Kesuvos 24

KESUVOS 24 (18 Nisan) - Dedicated by Rabbi Yisrael Shaw in memory of his grandfather, Mr. Bernie Slotin (Dov Ber ben Moshe Mordechai z'l), of Savannah, Georgia, on his first Yahrzeit.

1) [line 9] NEICHUSH L'GOMLIN - let us suspect that they are repaying each other [by testifying falsely for each other]

2) [line 17] CHAMARIN - donkey-drivers (who have produce to sell)

3) [line 18] CHADASH
(a) Chadash is any grain that has not begun to take root until after the Korban ha'Omer is brought on the second day of Pesach. This grain may not be eaten until next year's Korban ha'Omer is brought (or when there is no Beis ha'Mikdash, until the day that it would have been brought), as it states in Vayikra 23:14 ("v'Lechem v'Kali v'Charmel Lo Sochlu...").
(b) Many Rishonim rule that the prohibition of Chadash applies mid'Oraisa even in Chutz la'Aretz.

4) [line 18] EINO MESUKAN - fruits from which Terumos and Ma'asros were not separated
5) [line 20] MUCHLEFES HA'SHITAH - their opinions (in the Beraisa) were mistakenly interchanged and should be switched

6) [line 20] BI'DEMAI HEIKILU- they were lenient in connection with Demai, since most people did actually seperate Ma'aser.
DEMAI
(a) Produce bought from an Am ha'Aretz (an unlearned Jew who is lax in his Torah-observance; see Berachos 47b) is referred to as Demai ("Da Mai?" -- "what is this?").
(b) Terumas Ma'aser and Ma'aser Sheni must be separated from this produce since a minority of Amei ha'Aretz cannot be trusted to have separated them before selling the produce. Terumah Gedolah, however, because of its stringency is presumed to have been separated. Ma'aser Rishon and Ma'aser Ani are separated from the produce, but they are eaten by the owner and not given to the Levi or the Ani (in keeping with the principle "ha'Motzi me'Chaveiro Alav ha'Re'ayah").

7) [last line] BESHE'KELEI UMNUSO B'YADO - when his professional utensils are in his possession

24b---------------------------------------24b

8) [line 2] KADAR - a pottery maker
9) [line 6] SHE'YAD HA'KOL MEMASHMESHES BAHEN - everyone touches and feels them (to see whether or not they should buy them)

10) [line 11] CHIFUFEI RESHUS HA'RABIM - "rubbing pegs," pegs and large stones stuck into the ground as a barrier so that people and wagons will not rub against the walls at the side of Reshus ha'Rabim

11) [line 13] B'MA'ALIN MI'TERUMAH L'YUCHASIN KAMIFLEGI - they argue whether or not we establish a person [with unknown lineage] as a Kohen based upon the fact that people apportion Terumah to him

12) [line 35] "UMI'BENEI... HA'MISYACHASIM" - "And of the sons of the Kohanim were the sons of Chavayah.... They searched for their documents of lineage but they were not found, and they were banished from the Kehunah. Hatirshasa (Nechemyah) said to them that they may not eat from Kodshim until a Kohen arises to the Urim v'Tumim (to find out if they are genuine Kohanim)" (Ezra 2:61-63)

13) [line 45] D'FARSEI YADAIHU - lit. they spread their hands; i.e. they say Birkas Kohanim

14) [line 46] D'RI'A CHEZKAIHU- there is reason to question their Chazakah
