Nazir 44
1) [line 1] TIGLACHAS TUM'AH - The shaving of a Nazir Tamei
If a Nazir becomes Tamei through contact with or being in the same room as a
corpse, on the third and seventh days he must be sprinkled with water that
has the ashes of the Parah Adumah in it to become Tahor. On the seventh day
of his purification he shaves off the hair of his head. On the eighth day,
he brings the sacrifices of a Nazir who becomes Tamei and begins counting
anew the days of Nezirus that he accepted upon himself. The sacrifices he
brings are two Torim (turtledoves) or two Benei Yonah (young common doves),
one as a Chatas and one as an Olah. He must also bring a yearling sheep as
an Asham. (These Korbanos and this shaving are in addition to the Korbanos
and shaving that he, and every Nazir, brings upon the completion of his
Nezirus) (SEFER HA'CHINUCH #377)
2) [line 3] SHE'GUFAH TALUY BO - that is, that he is her next of kin and it
is incumbent upon him to arrange for her burial (TOSFOS)
3) [line 9] GINZAK - Gazaka, a city in the north of Media Atropatene, near
the Caspian Sea
4) [line 17] LO HUTAR MI'CHELALO - there is no exception to the general
prohibition to consume that which grows on a vine. (However, there are
exceptions to the general prohibitions of shaving and becoming Tamei; e.g. a
Nazir who is cured from Tzara'as must shave and a Nazir who finds a Mes
Mitzvah must become Tamei and bury it.)
5) [line 21] KORBAN (KORBAN NAZIR TAMEI)
See above, entry #1.
6) [line 32] "[V'HIZIR...] VEHA'YAMIM HA'RISHONIM YIPLU, KI TAMEI NIZRO." -
"[He shall dedicate to HaSh-m the days of his Nezirus and he shall bring a
sheep in its first year as a Korban Asham;] and the first days shall fall
aside, for his Nezirus has been contaminated." (Bamidbar 6:12)
7) [line 39] "[V'CHI YAMUS MES ALAV B'FESA PIS'OM,] V'TIMEI ROSH NIZRO;
[V'GILACH ROSHO B'YOM TAHARASO, BA'YOM HA'SHEVI'I YEGALCHENU.]" - "[If a
person should die near him very suddenly,] and be Metamei his Nazirite head;
[he shall shave his head on the day he becomes Tahor, on the seventh day he
shall shave it.]" (Bamidbar 6:9)
8) [line 42] "[KOL YEMEI NEDER NIZRO,] TA'AR LO YA'AVOR AL ROSHO [...KADOSH
YIHEYEH, GADEL PERA SE'AR ROSHO.]" - "[All the days of the vow of his
Nezirus] no razor shall come upon his head; [until the days are fulfilled,
during which he separates himself for HaSh-m, he shall be holy, and shall
let the hair of his head grow.]" (Bamidbar 6:5)

9) [line 1] HAYAH MAZEH (HAZA'AS MEI CHATAS - The water containing the ashes
of the Parah Adumah)
(a) MEI CHATAS - If a person (or utensil) became Tamei through touching a
Mes, he must wait seven days to become Tahor. On the third and seventh days
he must have spring water mixed with the ashes of the Parah Adumah (Mei
Chatas) sprinkled on him. A person who is Tahor dips three Ezov branches
(hyssops) that have been bound together into the mixture, and sprinkles them
on the person who is Tamei. On the seventh day, he immerses in a Mikvah
after the mixture is sprinkled on him in order to complete his Taharah.
(Bamidbar 19:17-19)
(b) EFER CHATAS (The ashes of the Parah Adumah) - The Parah Adumah, an
exclusively red-haired female cow is burned on Har ha'Zeisim and its ashes
are used for making a person Tahor if he is Tamei Mes. Only a cow that has
not had a yoke placed upon it and has had no other work done with it is fit
to be used as a Parah Adumah. A place is prepared for its slaughter on Har
ha'Zeisim, opposite the gate to the Azarah (the courtyard of the Beis
ha'Mikdash). After it is slaughtered, its blood is sprinkled in the
direction of the Beis ha'Mikdash seven times. A cedar branch, some Ezov
branches and a piece of crimson wool are thrown into the carcass of the cow
while it is burning. (Bamidbar 19:1-22)
10) [line 5] METZORA
(a) THE PROCESS BY WHICH A METZORA BECOMES TAHOR - On the day that a Metzora
(see Background to Nazir 17:7b) is healed from his Tzara'as, he takes two
kosher birds (Tziporei Metzora), a piece of cedar, some crimson wool and a
hyssop branch. One of the birds is slaughtered over fresh spring water in a
clay bowl. A Kohen dips the other bird, along with the other articles, into
the spring water that is mixed with the blood and sprinkles it seven times
on the Metzora. The living bird is sent away towards the fields. Both birds
are Asur b'Hana'ah, but the Isur is removed from the living bird after it is
sent off to the fields.
(b) The Metzora next shaves all places on his body that have a collection of
hair and that are exposed, and immerses in a Mikvah. He is now considered
Tahor to the extent that he may enter a settlement, but marital relations
are forbidden (Mo'ed Katan 7b). He waits seven days, and on the seventh day
he once more shaves and immerses. He is now completely Tahor but is still a
Mechusar Kaparah (see Background to Nedarim 35:9).
(c) On the eighth day, the Metzora must bring Korbanos to complete his
Taharah. The animals Korbanos are two male sheep and one female sheep. One
of the male sheep is offered as an Olah, the other as an *Asham*. The female
sheep is offered as a *Chatas*. If he could not afford to buy all these
animals, he is called a poor Metzora. The poor Metzora brings two
turtledoves or two common doves as the Olah and the Chatas; however, a sheep
is still brought as his Asham.
(d) The Metzora also brings a Log of olive oil to the Beis ha'Mikdash as
part of his purification process. A Kohen lifts up and waves (Tenufah) the
live Korban Asham with the Log of oil resting upon it. After the Asham is
slaughtered, some of the blood is placed on the body of the Metzora: on the
middle section of cartilage of the Metzora's right ear, on his right thumb
and on his right big toe. These parts of his body must be in the Azarah at
the time that the Kohen applies the blood. For this purpose he stands in the
gate of Nikanor (TY #18; the eastern gate of the Azarah, named for the man
who donated the brass doors of the gate (see Yoma 38). Although all of the
other gates of the Azarah had the Kedushah of the Azarah, Sha'ar Nikanor
only had the Kedushah of Har ha'Bayis. The Chachamim arranged this so that
the Metzora could stick his head, right hand and right foot into the Azarah
while standing under the archway of the gate.
(e) After all of the Korbanos were offered, a Kohen pours some of the oil in
his left hand and sprinkles it seven times towards the Kodesh ha'Kodashim.
He must dip his right finger in the oil each time. Oil is also put on the
body of the Metzora, on the places where the blood of the Asham was placed.
The remainder of the oil in the Kohen's hand is placed on the Metzora's
head. The rest of the Log which was not poured into the Kohen's hand was
given to the Kohanim, and must be consumed by male Kohanim in the Azarah (it
is one of the Kodshei Kodashim). (RAMBAM Hilchos Mechusarei Kaparah 4:2-3)
11) [line 7] ME'URAV SHEMESH - a person [who was Tamei] who has waited until
nightfall (lit. for whom the sun has set) after Tevilah, completing his
purification
12) [line 13] ["V'CHI YIT'HAR HA'ZAV MI'ZOVO, V'SAFAR LO SHIV'AS YAMIM
L'TAHARASO, V'CHIBES BEGADAV; V'RACHATZ BESARO B'MAYIM CHAYIM V'TAHER.
UVA'YOM HA'SHEMINI YIKACH LO SHTEI SORIM O SHNEI BENEI YONAH;] U'VA LIFNEI
HA'SH-M EL PESACH OHEL MO'ED, U'NESANAM EL HA'KOHEN" - "[And when the issue
of the Zav stops to flow, he shall count seven days for his Taharah, and he
shall immerse his clothes in a Mikvah; and he shall bathe his flesh in
running water from a spring, and he shall become Tahor. And on the eighth
day he shall take for himself two turtledoves or two young common doves,]
and he shall come before HaSh-m to the opening of the Ohel Mo'ed and he
shall give them to the Kohen." (Vayikra 15:13-14)
13) [line 17] TEVUL YOM
A Tevul Yom is a person or utensil that has been immersed in a Mikvah to
become Tahor for Chulin, but is still waiting for nightfall to be completely
Tahor with regard to Terumah. The level of Tum'ah of a Tevul Yom is minimal;
he or it is considered only a Sheni l'Tum'ah and if he or it touches Terumah
or Kodesh, the Terumah or Kodesh becomes Pasul and must be burned. Chulin
that he or it touches do not become Teme'im. After the following nightfall,
he or it becomes completely Tahor with regard to Terumah.
14) [line 17] ZAV
(a) A Zav, a man who emits Zov two or three times (see Background to
Pesachim 66:16 for a discussion of the Tum'ah of the Zav), whether it is
emitted in one day or in two or three consecutive days, is an Av ha'Tum'ah.
Zov is a clear discharge with the appearance of the white of a sterile or
spoiled egg, in contrast with semen, which has the consistency of fresh egg
white. Zov can also be a pus-like discharge resembling the liquid from
barley dough or soft barley batter.
(b) A man who emits a discharge that may be Zov is "checked " to determine
whether or not he becomes a Zav. If the discharge came about b'Ones (due to
an external cause), he is Tahor. Some examples of Ones are: 1. eating too
much; 2. drinking too much; 3. jumping; 4. being sick; etc. (see Zavim 2:2).
(c) A Zav must count seven "clean" days in which he sees no Zov in order to
start his purification process, as it states in Vayikra 15:13. On the
seventh day or afterwards, he must immerse in a spring during the day. At
nightfall he becomes Tahor, if he did not emit Zov again beforehand (ibid.).
(d) If a Zav emits Zov only two times, he does not bring a Korban. If he
emitted Zov three times, whether it is emitted in one day or in two or three
consecutive days, he has to bring a Korban after he becomes Tahor in order
to enter the Beis ha'Mikdash and to eat Kodshim and Terumah.
15) [line 19] "[UVA'YOM HA'SHEMINI] YAVI SHTEI SORIM O SHNEI BENEI YONAH EL
HA'KOHEN EL PESACH OHEL MO'ED" - "[And on the eighth day] he (the Nazir)
shall bring two turtledoves or two young common doves to the Kohen to the
opening of the Ohel Mo'ed" (Bamidbar 6:10)
