REVIEW QUESTIONS ON GEMARA AND RASHI
prepared by Rabbi Eliezer Chrysler

Eruvin 48
1)
(a) Rebbi Chiya quoted a Beraisa which amused Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Chanina.
What did the Beraisa say?
(b) Why could his amusement not be due to ...
1. ... the fact that his ruling followed the opinion of Rebbi Yochanan ben
Nuri, whilst he, Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Chanina, held like the Rabbanan?
2. ... the Beraisa, which gives the water of a flowing river or of a
fountain the Techum of whoever collects it?
3. ... the fact that Rebbi Chiya required a metal wall?
(c) So why *did* Rebbi Yossi b'Rebbi Chanina laugh?
2)
(a) What is the difference between the Chachamim in our Mishnah, who say
that someone who slept during Bein Hashemashos only has four Amos, and
Rebbi Yehudah, who says 'le'Eizeh Ru'ach she'Yirtzeh Yelech'? Who is the
'Chachamim'?
(b) How far is he permitted to carry, according to the Chachamim?
(c) We derive the concept of four Amos from the Pasuk in Beshalach "Shevu
Ish Tachtav" - 'ke'Tachtav'. Rebbi Meir explains this to mean three Amos
for one's height, plus an extra Amah to stretch one's arms. What does it
mean, according to Rebbi Yehudah?
(d) What is the difference between the two explanations?
3)
(a) What are the two possible ways of explaining the minimum of Techum
Shabos?
(b) What is the problem with the first explanation vis-a-vis a giant like
Og Melech ha'Bashan?
(c) If everyone's four Amos consist of their own arm-length, then why does
the Mishnah in Kelim not include this in the list of 'ha'Kol Le'fi Mah
she'Hu Adam'?
4)
(a) In our Mishnah, Rebbi Shimon compares the case of the three men, where
the middle man's Techum partially overlaps the Techumin of the outer ones,
to three courtyards, where the outer two open out to the Reshus ha'Rabim,
and which made an Eruv with the courtyard in the middle, but not with each
other. What is Rebbi Shimon saying with this?
(b) What did the Chachamim answer him?
(c) Considering that the two outer courtyards combined to make an Eruv
with the middle one, why does this not help to make the three Chatzeros
into one, even vis-a-vis the residents of the two outer courtyards
carrying in each other's courtyard (according to Rav Yehudah)?
(d) How does Rav Sheshes establish the Mishnah even when they placed the
Eruv in the middle courtyard?

5)
Are we forced to say that Rav Sheshes hold like Beis Shamai, who holds
that if five people gave their bread for their Eruv and placed it in two
vessels, the Eruv is valid; or can he also follow the opinion of Beis
Hillel?
6)
(a) What problem does Rav Acha B'rei de'Rav Ivya have with Rav Yehudah,
who establishes that the two outer courtyards are forbidden to carry in
each other's domain, when the middle courtyard placed one Eruv in each of
the outer courtyards?
(b) How does Rav Ashi solve this problem?
(c) What problem does Rav Acha B'rei de'Rav Ivya have with Rav Sheshes,
who establishes the case when they placed the two Eruvin in two different
rooms in the middle courtyard - from the case of 'five who live together
in one courtyard, and one forgot to participate in the Eruv'?
(d) How does Rav Ashi solve this problem, too?
7)
The above is the opinion of Rebbi Shimon. What do the Rabbanan hold when
the two outer courtyards made an Eruv with the middle one (irrespective of
where the Eruv was placed), and why is that - according to Rav?
8)
(a) What does Shmuel hold in this regard - according to Rebbi Shimon?
(b) In which case will everyone agree that the residents of all three
courtyards are permitted to carry anywhere in the entire area?
(c) According to Shmuel, what is the meaning of 'Hi Muteres Imahen' in the
words of Rebbi Shimon in our Mishnah?
(d) Since Shmuel is merely switching Rebbi Shimon for the Rabbanan, why
does he say '*Af* Zu Divrei Rebbi Shimon' (and not just 'Zu Divrei Rebbi
Shimon')?
9)
How does the Beraisa, which (besides giving the opinion of the Chachamim,
also) describes how the two outer courtyards are permitted to carry to and
from the middle one, prove Shmuel's opinion?
