Chulin 49

CHULIN 47-50 - sponsored by Dr. Lindsay A. Rosenwald of Lawrence NY, in honor of his father, David ben Aharon ha'Levy Rosenwald of blessed memory.

1)

(a) We will learn later that if a needle is found in the folds of the Beis ha'Kosos (the paunch), 'mi'Tzad Echad Kasher'.
Why is that?

(b) What will be the Din if the needle pierced both walls?

(c) In the first case, what do we try to extrapolate from the fact that no distinction is drawn between the direction the needle is facing (like Rav Ashi did regarding a needle in the liver)?

(d) How do we reconcile this case with Rav Ashi?

2)
(a) If a needle is found in the Simpon of an animal's liver, Huna Mar b'rei de'Rav Idi declares it Tereifah.
Why is that?

(b) Rav Ada bar Minyumi declares it Kasher.
Why?

(c) When the case was sent before Ravina, he sided with Rav Ada bar Minyumi. What did he authorize the owner to do (with regard to Mar b'rei de'Rav Idi's ruling?

3)
(a) Rav Ashi quoted Rav Kahana as saying that a date-pit that is found in an animal's gall-bladder must have entered via the Simpon of the Kaved. How did he know that it did not puncture the Veshet to get there (in which case the animal would be Tereifah)?

(b) How will we explain this in a case where the date pit is simply too large to pass through the Simpon ha'Kaved?

(c) What did Rav Ashi say about an olive-pit?

4)
(a) Why, according to Rebbi Yochanan, is the lung called 'Re'ah'?

(b) What are the two possible interpretations of his statement?

(c) If according to Rav Huna bar Yehudah, a goose costs one Zuz, how much does one pay for its lung?

(d) What does that prove?

5)
(a) Rav Acha bar Nasan assumes that a hole that is found in the area of a lung that has been handled by the Shochet was in fact made by the Shochet. This might refer to the chest cavity, which is extremely compact (and where he is likely to have made the hole with his nails).
To what else might it refer?

(b) What does Mar Zutra b'rei de'Rav Mari say?

(c) We rule 'Talinan', and we cite the statement of Rav Shmuel b'rei de'Rebbi Avahu's father, who was one of Rafram main interpreters, to the same effect.
What was Rav Zutra b'rei de'Rav Mari reaction when he heard of the latter's statement?

(d) Rav Mesharshaya supported the opinion of his grandfather, Rav Acha bar Nasan (Talinan), based on 'Ze'ev'. What did he mean by that?

6)
(a) Rav Yosef bar Dusta'i and the Rabbanan argue over worms that emerge from the lung.
What exactly is the Machlokes?

(b) What is the Halachah?

7)
(a) Our Mishnah cited Rebbi Shimon, who declares a hole in the lung Kasher until it reaches the area of the Simponos.
How does Rabah bar Tachlifa Amar Rebbi Yirmiyah bar Aba qualify this statement?

(b) What did Rav Nachman retort when Rav Acha bar Aba stated that Rebbi M'loch Amar Rebbi Yehoshua ben Levi rules like Rebbi Shimon? What did he mean by 'Rebbi M'loch Arva'a'?

(c) What did Rebbi Zeira testify concerning his visit to Rebbi M'loch, together with Rebbi Chiya bar Aba and Rav Asi, when, upon his arrival in Eretz Yisrael, Rav Bibi quoted him Rebbi M'loch as having said 'Halachah ke'Rebbi Shimon'?

(d) What did Rebbi Zeira reply, when Rebbi Bibi asked him what his own (when Zeira's) tradition was? How did he quote Rav Yitzchak bar Ami Amar Rebbi M'loch?

(e) What is the Halachah?

8)
(a) Rebbi Yitzchak bar Nachmeni Amar Rebbi Oshaya informs us that the Kohanim had the Minhag to eat the Cheilev on the Keivah, basing themselves on Rebbi Yishmael in the name of his fathers.
Why does he mention specifically the Kohanim?

(b) What Si'man did he give to remind us that the lenient opinion is that of Rebbi Yishmael?

(c) Why do we need to find a second ruling to fit this description of Rebbi Yishmael?

(d) Following the Pasuk in Beha'aloscha "Ko Sevarchu es B'nei Yisrael ... ", how does Rebbi Yishmael interpret "va'Ani Avorcheim"?

9)
(a) How does Rebbi Akiva explain the previous Pasuk?

(b) From where does Rebbi Akiva then learn that the Kohanim are blessed too?

(c) In what way does Rebbi Yitzchak bar Nachmeni consider Rebbi Yishmael's opinion as being advantageous to the Kohanim?

Answers to questions

10)

(a) 'Rebbi Yishmael in the name of his fathers' (cited by Rebbi Yitzchak bar Nachmeini) is based on a Beraisa, where from the Pasuk in Vayikra "es ha'Cheilev Asher al Ha'Kerev" he includes the Cheilev on the Dakin.
What does that entail?

(b) What does Rebbi Akiva say? Over what are they arguing?

(c) We ask from another Beraisa, where Rebbi Yishmael learns from the same Pasuk 'K'rum ve'Niklaf'.
What does that include?

(d) Rebbi Akiva says 'K'rum ve'Niklaf ve'Tosav'.
What does 'Tosav' mean?

11)
(a) What problem are we now faced with?

(b) How does Ravin in the name of Rebbi Yochanan resolve the problem? Which Beraisa does he amend?

(c) On what grounds does he amend specifically the first Beraisa and not the second?

(d) Then how does Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak justify Rebbi Yitzchak bar Nachmeini's establishing the Minhag of the Kohanim like Rebbi Yishmael (who, we just concluded, does not hold like that)?

12)
(a) What distinction does Rav draw between Shuman (Kasher Cheilev) and Cheilev, regarding the Din of blocking a hole?

(b) What does Rav Sheishes say?

(c) What are the two sides to Rebbi Zeira's She'eilah (which follows the opinion of Rav), regarding whether the Cheilev of a Chayah blocks a hole or not?

(d) What does Abaye say to that?

13)
(a) Besides the fact that Rav Sheishes permits a hole that is blocked by Cheilev, what additional reason did Rava give to permit such an animal?

(b) What is the source for this reason?

(c) On what grounds does Rav Papa reject Rava's first ruling?

(d) Why did Menimin Kanduka appear before Rava with a jar of honey? What does 'Kanduka' mean?

14)
(a) Besides the reason that the Torah takes pity on the money of a Yisrael, Rava permits honey that has been left uncovered, on the basis of a Mishnah in Terumos.
Which three uncovered liquids does the Tana forbid for fear that a snake drank from them, leaving some of its poison behind? What does that prove?

(b) On what grounds does Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak reject this reason?

(c) The Tana Kama in a Beraisa lists five liquids that are not subject to snake poison. Three of them are fish-juice, vinegar and olive oil.
What are the other two?

(d) How do the Rabbanan counter Rebbi Shimon's argument that he actually witnessed a snake drinking fish-juice in Tzidon?

15)
(a) Rava asked Rav Nachman to concede that he was right regarding brine, based on what Rav Papa, Rav Huna b'rei de'Rav Yehoshua and the Rabbanan used to do.
What was that?

(b) What makes brine different than other liquids in this regard?

(c) And why did he also ask him to concede regarding honey?

16)
(a) Rav Nachman rules that Cheilev which is shaped like a hat does not block a hole. According to some, this refers to Chiti de'Karkesha.
What is 'Chiti de'Karkesha'?

(b) Why is it called 'Chiti'?

(c) How do others interpret it?

17)
(a) Rava heard from Rav Nachman two things 'Chimtza u'bar Chimtza, Chad Sasim, ve'Chad Lo Sasim', but he could not recall which was which. Whereabouts are both of these situated?

(b) Rav Huna bar Chin'na and Rav Huna b'rei de'Rav Nachman explained which was which. What does Rav Tavos mean when he explains 'Yafeh Ko'ah ha'Ben mi'Ko'ach ha'Av' (in this context)?

(c) What does the phrase mean in its own context (in Shevu'os)?
