Eruvin 96

ERUVIN 96 - sponsored by Eitan Fish, a student of Rabbi Kornfeld presently living in Monsey

1) [line 37] MICHAL BAS KUSHI - Michal, the daughter of Shaul ha'Melech, who is called Kush in Tehilim 7:1. The Gemara explains that just as a black man (Kushi) stands out clearly because of the color of his skin, so too did Shaul stand out by virtue of his rare righteousness (Moed Katan 16b)

2) [line 41] MITZVAS ASEH SHE'LO HA'ZEMAN GERAMA HI - it is a positive commandment that does not have a time constraint, therefore women are obligated to perform it

96b---------------------------------------96b

3) [line 1] NASHIM SOMCHOS RESHUS
Semichah refers to the Mitzvah for a person to press his hands with all his might on the head of his sacrifice before it is slaughtered, as described in Vayikra 1:4.

4a) [line 23] LESHONOS - strips of wool
b) [line 24] CHUTIN - threads
5) [line 25] A'DA'ATA D'GELIMA TZAV'INHU - he dyed them in order to make a cloak (and they are Pasul to use as Tzitzis since Tzitzis must be dyed li'Shmah -- for the sake of Tzitzis)

6) [line 26] SHEZURIM - twisted
7) [line 27] A'DA'ATA D'SIFSA D'GELIMA AIFINHU - he twisted them with the intention of making the border of a cloak [(O.F. cimols) border of a garment; (O.F. orels) threads forming the edge of a garment]

8) [line 28] MUFSAKIN - cut [strings]
9) [line 29] KAMI'A - amulet, charm
*10*) [line 30] BA'MEH DEVARIM AMURIM? B'YESHANOS - that is, if it is clear from the markings on the straps that they were once tied into the type of knot that is found in Tefilin, then we are certain that these are real Tefilin and not just a Kemei'a. No person would trouble himself so much to not only make a Kemei'a that looks like Tefilin, but to also tie its straps like those of Tefilin. (TOSFOS DH v'Chi, RASHI 95a DH b'Yeshanos)

11) [line 32] KEIFEI TALA LAH? - did he hang earrings and nose-rings (alt. gems) on it?; i.e. even though Ahavah brei d'Rebbi Zeira taught the Beraisa that states explicitly that a person does not make the effort to dye cut strings except for the Mitzvah of Tzitzis, it does not help explain the teaching of Rebbi Elazar - that cut strings that are found are Kosher for Tzitzis. Since our Mishnah implies that even if we assume that a person does not make any effort, we are still stringent with regard to the Halachic ruling, cut strings should also be Pesulin.
