Eruvin 86

ERUVIN 86 - was generously dedicated by an anonymous donor in Los Angeles in honor of his son, Sam, who lives and teaches in Yerushalayim.

1) [line 5] AL TESHAGREHU - do not send him
2) [line 7] "YESHEV OLAM ... CHESED VE'EMES MAN YINTZERUHU" - "May he be enthroned before HaSh-m forever; appoint lovingkindness and truth to preserve him." (Tehilim 61:8) - The Gemara interprets this verse homiletically to mean, "The world will be settled (i.e. will prosper) and will be protected when there are rich people who provide food and other necessities for the poor."

3) [line 10] YASED SHEL MACHAREISHAH - (O.F. cheville) the spike of a plow (used for making furrows)

4) [line 14] ASHASHIS - a lump of metal
5) [line 22] HISI'A MI'LIBO - he decided irrevocably not to live in his house for that Shabbos

6a) [line 23] NAVACH BACH KALBA, UL - even though a male dog barks at you, go in
b) [line 24] NAVACH BACH GURYESA, PUK - if a young female dog barks at you, go out

7) [line 28] MI'TOCH OGNO - within its embankment (i.e. the Mechitzah measures ten Tefachim from the top of the well down but does not necessarily touch the water)

8) [line 31] L'MATAH MAMASH - at the bottom of the airspace of the well, i.e. just above the water

9) [line 32] L'MA'ALAH MAMASH - at the top of the airspace of the well, i.e. just under the brim

10) [line 36] D'ARIVEI MAYA - the water from the two halves of the well mingle below the Mechitzah

11) [line 40] ROSHAN SHEL KANIM - the tips of the reeds of the Mechitzah

*12*) [line 46] KORAH ARBA'AH MATERES B'CHURVAH - if a 4 Tefach wide Korah is suspended in a Churvah, it is permitted to carry under it as though in a Reshus ha'Yachid (due to the rule of Pi Tikrah Yored v'Sosem, see next entry)

13) [line 46] KORAH ARBA'AH MATERES B'CHURVAH (PI TIKRAH YORED V'SOSEM)
(a) The Torah requires Mechitzos (partitions) for various Halachos (e.g. for Reshus ha'Yachid of Shabbos and for Sukah). A Mechitzah must be ten Tefachim high and enclose an area of four by four Tefachim. (See Insights to the Daf, here.)
(b) When an area is covered by a roof, a Halachah l'Moshe mi'Sinai states that the edge of the beams of the roof "descends and encloses" (Pi Tikrah Yored v'Sosem), even though that side is completely open and has no physical partition. We may consider the area enclosed for Halachic purposes (see Insights to Eruvin 25:2). Amora'im argue as to whether Pi Tikrah can be used to enclose all four sides or only to enclose three sides when one Mechitzah already exists (according to RASHI; see Insights ibid.).
(c) In certain instances, Pi Tikrah cannot be applied. (1) Pi Tikrah is not applied to a roof that is sloped. (2) According to TOSFOS (Eruvin 86b DH Gezuztera), citing RASHI (Sukah 18b), it is not applied unless the roof beam is at least one Tefach thick. (3) According to TOSFOS (Eruvin 86b ibid.), it does not apply when the thickness of the roof beam is notched and not flat (see Insights to Eruvin 86b).

86b---------------------------------------86b

14) [line 2] U'MAISI - and brings up water from the other side (past the partition)
15) [line 12] HA'MESHALSHEL DEFANOS: MIL'MA'ALAH LA'MATAH - [(O.F. trecier) to weave, to plait] one who weaves curtains as the walls of a Sukah, from the top downward

16) [line 30] EIN OSIN OHEL ARA'I B'SHABBOS
(a) It is prohibited mid'Oraisa to build on Shabbos (Mishnah Shabbos 73a). The Melachah of Boneh (building) includes building structures that are attached to the ground and adding to structures that are attached to the ground.
(b) The Tana'im argue as to whether it is permitted on Shabbos to attach a *temporary* addition to a structure. Building a temporary structure in the first place, however, is prohibited according to all opinions.
(c) The Rishonim disagree as to whether this prohibition applies only to horizontal additions, such as placing a cover over a skylight, or also to vertical additions, such as placing a shutter in a window (see Insights).
