if R. Yehudah holds that he accepted
many Neziruyos.
2. Question: If R. Yehudah holds as Rebbi, that he only
accepted 1 Nezirus - would he say that he completed
them?
(i) The following also shows that he does not hold as Rebbi!
1. (Beraisa - R. Yehudah): 'I am a Nazir as the number
of figs piled up in summer, or as the number of
sheaves (on the field) in Shmitah' - he is a Nazir
this many times.
(j) Answer: When he says 'the number of', he accepts multiple
terms.
(k) Question: Does Rebbi really hold that saying 'the number
of' makes a difference?
1. (Beraisa): 'I am a Nazir as the number of days in
the solar year' - he is a Nazir 365 times; 'As the
days of the moon' - he is a Nazir that many times;
2. Rebbi says, he only accepts multiple terms if he
says 'Are upon me Neziruyos as the number of days of
the sun or moon'.
(l) Answer: R. Yehudah holds as Rebbi when he does not say
'the number of' - in such a case, if he did not say 'Are
upon me Neziruyos', he is only a Nazir once.
1. They argue when he says 'the number of' - R. Yehudah
says, he accepts multiple terms; Rebbi says, only 1.
3) MULTIPLE TERMS OF NEZIRUS
(a) (Beraisa): 'I am a Nazir all the days of my life'; or, 'I
am a Nazir Olam' - he is a Nazir Olam;
(b) Even if he said 100 or 1000 years, he is not a Nazir
Olam, rather an eternal Nazir.
(c) (Beraisa): 'I am a Nazir and 1' - he is a Nazir for
twice; if he continued, 'And more - he is a Nazir for 3
times; if he continued, 'And further' - he is a Nazir 4
times.
(d) Question: This is obvious!
(e) Answer: One might have thought, 'And further' adds on as
many terms as he already accepted, and he is a Nazir 6
times - we hear, this is not so.
(f) (Beraisa - Sumchus): 'I am a Nazir' - if he said 'Hen',
he is a Nazir once; 'Digun' - twice; 'Trigun' - 3 times';
'Tatrigun' - 4 times; 'Penitgun' - 5 times.
(g) (Beraisa): A round house, or one with 2, 3 or 5 walls
cannot receive the law of a leprous house.
1. There are 2 superfluous occurrences of the word
"Walls" - each teaches 2, so we learn that the house
must have exactly 4.
