1)
(a) What She'eilah do we ask in connection with our Mishnah 'Sheloshah Yamim
Lifnei Eidehen'? What ambiguity exists in the meaning of this phrase?
(b) How do we attempt to resolve the She'eilah, from Rebbi Yishmael in a
Beraisa, who says 'Sheloshah Lifneihem u'Sheloshah le'Achareihem'?
(c) In refuting the proof, we establish 'Sheloshah Lifneihem' as being
inclusive. How will we then explain 'Sheloshah le'Achareihem'?
2)
(a) Based on the fact that Sunday is considered a Christian festival, what
does Rav Tachlifa bar Avdimi Amar Shmuel say, according to Rebbi Yishmael?
(b) What problem does Shmuel's statement present on the above?
(c) How do we get round the problem?
3)
(a) The next Mishnah will discuss Kalanda, Satrunya and Kartesim. What do
these three have in common?
(b) Rav Chanin bar Rava explains that Kalanda takes place eight days after
the Tekufah (the beginning of the new season). Which season?
(c) On what date does Satrunya take place?
(d) Why do we quote the Pasuk in Tehilim "Achor va'Kedem Tzartani"?
4)
(a) How do we ...
- ... try to prove from here that 'Sheloshah Yamim' must be exclusive (minus the festival itself)?
- ... reject this proof? How would we understand our Mishnah, even if 'Sheloshah Yamim' would included the festival?
(b) What does Rav Ashi finally extrapolate from the Lashon 'Lifnei Eidehen
shel Akum Sheloshah Yamim'? What else might the Tana have said?
(c) And what ought he to have said had he meant merely to preclude the three
days after the festival?
5)
(a) We ask whether the Isur is perhaps based on 'Harvachah'. What does
that mean?
(b) What would the Isur alternatively be?
(c) What are the ramifications of the She'eilah?
6)
(a) What does the Beraisa say about handing a Nazir a glass of wine or a
piece of Eiver min ha'Chai to a Nochri?
(b) Why does this appear to clash with what we just said?
(c) How do we reconcile the two statements?
(d) How does the Lashon of the Beraisa bear this out?
Answers to questions
6b---------------------------------------6b
7)
(a) Rebbi Yochanan forbids anyone who did do business with a Nochri before
the festival to derive any benefit from the proceeds. What does Resh
Lakish say?
(b) How does Resh Lakish reconcile his opinion with the Beraisa 'Eidehen
shel Ovdei Kochavim, Nasa ve'Nasan Asur'?
(c) In the second Lashon, how does Rebbi Yochanan counter Resh Lakish's
inference 'Eidehen In, Lifnei Eidehen, Lo'?
8)
(a) The Beraisa qualifies the prohibition of 'Lifnei Eidehen'. Which kinds
of objects does the Tana preclude from the prohibition? Why is that?
(b) What does the Tana say about someone who transgressed the prohibition,
and did business with a Nochri within three days of the festival?
(c) Rav Z'vid quoting a Beraisa by Rebbi Oshaya forbids the purchase of
objects that will not last until the festival, from a Nochri. Why is that?
9)
(a) What is a Dinra Keysarna'ah?
(b) What quandary faced Rebbi Yehudah Nesi'ah when a Miyn sent him such a
coin on the day of his festival? Why did he not simply refuse to accept it?
(c) Initially, he declined to accept the advice of Resh Lakish to throw it
into a deep pit in the Miyn's presence. Why was that?
(d) What did Resh Lakish really mean?
10)
(a) Our Mishnah includes borrowing from a Nochri in the prohibition (even
though he appears to gain nothing). How does Abaye explain this?
(b) According to Rava, however, the prohibition of borrowing is as intrinsic
as that of lending. Why is that?
(c) In similar vein, Abaye explains the prohibition of claiming payment of a
loan from a Nochri as a decree on account of lending him money. What does
Rava say?
11)
Having taught us the prohibition of ...
- ... doing business with a Nochri, why does the Tana then need to add that of borrowing vessels from him?
- ... borrowing vessels from him, why does he need to add that of borrowing money.
- ... borrowing money from him, why does he need to add that of claiming a debt?
12)
(a) Rebbi Yehudah in our Mishnah permits claiming a debt from a Nochri
within the three days prior to his festival. What reason to we initially
ascribe to Rebbi Yehudah's ruling?
(b) What does Rebbi Yehudah in a Beraisa say about a woman smearing a lime
pack on her face on Yom-Tov ...
- ... if it is not due to be removed until the middle of Yom-Tov? Why is that?
- ... if the lime can be removed on the first day of Yom-Tov?
(c) How does Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak reconcile this ruling with Rebbi
Yehudah's previous ruling, where he did not contend with the fact that the
Nochri will benefit later?
(d) According to Ravina, repayment of a loan is different. Why is that?
13)
(a) Our Mishnah does not go like Rebbi Yehoshua ben Korchah. What
distinction does Rebbi Yehoshua ben Korchah draw between a documented loan
and an oral one?
(b) Like whom did Rebbi Huna rule?
(c) Rebbi Aba was sitting in front of Rav Huna when he issued that ruling.
Who was sitting behind Rebbi Aba at the time?
