Avodah Zarah 60
1)
(a) Rav Yeimar connects Rav Papa's ruling with a Mishnah in T'vul-Yom (as we
just explained). What does the Tana Kama there say about a barrel containing
Terumah wine in which a hole appeared and a T'vul-Yom touched the wine by
the hole?
(b) Why is that?
(c) Why, according to Rebbi Yehudah, is all the wine Tamei in the case where
the hole is ...
- ... on top?
- ... at the bottom?
(d) Where the hole is at the side however, all the wine that is beyond the
thickness of the hole is Tahor (see Tosfos Yom-Tov in T'vul-Yom). Why does
the wine that the T'vul-Yom touched not render the rest of the wine Tamei
(see Tosfos DH 'mi'Tzidehah')?
2)
(a) What does Rav Papa say about a case where ...
- ... a Nochri is pouring wine from a barrel into a jug that a Yisrael is holding? Why is that?
- ... a Yisrael is pouring wine from a barrel into a jug that a Nochri is holding?
(b) If, in the latter case, the Nochri tips the barrel, the wine is
forbidden, either to drink, or even be'Hana'ah, depending on the case.
What would be the case and the suspicion that would forbid ...
- ... the wine even be'Hana'ah?
- ... drinking it, but not benefiting from it?
3)
(a) Rav Papa discusses the difference between a Nochri who is carrying a
Zika (a flask) and a Kuva (a barrel), and who is being followed by a
Yisrael. What is the technical difference between the way one transports a
Zika and the way one transports a Kuva?
(b) On what grounds does Rav Papa permit benefiting from the wine in a full
Zika, but forbid it when it is not full?
(c) Why, on the other hand, does he ...
- ... forbid the wine in a full Kuva?
- ... permit the wine in a Kuva that is not full? Why are we not afraid that he might shake it?
(d) On what grounds does Rav Ashi disagree with Rav Papa's ruling regarding
a half-full Zika (see Tosfos DH 'Zika')?
4)
(a) Rav Papi permits drinking the wine that a Nochri pressed in a Ma'atzra
Zaira. Rav Ashi forbids it. What sort of wine-press is 'Ma'atzra Zaira'?
(b) According to the first Lashon, they argue over Ko'ach Kocho. What is
'Ko'ach Kocho' in a wine-press?
(c) What will they hold in a case of Kocho? What is 'Kocho' in a wine-press?
(d) According to the second Lashon, when do Rav Papi and Rav Ashi argue and
when do they agree?
(e) What did Rebbi Ya'akov from Nahar Pakud rule in a case of Ko'ach Kocho?

5)
(a) What happened when a barrel containing wine split length-wise?
(b) What did Rafram bar Papa (or Rav Huna b'rei de'Rav Yehoshua) rule there?
Why was that?
(c) Why would he have even permitted drinking the wine if the barrel had
split width-wise?
6)
(a) When they discovered a Nochri in the wine-press which did not contain
any wine, Rav Ashi ruled that, assuming that the vessels were wet from the
wine that was beginning to form, they required rinsing and drying. What
does drying entail?
(b) What would they require if they were still dry?
7)
(a) If one discovered a Nochri standing beside a wine-pit, what criterion
does our Mishnah give that will determine whether the wine is permitted or
not?
(b) What does the Tana Kama of our Mishnah quote the Chachamim as saying
about a case where the Nochri fell into a wine-pit and came up, measured the
depth of the wine or flicked out a hornet with his cane, or if he touched
the wine whilst it was bubbling?
(c) What does Rebbi Shimon say?
(d) Finally, what does our Tana rule about a case where a Nochri takes an
empty barrel of wine in his anger and throws it into the wine-pit?
8)
(a) How does Shmuel qualify the Din in our Mishnah 'Im Yesh Lo Milveh Alav,
Asur'? How might the owner owe the Nochri whom he discovered standing in his
wine-press, money, yet the wine is permitted?
(b) And we support Shmuel's ruling with with the next Mishnah. What does
the Tana mean there when he talks about 'ha'Metaher Yeino shel
Oved-Kochavim'?
(c) The Tana speaks when he then leaves the wine in the Nochri's Reshus.
When does the Yisrael pay the Nochri for the wine?
9)
(a) Under what circumstances is that permitted (because we are not afraid
that the Nochri touched it)? What happened once in Beis Sha'an?
(b) So how have we proved our point from there?
10)
(a) We learned in our Mishnah that if a Nochri falls into a wine-pit and
comes up, the wine may be sold. How does Rav Papa interpret 'and comes up'?
Why does he not interpret it literally?
(b) 'Kol Eilu Hayah Ma'aseh ve'Amru Yimacher. ve'Rebbi Shimon Matir'. On
what grounds did Rav Ada bar Ahavah bless Rebbi Shimon? Why was he impressed
with his ruling?
(c) Various Amora'im rule like Rebbi Shimon. What is the Sugya's final
ruling?
11)
(a) What principle does Rav Ashi teach us that compares the Din of Yayin
Nesech to that of the Tum'ah of a Zav?
(b) Why can he not possibly mean to include the Din of 'Heset' (moving the
wine) in his ruling?
(c) Then what *is* he coming to teach us? In which case does a Zav not
render someone or something Tamei, and what is then the Din by wine in the
same circumstances?
12)
(a) Rav Huna (or Ravina) queries Rav Ashi from our Mishnah. What can we
infer from the Seifa 'Natal es ha'Chavis ve'Zarkah ba'Chamaso le'Bor ...
ve'Hichshiru'?
(b) What is the reason for the distinction? Why is the Tana lenient in the
case of 'Zarkah ba'Chamaso'?
(c) How will Rav Ashi establish this, to reconcile it with his ruling?
